So I'm having a conversation with Luvemshaved this morining, and he states that our cars may be exempted form Smog Checks...
so I do a little research and this is what I came up with from the California Department of Consumer Affairs web site:
Smog Check Chart (http://www.autorepair.ca.gov/ftp/pdffacts/vehicle_model_years_subject_to_smog_check.pdf)
Not all vehicles must get a Smog Check. Additionally, some vehicles only need a Smog Check when they are being sold or being registered in California after previously being registered in another state. Whether or not a vehicle needs a Smog Check depends on the type of vehicle, the model-year, and the area in which the vehicle is registered.
Some vehicles are exempt from the Smog Check program
Legislation enacted during 2004 made several changes in motor vehicle Smog Check exemptions that will become effective next year. Following is a summary of the revised exemptions and the effective date of each change:
Beginning January 1, 2005, vehicles 6 or less model-years old will be exempt from the biennial Smog Check inspection requirement. For vehicles with registration renewals due in the 2005 calendar year, this exemption includes model-years 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Beginning January 1, 2005, vehicles 4 or less model-years old will be exempt from the Smog Check inspection requirement upon change of ownership and transfer of title transactions with DMV. In 2005, this exemption includes model-years 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Looks like no smog ceck to me.. (hello test pipe) [:D] [wrench] [drive][I]

Unfortunetly, though... I believe this rule makes it illegal for the new 2006 TT to be sold in CA due to emissions. Try going to the audi website and building a TT. It will ask for your zip code enter a CA one (or 93933).

You can not build a TT on audis website because there is no 06 model,From the charts it say are cars are not due for smog anymore, 2000-2005 models are not needed for a smog anymore acorrding to DMV's website, i will be call the DMV tomorrow to find out .

yes, that works for cars 6 years and less old, until they get that old...
BUT a police can still pull you over if he thinks you are mod-ed, he see's you have a FMIC or hears a loud exhaust, and make you test, which you will fail the visual if you have non carb -exempt aftermarket parts..
so stay stock looking and you are good for 6 years from new purchase date

Yeah, I noticed that the other day... [mad] [:(]
"The 2006 Audi TT models do not meet California emission standards and cannot be sold in California or in those states that have adopted California emission standards, i.e., New York, Massachusetts, Vermont or Maine. TT models from model year 2005 and earlier may be available in these states through our Certified pre-owned program. Contact your dealer for more information. "

Yes, you are exempt for 6 years as stated above, but after that you have to have regular smog checks like everyone else. AND as mentioned above, if you are cited, an officer can and will send you to a test only center.

So I'm good until 2009 (even though my car will be emissions compliant [;)] ), or if I keep the car that long.

Hey you guys can get your exhaust legalized from the BAR association. All they do is test your exhaust decibles from a distance and if it meets ca state requirements you are exempt from getting any more tickets for modified exhaust. Call up your local BAR and get it done.

...and if it doesn't pass... [rolleyes] [;)] Not that I'd be worried about mine. But no one would do that unless they were sure of it passing beforehand. I was once written up (in addition to other things - speeding) for my VW 1.8t HPA catback exhaust. I went to get it signed off at Court by another Cop who thought it was fine. It's all subjective.
Thing is, what about using an aftermarket CAT that still passes smog/emissions? My turboback MTM w/ HJS 100 Cell, relocated CAT/DP, should hypothetically pass it. So IMO, it should be approved. [;)]
