View Full Version : Fuel Pump. .how long do these last?
Just like the title says. . How long does the Audi fuel pumps last? What are the symptoms. .no start or? No issues with my 80k S/4. I'm just looking into preventative measures. Thanks for your suggestions.

My car had it's second fuel pump at 78k (Miles). They normally start to sound noisy as they're wearing out ..... A whirring sound louder than normal, but because it happens slowly, over a long period of time, you don't notice. Or one day they just fail and don't start, or are unable to supply sufficient fuel at constant high rpm and the car will start hesitating.

They last as long as you take care of them; as in do not run the car constantly on E, fill up when the gas light comes on, replace the fuel filter when need be.
There isn't ONE sign that will scream "your fuel pump is going to die soon" but if your fuel pump starts "sputtering" (as in put-put-put) with key in at ON-position prior to ignition or you ACTUALLY hear the high pitched whine coming from the back left of your car, it'll be time to take note. As for the car not starting, there might be more issues than JUST your fuel pump; might be your filter, might be your knock sensors, might be your starter but you shouldn't need to worry about those until it happens
Thanks for the reply, I will try to listen for any unusual sounds from the fuel tank area. I plan on doing another ski trip from LA to Whistler Canada at years end and have no desire to be stranded in no man's land.

What made you think you may have a dodgy fuel pump ???
I'm just inquiring...so far no issues. As for running the S/4 on "E" often. .no I didn't do that. To my knowledge, the fuel is a lubricant and coolant for the pump. Thanks again for all your replies.

Assuming the previous owner never replaced the pump, it lasted 120k miles and 7 years. The only obscure notice it gave was the improved gas mileage.
