View Full Version : Painting Brake Caliper - Need Color Suggestion for Daytona Gray A5 S- Line

Audi-6ix

Planning on painting my calipers and wanted some suggestions for what color I should go with. I wanted to try something different so I was thinking maybe burnt orange? How do you guys think it will look? Also considered white but I feel like it'll always be full of brake dust.

I was also looking at S-Line caliper decals. Does anyone know what size would fit on the rear calipers?

All suggestions are welcome - please don't tell me to just keep them factory since they are stock brakes.

Audi Vegas Yellow. This is what I have for my BBK.
But to be honest, the stock cast sliding calipers won't turn out to be good looking after painting unless you completely sand the surface of the calipers and properly paint them with high temp primer, base coat, and high temp clear coat.

Not really. G2 caliper paint kit. Holds up well and looks perfect. No sanding, priming or clear coating required.

Do you have decals on the rear calipers as well? If so, do you know what size they are?

My local detailer recently has an A5 with painted red calipers. They look really good when clean but I wonder if the red will still pop after they get caked in brake dust.

Personally, I want to paint my calipers but don't want to go the usual red or black.. I'm thinking about doing BMW estoril blue for some reason. I want something unique. Any recommendations?

Don't know how they will get "caked" in brake dust. I clean mine when I wash the car.

On the same boat as you. Red doesn't look bad but it's too played out I want something different without looking like a ricer

On my r8 it was professionally painted by a shop using the color from porsche " mint green". Can get u the paint code if needed. G1 caliper paint has a kit for this

On my a5 i used duplicolor engine paint " torque and teal". I DIY with that one.

Hammerite silver + logo + clear coat. I have done all my projectcars calipers with hammerite and thats one good and heavyduty paint. If you do it right and add clear coat, it looks really smooth.

IMHO if you're rocking the stock brakes then paint them something simple and muted. Keep the bright and bold for calipers that deserve to be shown.

Mops@Nemesis

I'd go copper or bronze. No need to call too much focus to the tiny OE calipers. Copper or bronze would be unique, but not too loud.

And red still pops hard even when bad bad dirty. And obviously, painted calipers should be washed every time the wheels are washed.

I have Meteor Gray, not Daytona Gray, but it's sorta close. I used the G2 caliper paint (and have on previous cars). The stuff holds up great, completely covers the black and washes dust off easily. The color I used is called Custom Windveil Blue (a Ford color). It was about $55.

Dupli-Color Caliper Paint Kit in Silver (no sanding just a good cleaning). With darker gray Oracal 970 vinyl background and custom size "S" stickers from ebay. You can have the sticker made in any size and color combination you want, just email the vendor. I have all of them for over two years now and still look like the first day. Not even the vinyl have had any problems.

Decals on the calipers? If so, yes they do make an S'line. The S5 painted logo was fading on the OEM metal plate so I painted it and put a high temp vinyl decal I ordered off eBay on there. $5 or so. Came from Serbia though so it took about 3 weeks to arrive. The guy makes awesome decals. Pretty easy to do. I applied clear coat engine enamel afterwards to keep it shiny and fresh for years. Link below.

Also including a full car shot pic so you can see how subtle, yet nice the blue/gray combo looks. Sorry about the quick parking lot photos I posted earlier; I should have put more effort into it for you. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170215/1e2f2b7d440b68a57b9354579ad38010.jpg

Exactly what I'm going to do and using the G2 paint kit.

Quick question though, are you guys taking the caliper bracket and caliper off to paint it or masking as much as you can?

I just purchased the S5 caliper brackets and rotors and was planning to paint the them with the G2 paint. I wasn't sure if I should paint the caliper brackets first a few days before doing the brake job and painting the caliper piston as I'm doing the brake job or just mask everything off after doing the brake job.

Thanks.

I did the same upgrade. I'd recommend painting the brackets first. Take note on the existing carrier of what surfaces need to be painted as you don't need to paint the entire bracket.

The calipers are easiest to do with the pads out. You don't have to disconnect the brake line, just have a good support for the caliper and it should be easy to paint. Save some paint for touch-ups after your put everything back together. The silver pad retaining spring can be tricky to reinstall without scratching your fresh paint job.

What I did with the G2 kit is mix half of the paint with half of the activator, replace the front rotors, painted the brackets and caliper, reinstalled. Then mix the rest and do the rears and any touch-ups. This saves you from having to rush the job as the paint has a set time where it can be applied before curing.

Bootlid is from RS5 yes, but Rear brakediscs from Audi RS6 C6/ main calipers from Porche Cayanne Turbo S/ handbrake calipers are electrical and from RS6 C6 (Without hydro).
Car will be total RS5 conversion. Those images are abit old when it was S5 looking car. At the moment there will be new bodykit, rims, suspension, exhaust and other bs.

I painted the whole caliper Windveil Blue and the little metal plate I painted Iron Gray (with VHT Flameproof spray paint), put the S5 decal on after it was dry then clear coated. The little metal plate pops right off. Be careful to pull both sides sort of evenly or you can break it in half. This I know from experience.

I did this same thing with my RS4 years ago. Same brand paint, same vinyl decals. I had the car from 19k all the way to 118k miles before I sold it. The calipers looked great the entire time. Quality paint.

I took a couple pic of the plate I broke (you can see I tried several colors until in found the right one) to help show you what you are prying off. It's held in with little expanders on the two posts. Simple thing really. Wow! seems like so easy to break! may just paint the caliper & the plate in same color then no need to remove the plate then

Corners4kids

It's not that easy to break. I broke this one by prying too much on just one side. I had pulled that beyond 1/2" on the side. Now I use a flat head screwdriver to start the prying and hen my hands to gently pull each side bit by bit. Pretty easy.

I do recommend pulling and painting the plate in a contrasting color to help make the 'S' pop on your decal. Plus you can clear coat the decal and plate that way so it lasts a long time. No need to clear coat G2 paint.

Will try to pry it out on weekend. So do you brush paint or spray paint the G2? Do you have a closer look pic on the caliper? thanks

Since everyone's showing off the colored brakes, here's red calipers on daytona grey:

Nice setup Shonesb. Baller status on the brakes.

The G2 paint comes with one brush, caliper cleaner and the paint/epoxy mix. I recommend getting a few more brushes as they get crusty in about 30 minutes and will make lines in the paint.

Post a pic when you finish please.

Edited to attach better pics (also took a pic of the paint I used from the logo plate, available at any auto store):

I have Daytona as well and went with what I call Satin Yellow so it doesn't stand out too much with all black Sline vinyl up front only:

How do you guys think gold would look?

I will have to take some more as that was the only close up shot of the calipers I currently have, and gold if done right could look okay depends on your "theme" for your car but I lean more towards bronze or copper over gold (that's just me).
