I know this is an AUDI forum but i also know all turbocharging principals are the same and i posted this on Vortex ang got no response... since i drive an Audi, i know these forums could help me too, so TIA.
So we just finished installing a turbo kit on my friends 01 GTI VR6 and went for a spin and car is running great but it will not boost over 3 psi. I'm thinking the wastegate is stuck open?? its a T04B Garret turbo and he bought the famous Ebay external wastegate (Turbo XS or whatever). Cant hear the BOV either...(old greddy Type S that we just took out of another car and it was working). Anyway... it said it was supposed to have a 8psi spring. so we just had it connected from the bottom nipple of the wastegate straight to the compressor housing nipple, so we drove it and got 3psi and that was it, so I thought... well, it must be a 3psi spring instead and not 8psi spring, so I hooked up my manual boost controller between the WG and Compressor housing and no matter how much we cranked it, 3psi only... so I thought, lets just run it open, so I disconnected the nipple of the bottom of the wastegate and left it open... drove it, and again 3 psi.... What tha heck is going on?? makes me think the wastegate is stuck open... am I right?? any ideas would be greatly appreciated... don't know exsctly why but BOV wont sound at all either.... and just so you guys know, it did come with the "fire ring" and we did install it and we also installed a gasket between the wastegate flange/firering and manifold!!!(I actualy wasn't sure if it needed a gasket there) BTW, WG dump tube going back to exhaust, and not open! Thankls again in advance!!

Ok, so latest update... I checked the WG and it seems to be opening/closing as it should... I put a little compressor air in it and I could hear it opening and closing when I took the air out of the WG. so I guess the problem has to be the turbocharger not spooling enough... at least its what I think!!! I went to see specs of this turbo and it says its for Perkings engines??? Its a T04B71. diesel turbo?? could this be the problem?? are diesel turbos different than Gas turbos? (kinda makes sense to me bc diesel are made more for torque... and that means poss. slower spooling or lo boost??) Im really lost now!!![headbang] Anyone?

my guess is either a boost leak or your turbo is way to big for the enigne.

yep, you are right! Turbo was too big. that turbo was for a perkins marine engine... no need to say anything else right... thanks for the input anyways!!

if their was a way to get a VGT tubro to work somehow correctly that would be a good way to use a diesel turbo and it would work the way you want it .
