View Full Version : smoke after driving/braking? front passenger wheel well

I noticed after some driving and breaking somewhat extensively (it was a steep downhill), and when I parked the car, I noticed some smoke come out from the passenger front side wheel well. I can't definite the smell except that it wasn't oil (or, so I think it wasn't oil). Is it possible it's the brakes? but the driver side didn't smoke so that would seem to eliminate that. The smoke seemed to be coming from the back side of the wheel (where the calipers are) vs the front.

Now, a few more clues, potentially. I've had to replace the brake pads on the passenger side, and noticed there may have been some grease on the CV boot, but I can't tell if it was old grease or new. Furthermore, one time a few days before, I was going into a driveway, but miscalculated, and the passenger front wheel hit a low sidewalk a bit hard. Lastly, I don't know if because of this bumping, but it seems that the suspension is a bit stiffer, and I feel the road more.

I'll try and get a jack/jack stand in the next few days and pull the wheel out and see if a visual inspection shows anything, but perhaps the stuff I've described might clue someone experienced to exactly what might be going on. Whatever it is, is it something I can DIY? is it safe to drive?

Why did you replace one side brake pad only? That will just cause even more issues in the future with going back and forth. Did you bed the new pads? I installed new rotors and pads and you must bed them in, this heats them up extremely and they smoke as they burn off the oil that come on the pads.

Actually both sides brake pads were replaced. the issue was the cv boot rubber cover broke from old age or heat, and the grease was spraying somewhere hot that was burning it off.

thanks tho.
