I have uncovered the original inventor of plasti dip!!
It's Audi!!!
My car sat in the sun today, I noticed the headlight switch looked funny. I rubbed it and the black, soft touch paint literally peeled off.
That's it, you heard it here first. Audi is the inventor of plasti dip and they used it on every button and knob in our cars. You know, the buttons that are constantly getting rubbed, pressed, flipped, touched, bumped... Thanks Audi. Genius. Perfect coating to use on parts like that.
Ok, I will stop ranting now.

Prefacelift buttons don't have soft touch if you want to swap them for ones that don't peel. For the headlight switch get an eBay switch. They work great and the knob portion isn't soft touch, but the rest is. It's the best of both worlds.

I already replaced a bunch of my climate control buttons witu junkyard non soft touch. If I only I could find a power folding mirror knob.

I'll remember to tell my bulldog to be gentle next time he jumps up on my door cards and scratches the soft touch on the rear ash trays!
Had soft touch in my mk4... Scarred for life, terrible experiences with that

[:(] no dogs allowed in the matte allroad! The black allroad is a bit more utility. I know yours is super utilitarian, and for that a no soft touch approach is appropriate.

I have 3 dogs and my A6 is my only car. I'm doomed.

Yet some "love" soft touch....mostly because they are still lucky to not have it peel on them. First button peeling off usually converts them to the other camp [:)]
<--- Lucky to have 01, nice black plastic.

Get avant, dogs belong in the hatch! Plenty of space for them there and there ieven is a special accessory called "dog net" to contain them in there.

Nah, I'm all good with my dogs. One rides up front, the others in the back seat. They are actually pretty good in the car. Can't blame any damage on them.

I agree. The eBay ones are of high quality, no doubt

I don't remember Benz or BMW using plastidip. So it goes, where can I find Genuine Audi OEM plastidip?
Jk

Lol, it's probably because the old one I had was a disgrace, haha. The turn knob on the new one does feel cheap though, a bit flimsy. Yet overall looks better though, the paint job is better than the old one. We'll see how long this $35 one lasts. May be jumping to conclusion too soon over the quality.
New OES was $98 on ECS, wasn't worth it.
The paint on the genuine one peels too easily, especially in the presence of high cabin temperature. The non OEM thus far is holding up well.

Except when they are small enough to squeeze past the net lol. Other than some soft touch scratches and fur I vacuum all the time no real dog damage. Allroad interior is really tough it takes it well

You may have solved some of my mystery about the previous owner of my A6. The steering wheel radio control volume up/down are all chipped, the fan control and others. I suspected that some real estate woman owned the car, hence, long finger nails. I may be wrong on that now that you have pointed this out.
Regards.

Plasti dip sprayed into a cup + a small paint brush = PERFECT touch up paint for chips and scratches on soft touch controls.
I did this yesterday and it came out great. Unless you're right up on it, you can't even notice. It also completely blocks the light from coming through. Why I didn't put this together when realizing that soft touch is basically freaking plasti dip is beyond me.

I did that to my one and only peeling button a few months ago and it did a pretty decent job. Miiiiles better at night.
