This is going to be a living thread to chronicle my COLOR DIS & MMI3G retrofit projects.
I have borrowed heavily from Infiltrator and other posts on here. I have added some additional clarification when possible.
If you have any additions or suggestions let me know and I will update.

Generally you would want a 90*/right angle for behind dash and a straight through for the connections to the sharkfin or wherever else you're hooking it up.
They are "keyed" but if you really don't have a choice you can use "Z" for any of them.
Tons of great wiring and other information

Option Code Information:
Bang & Olufsen = 9VK
Audi Concert/Symphony System (Active sound, with amp in trunk) = 9VD [I think this is the lowest we got in the US]
Audi System (Passive sound, w/o amp in trunk, center speaker and subwoofer) = 8RX [I think this is only available ROW so don't worry about it]

Info:
My car was a 2010 Base so I had the monochrome red DIS. I decided to swap it out for a full color version. I happened upon a cluster on eBay that had the same mileage as mine. Otherwise you need to get the cluster reprogrammed.
FYI: I do not have ACC so my P/N may vary from yours.
Steps to swap out the Instrument Cluster (DIS) on the B8
http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/711222-DIY-A5-Instrument-Cluster-Face-and-Gauge-Retrofit-for-A4
1) Remove the MMI LCD Trim (held in by pressure clips)
2) Remove the Left Vent Trim (held in by pressure clips)
3) Pull your steering wheel all the way down to release tension on the center trim piece.
4) Remove the center trim piece (this has pressure clips and little tabs that click into the frame of the cluster)
5) Remove the 3x 8mm bolts. One at each top corner, one on the center bottom. (use a magnet for this one if you are nervous)
6) Pull out the cluster and manipulate it so that basically the gauges are facing up.
7) Pull out the little locking tab on the connector and remove.
8) Swap in your new cluster, attach cable, reinstall 3x 8mm bolts, replace center trim, replace vent trim, replace MMI trim.
9) Go to dealer to get Component Protection removed.
10) Enjoy that sweet full color goodness!
https://s18.postimg.io/5fvjncnnt/IMG_20160901_100934.jpg
Coming up next will be to install the "Navigation" stalks so I can cycle through the screens on the cluster. Stay tuned!

OK quick update, DIS/Nav Stalks install went without a hitch. I followed the great DIY at http://audienthusiasts.com/ProjectSteeringSwap.html
If you haven't already send DavidB8 a donation, he has provided so much valuable information on this platform.
Now I can successfully toggle through the various screens on my new Color DIS. I enabled Lap Timer, Oil Temp Gauge, Eco mode via VCDS.
Next Stop: Installing my MMI3G retrofit parts.

OK So I have run all cables, removed all of the old parts and installed all of the new MMI3G retrofit parts.
This little nugget of information was not in any of the existing tutorials but it is very important. When you try to remove the hood release lever you need to use a flat head to remove a little plastic clip. It is very simple once you know what to actually do.

System is operational.
GPS acquires satellites.
I enabled the secret menu.
Appointment is made to have component protection removed.
I just need to tidy up the wiring under the dash and I am still waiting for the MMI dash bracket to properly button everything up.
Now I just need to get the software updated.

OK so Saturday i disconnected the battery and re-installed all of the components. I took it this morning and they were able to finally remove CP and now the components are all working again.
Coding:
https://trick77.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/diagnose-300x177.jpg
Media ripping works (in hidden menu I changed setting to [4/4 Copy/Ripping Enabled]
Navigation works (and the directions show up in my new Full Color DIS Cluster!)
I have DSP and Subwoofer controls in MMI
AMI Works Completely
MP3 CD's work
DVD Playback with VIM works (Entered Code via VCDS Adapation)
Tuner Couldn't Change Stations:
Problem: After CP was removed all functions of the MMI3G worked except the tuner could not change FM Radio stations.
Solution: I updated the software to 1333 and now everything works perfectly.
TODO's
I need to update the NAR Database
I need to figure out my voice control microphone wiring solution.
In the meantime I got rid of the "Left/Right" Microphone codes by telling MMI in Hidden Menu that No Mics were installed instead of 2.

Regarding the Single DIN MMI Main Unit Dash Bracket P/N 8K0858969
As of 09/20/2016 There are 2 publically available units of this part that I could find.
there is one dealer in Massachusetts that has a single piece in stock. Their price is ~$168.00. If you'd like specific details PM me.
there is one seller on US ebay that has a single piece in stock. Their price is ~$154.00.

Does anyone have any experience with this "activation dongle"? http://vnsmedia.shoper.pl/en_GB/p/AMI-activator-dongle-for-Audi-MMI-3G-HDD-,-3G-PLUS-,-RMC/112
Is that doing any other coding in the 5F besides what we've already accomplished in the Hidden Menu? (AUX/no AMI BT/AMI) setting?
This dongle will not help you, you have wrong cable(audi MDI cable)! Correct cable for audi 3G AMI(audi music interface) retrofit is:

Brief Update: I received my AMI Cable from AliExpress and this looks very much like the real deal. I believe upon first inspection that this is actual NOS Audi Stock from 2011/2012.
I plan on installing this this weekend and reporting my results. If so this is the going to be a great buy for $60.

Have a link to the cable? So you broke the port C off of the quadlock so you could plug this new one in right? I think I might do this and finish my retrofit.
IHave2Turbos
10-05-2016, 12:30 PM
Link is in the master parts list at the top I edited the link to point to AliExpress.
Yes i was forced to basically cut out the "C" portion of the shitty kufatec quadlock behind the MMI Main unit because for some reason they decided to go with a fully molded connector instead of the factory audi connector. So you can't just clip in the AMI cable.
You could also de-pin the wires from the AMI cable and repin into the molded quadlock which I admit would be nicer but I thought about it and it would make removing the AMI really difficult if I ever needed to in the future so I chose the cutting approach.

Update: So much fail!!! after 2 trips to the dealer they have been unable to communicate with the Module 56 (Radio) to remove Component Protection. My system and basically car are useless in this state.
I have posted a HELP request in this thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/502060-New-3G-Plus-MMI-in-2010-Retrofit?p=11891040&viewfull=1#post11891040
Hopefully once I get this figured out I can update the content here to complete the story.
Not sure why, but my car didn't like it when I tried to put the 'navigation' stalks on. I didn't save the code, and I may try the swap again this weekend, but when I scanned it said I had a coding issue.
Everything worked on the wiper stalks, expect for the toggle switch and reset button, was odd.

UPDATE: Interesting issue that came up from this retrofit. The CAN Gateway that I got for this upgrade obviously came from a different (older) car. I recently had an issue where my MMI Battery gauge was stuck at 50% even though my alternator/voltage regulator/battery were fine. The problem was that the old gateway still had an old BEM coding in it, the battery was coded as a 2010 build date. I updated the BEM coding to match my actual battery and instantly the gauge went back to 100%. This is an odd little bug that came up as a result of this retrofit and just adding a note here for completeness. Re-coding the BEM should be part of the coding procedure for this upgrade.

UPDATE: Another tiny thing to add for a fully complete upgrade which I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else. When you take out your Concert/Symphony head unit the passenger side fuse box has a 20A fuse for the radio. When you install the MMI unit you should swap this fuse out for the 5A that the MMI needs. This will protect the MMI head unit from getting zapped. You can see on the passenger fuse box cover that the fuse rating is variable based on which Radio package you have. I believe this is the "right" way to complete this retrofit.

So I just learned the hard way that Audi doesn't give out part numbers. While this fact really doesn't surprise me in general (why make it easy to buy from others right?), it does surprise me that they won't tell me what's actually installed on my car, that's irritating. But after asking a noob question at the local dealership I may have answered my own question and don't need to pull my column apart to verify, but I'd love verification here:
Are the only differences between the two parts above, BA and BD, the reset button and selector switch on the end of the wiper stalk? If so, I'm good, I have those 2 functions. Would love for someone to verify that though!

I generally look at http://www.jimellisaudiparts.com/products/Audi/2010/A4/Sabreblack/5668009/8K0953502BD4PK.html
Based on that yes the difference is the BA (base) does not have the multi-function buttons and the (BD) does have the buttons.

Thanks for the DIY!!!! Quick question; is all the data, assuming it is not wiped out by this swap, stay intact i.e. Odometer, Data 1 and Data 2?
Any of the data from the DIS stays with the DIS.

Yes the mileage is stored in the cluster itself. You will need to find a replacement unit that is close to your original mileage or find someone with a flash writer to reprogram your new cluster to match your current mileage.
Hello,
I have Audi A4 B8 2011 y with red DIS, and a also want to update to color. I have found new inst. cluster with color display, but local service say this can't be done. I can't update to color DIS, and must have cluster with same id number. Can anyone help what i can to do ?

Your local service are idiots, buy a cluster and local dealer MUST remove component protection, if they dont know how, let them contact audi AG! If not, find some other dealer who will remove CP or person who can clone your CP!
They tell me, it is not the same ports, and other on the old and new instrument cluster. If a dealer remove component protection, what else i must do to make cluster a work ? What is with coding ? he says in instrument must write vehicle ID number and other ?

Make sure you buy correct color cluster for prefacelift B8:
km, acc or not, diesel or petrol etc...you need to correct mileage(hackers will do this), dealer will not do this on used cluster, or find one close to your current mileage!

Good luck!
One more question ? How to find instrument cluster number of my cluster, to find new one ? My Audi is 2011y, diesel, no acc ?

IHave2Turbos - thank you putting this extremely helpful guide together. I have been contemplating doing this for some time and now I feel much more confident with pricing, part #'s and instructions all laid out. Time to begin sourcing parts!

I was wondering if there's a way to find the id number of the instrument cluster without extraction from the car?

You can see nr with vcds, but you dont need your old cluster number to find new one, just use prcodes and use online catalogue or find cluster number in ebay de... Take 2010+ cluster!
I contacted an authorized audi store, and they told me I could remove a CP for about $ 35. When I embark on a new instrument cluster for myself, will I be able to start a car to go to them? And when they remove the protection, is it all? Why did others mention that a new instrument cluster should be coded, add additional data to it? In blocks 50 and 20?
Something like this ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLCa6VyZ8Fk
Done !! Al what you need is to remove CP from intrument cluster and if you want correct milage. No other coding needed. Replaced instrument cluster is from 2009y. I will tomoroow upload some pictures. Color DIS is awesome !!! My next retrofit will be MMI with NAVI update !!

not sure i understand? the harness kit includes everything you need. the price on their site includes taxes which we don’t pay in the US

also as you can see the prices have continued to trend downwards as more and more of these parts get old and flood ebay.

i’ll probably re-retrofit to mmi3g+ if i can scoop up controls and main unit on the cheap.

This cable, which I believe is right, mentions you also need part numbers 36735 and 39411. The main harness is $299 euros so I'm guessing eBay was the source for the $265 price.

299 euro minus 19% VAT
those additional harnesses would be for if you wanted to add or adapt factory AMI. I posted my link to AliExpress where I bought a factory one.
Another optional harness is their dual microphone adapter but i didn’t buy that either.

I started my upgrade today but got stuck at radio amp unit. My Q5 has factory sat Sirius radio and all I find in back rear bracket is an Amp unit with rectangular plug but not trace of Sirius unit. Kufatec cable came with an empty quadlock and wires and no instruction on how to mount MMI radio in trunk. Do you have any pictures on how to get cable wiring for quadlock and fit in to MMI HD radio?

if somebody is planning to take on this mod, hit me up — i have a custom white LED gauge cluster that i’d like to sell you. it currently has the red DIS, so it’s a good candidate for the color DIS swap. the white LEDs were fitted to a stock a4 cluster to allow for white illumination of the gauge needles of white needles are fitted (like s4).
