help learning the format

I'm new on the link and am trying to figure out how to use this forum. Like what do all these icons mean?(the burning briefcase) If I post something(like this) how do I quickly find it a month from now? What if someone responds a month from now-will I be alerted? I looked on the "Test" forum but couldn't really figure out what people were doing. I didn't find a set of directions anywhere. Thanks

Most of it really comes from using the site, becoming familiar with all its in and outs.
