Spreading the word on DMV's Legacy Plates Program: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/legacyplates/index.htm
Just put in my application for the 60's black plate to compliment my '14 Q5 TDI in Brilliant Black and eager for this program to get started. A novel idea for those of us who are working on the most ninja, blacked-out look as possible. Once any of the the Approved Application numbers hit 7500, DMV will start production!
Also applicable for those who have a yellow or blue car to match.... maybe.
Help spread the word to those who may be interested!

Thanks for posting this, pretty interested in the black on yellow plates I think they'll look better than the white plates. One downside is that I cannot imagine how the reflective properties will look on a black plate.

If I have vanity plates how will this work?
NGC224
01-07-2014, 10:57 AM
There is a special check box for you on the Pre-Order Form (REG 17L) in Section 3 "Converting from existing personalized plate".
To my understanding, it would be as if you wanted "DIGGLO" from a current plate transferred to "DIGGLO" on, say, a black w/ yellow lettering plate.
This may also apply to you (from the FAQs):
Q24: Can I order a different style of personalized plate with the configuration I want, and then convert the number to Legacy License Plates if the program is implemented?
A: Yes.
However, this will not be considered an exchange and the fee for each type of plate will be due when you order them. To view the fees for other types of special plates, go the Special Interest or Personalized Plates section on DMV's website: www.dmv.ca.gov.

To chronicle the process...
-Submitted my application w/ pre-order payment (via snail mail) on 12/13/13.
-DMV cashed the check 01/07/14.
-According to the FAQs, when your check is cashed, your application has been received and approved. So far, it looks to be around 1 month's time for the DMV to approve our applications.
For those who have had their check cashed, take a look at the BACK check image posted to your bank account--if you have that option. There should be a notation of one of your personalized plate choices; I suspect this to be the approved plate choice. I found this out searching the front and back check images for clues, and what they wrote on the back of my check happened to be my first choice. *fist pump*

You bet. Imagine it's a win/win for the state. If it fails you get your money back and Cali keeps the spread. If it succeeds, they keep the fees and earnings, and continue collecting annually.
It really is hard to believe that with all the car enthusiasts here this thing didn't hit the mark day one. :(

Fellow friends of SoCal!!! ...the GOOD NEWS:
MONTHLY UPDATE:
50's (yellow w/ black lettering) - 1755 orders (+65 from M)
60's (black w/ yellow lettering) - 7549 orders (+446)
70's (blue w/ yellow lettering) - 1473 orders (+60)
And the bad news: It looks like CA DMV has changed some details.
Previously: "In order for the program to be implemented, at least one of the three styles must receive 7,500 orders before January 1, 2015." [up]
Now: "Only the plate or plates that reach 7,500 orders before January 1, 2015 will be implemented." [>_>]
Extremely disappointing... I'll leave it at that.
On a lighter note, thanks for everyone's support; I can't wait to see all those black plates (especially those black on black) running around!

DMV site legacy plates FAQs: "Once the required minimum is reached, implementation of the program will go into development"
This probably is just aka 'we won't wait until 1/15/2015 to start'
Also THIS (http://blog.sfgate.com/stew/2014/06/05/classic-black-california-license-plates-are-back/) announcement looks promising.
Though the part of the article that states we "should expect them in the next few months" sounds rather ambiguous (especially in the DMV world), I'm hopeful to get them before the end of this year... In time for the holidays maybe??
Thunderiff

Looks like DMV updated the FAQ section... with the only questions we really care about:
Q2: When should I expect to receive the 1960’s plates I have pre-ordered?
A: Expect issuance in the late spring through summer 2015. Allow additional time for personalized plates.

Stoked that the 50's version didnt get put into production. I almost sold my 2 pairs for my '58 356. They're still worth something!
I've seen the 60's black plates on a few cars over the last couple weeks. Most recently I saw a Prius with them and 2015 tags so I assume they are the ones we're all waiting for.. The plate was gloss black with embossed yellow letters. It looked exactly like the pictures on the dmv page with CALIFORNIA in yellow above the plate numbers and nothing else.. I assume the black is reflective since state law requires it but I couldn't tell in the few seconds I saw the car.

I'm looking to keep my personalization but go from regular white plate to legacy black but can't find much info on this specifically. Thanks in advance!

Here's my personalized California Legacy Plate.
California law states that all new license plates need to be reflective. Believe it or not, the black legacy plates are reflective. This is what it looks like under flash:

Looks great, even with the flash, imo. I put the order for mine a couple of weeks ago for "Beyrut" - my hometown. I'm hoping they center it. It said it would be centered automatically on the form but I've heard a few different stories.

Once your plate is ready, they send you a letter to go to DMV and pick it up. You will surrender your old plates at the DMV at that time.

They mailed me mine. I've had them on my car for a month and I just have my old plates sitting on my desk at home. The package with the new plates didn't say anything about returning them. But I don't want to get hit with an extra registration fee or a penalty for keeping them. Guess I'll contact the DMV and confirm. Thanks.

Mailing them directly to your home is only available if your legacy plate is not personalized. My wife's plates came directly to our house and we just threw away the white California plates. For my plates, I had them sent to a local AAA office and they handled all the paperwork. I did not have to surrender my white personalized plates to the AAA office.

so if you get personalize plates, do you remove them from the car before you walk in the DMV to return them? Would hate to get a ticket in the parking lot!! hah

Not sure how that works. When I bought my first 2015 Silverado 2500HD back in January of this year, my truck still had dealer plates on it. I waited until I received the state issued plates in the mail to swap them to my personalized white plate. I had requested for my personalized Legacy plate in late August and received a note from my local AAA office in mid November that they were available for pickup. Had the personalized legacy plate on my truck for roughly a week and then I sold the truck. Obviously I removed my personalized plates from the vehicle upon handing the keys over. As for the S4, again I waited until I received my state issued plates to swap them at the local AAA office.
In your case, I would just bring a screw driver with you if they are demanding you to surrender your old plates. More than likely they won't want them.

Yes. I had tools with me to uninstall old plates when I got to DMV. Went in to exchange for my new plates. Installed new plates in DMV parking lot before driving off.
