View Full Version : Avoid 034Motorsport

I recently had a bad experience that I'd like to share with fellow members. You should consider reading it if you plan on getting an APR upgrade, and especially if you plan on using 034Motorsport in Fremont, California.

Back in September, I hired 034 Motorsport to install an APR Stage 1+ ECU upgrade in my 2012 Audi TTS. The upgrade included new engine software, and a high pressure fuel pump. Unfortunately the upgrade didn't work well. The engine light illuminated during heavy acceleration, and the computer reported misfires at high RPMs.

I brought the car back for service several times. They tried new spark plugs, new coil packs, and even downgraded the fuel pump back to stock. None of that helped, and they were unable to make the upgrade work. Keep in mind this was a nearly new car, only 15 months old, and still under warranty. The upgrade never worked, and they couldn't find anything wrong with the car.

I eventually gave up, and they downgraded the car back to stock. So now I have a stock car, spent $1936 to have the car upgraded, they have all my money, and they have my high pressure fuel pump.

I politely asked for a partial refund. After all, I wanted to be fair. It wasn't necessarily their fault that the APR software didn't work, and I wanted them to be reimbursed for their labor costs. My total bill was $1936, and I asked them to refund $1116 for the following items:

* APR software
* Half the cost of the fuel pump
* The mysterious $100 convenience fee they charged
* Sales tax on the above items

That was nearly 3 months ago, I still don't have my refund, don't know if or when it will arrive, and I don't know how much they will refund me (if anything). I have written a dozen e-mails to them, written a letter to the service manager, and none of that seems to matter. All I hear are empty promises that they are working on getting me a refund of some kind.

To make matters worse, I had additional problems:

* After the initial upgrade, the technician accidentally left my old fuel pump in the car. I had to drive for an hour round-trip to return the fuel pump. It was a big inconvenience.

* During one of my return visits I had an appointment to put my car on the dyno. I arrived on time, and waited for almost 2 hours. I was eventually sent home, because it turns out the technicians were too busy that day.

* During two of my other visits I waited for more than an hour before anyone looked at my car. I understand that keeping exact appointment times is difficult. However, it would have been nice if someone called to let me know they were running behind.

* They initially said my refund would be given as a store credit. What the heck? Why would I want a store credit at a shop that was unable to make my only upgrade work? I talked them out of that.

* They said they would call me every day to give me updates on my refund. Yeah right! I don't hear anything from them unless I write an e-mail to complain.

So there you have it. They were unable to upgrade my car, kept all of my money, won't say when I'll get a refund, won't say how much they will refund, didn't keep their appointment times, didn't communicate well, and wasted huge amounts of my time.

I would stay far away from this place. There are other shops in the Bay Area that perform ECU upgrades. You might as well pick one that will stand behind their work.

That's too bad. What I don't know is if any other (non-Audi dealer) who would have shown a better level of customer service or resolution, given the same circumstances. The majority of your asterisk points seem all too common, no matter where you go. I've mostly concluded that if you like cars and want aftermarket work performed, you better be prepared to deal with what you just went through.

No doubt… all tuners have their faults (I know some of you are laughing… you really should seek counseling[facepalm]).

While I don’t own a 2012 TTS, if I did… I wonder if I’d not at least give a chance to the tuner whom took the very same car to a clean sweep at the Tuner Grand Prix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX80SHtSaIk)?

I fully realize that shining a favourable light might suggest that I’m a “034 Fan Boy” (or employee) so… let me be clear:
1) I do not now, nor have I ever worked at 034… although at times I feel like my office has been moved to their waiting room.

a. Related to above… service can be rather slow…
2) I typically ask for my spare parts so… providing you with the old fuel pump seems like proper protocol (it’s yours… you should have it (unless stated otherwise)).

a. Related to above, if you got charged for the HPFP, it seems your right to keep it.
3) You’re quite right that there are many places around the Bay that will reflash your ECU… and if that’s all you’re looking for and they are closer to you… that seems like a fair suggestion.

Do keep us informed on how the next shop manages your upgrade…

Hi Bryce,

You're definitely right about service being slow at 034Motorsport. I certainly understand that it's hard for them to predict how busy they might be. However, they should communicate this better. For example, if they know you're coming in for a 2:00 appointment, then they should call you before you arrive if it looks like they are running way behind. I spent many hours in their waiting room while my car was parked outside with nobody working on it.

The Tuner Grand Prix sounds interesting. However, I just wanted a simple Stage 1+ upgrade that would require 2 hours of my time for installation. That's basically what APR advertises, and what 034 led me to believe would happen. Instead, I got an upgrade that required months of debugging, 7 visits to 034, countless hours in the waiting room, new spark plugs, new coil packs, different fuel pumps, and a lot of frustration. All of that diagnosis work was labor time that I was paying for. I'm sure they could have figured it out eventually, but I was already out $1936, and had to draw the line somewhere. I was worried that I would spend another $1000 or $2000, and the problem might still persist, so I gave up.

Regarding the fuel pump that was left in my car, we had a clear understanding that they were to keep it. Leaving it in my car was a mistake on their part. I can forgive that basic mistake, but they should have given me a discount or some kind of perk for having to drive an hour to return it.

Regarding the fuel pump that they left in their car, it seems reasonable that they would have driven to a point of your convenience (i.e. your work) to retrieve it themselves. Were you just being "nice" by agreeing to drive back to their shop to give it to them?

034 is well known for terrible customer service. I have a friend who's car has been at their shop for over 18 months getting a 034's turbo kit installed on his R32 and another buddy who ordered the clutch waited months for it to find out they never ordered it from the manufacturer. He ask for a refund and they would only give him store credit so we ended up waiting another six weeks to finally get the clutch from them. I ordered a surge tank from them and ask to have it hard anodized they told me it would take three weeks of course it took over 6.
