Whats up guys? im looking to get a vag-com. I was going to go the cheap cable route and then pay for the download. I know some of you use ebay cables. can anyone point me in the right direction for the cheapest route? I had a page bookmarked on NEFMOTO but I must have deleted it. any help appreciated. [wrench]

i have a thread in my subscriptions that discusses this. it has the links to the ebay cables that work and a link to the thread on NEFMOTO confirming it. if i can only find it in like 200 subscriptions ill link it. [headbang]

Get this cable below, you can use it with VCDS lite and Windows 7/ Vista.

I don't see it listing what chip it has in that discription.

I would suggest buying one with a ft232r chip. If you ever want to use Nefmoto for flashing or logging you'll need the chip I mentioned. My first ebay cable I bought was a ch340 or something, works with vcds, but not with nefmoto.

I bought this one from this same seller -

Something like this will work and it comes with the software.

There's a version of the cable and software (12.12.1/3) out there that I used to have the address for--it kept the software from auto updating off the internet and messing with the cable. I will send a link to that site when I get home. I believe it was like $20 or so with $8.99 shipping.
Cant beat the price and full functionality. Ive seen a few for sale on CL locally where the sellers swear up and down that it all works and an invite to bring my laptop and hook it up to the car to demonstrate full functionality.

I wouldn't recommend those unless you know what you're about to get into. It'll work just fine for the first few times, but unless you block vcds with a firewall your cable will become a brick, it's not a matter of if but when. The hosts method to block updates doesn't really work, I've bricked 2 cables even after I blocked the update site through hosts. If you slip up even once (say you turned off the firewall for another reason and forgot to turn it back on), boom, brick. The only safe way to use these cables is to only ever use vcds on a virtual machine that doesn't have network access.Take it from me, I've bricked 3 cables in total, though I did manage to recover 2 of them, the third is outdated so I just use it for parts now. Recovering them involves manually reflashing 2 of the chips onboard, you need specialized hardware and experience in screwing with electronics, not noob friendly.

Cant you just unplug your router while messing with your car? If indeed the blocking doesnt work---if there is no signal from the internet, how would the cable brick?
Unplug router, do your work, plug router back in and let it reboot?
Im certainly not a computer dude, but wouldnt that work? Am I missing something here?

if on a laptop and I assume you would be, just disable wifi, there is a switch on most laptops, buttons on others

That does work, but like I said all it takes is one slip up and your cable's a brick. If you even so much as open vcds with the cable connected and an internet connection it's toast.

Either way, at $28 shipped you can look at it almost as a disposable product--you mess up?! Oh well, its like taking your loady out to a bad movie or something --oh well. Sucks but, ya move on and in this case....if youre careful maybe you never have to go down that road.

I thought the same thing when I bought the first one, by the 3rd cable I realized that I'm just throwing money away for no reason. You should seriously install it in a virtual machine. It's an hour or two to set up and you can be sure that the cable will never, ever brick.

What is a virtual machine? A cheap laptop with no internet connectivity? Something that you specify into your own laptop?

It's basically a virtual Windows installation running on top of your current installation. Google it for a better explanation that I can give.
