View Full Version : Audi Q5 - Swapping 2013 headlights to a 2009-2012 - almost there !

There has been a lot of talk about swapping the new facelifted 2013 Q5 headlights into a 2009-2012 Q5s.

The consensus was, it was not possible due to design changes. Rears yes, fronts - no.

Well, I'm glad to report that I have successfully test fitted one FL headlight today. I was lucky, as nearby body shop just took a 2013 Q5 for headlight / front bumper replacement after a small accident, so we just borrowed one of the headlamps.

2010 headlight on the left and 2013 FL headlight on the right:

http://imageshack.us/a/img51/9167/04h1.jpg

Audi part # for the LEFT 2013 FL headlight:

http://imageshack.us/a/img69/186/55r0.jpg

The headlight fits, BUT:

1. you also need to buy a headlight support bracket, as it is completely different:

http://imageshack.us/a/img845/3724/qj33.jpg

Audi part # is 8R0 941 453A - this is for the LEFT headlight only:

http://imageshack.us/a/img96/2818/dvce.jpg

The new support has one extra mounting hole:

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/336/buo6.jpg

I belive this is Audi solution to the known Q5 light beam jitter problem (when you hit the pothole, you could see the light beam jittering briefly). I belive the extra mounting point is to prevent that from happening, as it supports the weight of the headlight housing from the back. There is also an extra part that connects this support to the car body - I belive it will be retrofitable as well. I will check that tomorrow and will post some more images and hopefully part #s.

2. you need to get harness extension (male to female) as the stock harness will not reach the socket on the FL headlight.

The sockets are the same:

http://imageshack.us/a/img46/131/z76e.jpg

However, the socket on the 2010 headlights is on the side of the headlight housing. On the FL one, the socket is situated right in the middle of the headlight housing:

http://imageshack.us/a/img545/2126/rnw0.jpg

As a resoult, the stock 2010 harness is just not long enough. You either need a harness extension cable of some sort, or you can cut off the harness socket and solder in 4" of extension cable. For obvious reasons, I would rather NOT do it, unless I have no other choice.

I was able to source one of those harness extenders at the time I had my 2002 Audi A4 several years ago - it was needed when to swap halogen headlamps to HIDs:

http://img594.imageshack.us/img594/9152/8h72.jpg

As you can see, it is a MALE to FEMALE extender. The sockets on 2002 A4 and Q5 are different though, so the one I have will not fit. Anyone knows where to source a similar extender for a Q5 HID headlights ?

Great, thank you !

I was to try that number myself, as A4 B6 headlights connectors that I have on hand are 1J0 973 735 (female) and 1J0 973 835 (male), so I was suspecting in case of Q5 number the 7 may need to be changed for 8 as well. And you prooved it is indeed the case.

OK, so here is the complete parts list to do the swap:

- headlight support plate left - 8R0 941 453 A
- headlight support plate right - 8R0 941 454 A
- headlight socket MALE - 1J0-973-837 - two pcs needed
- headlight socket FEMALE - 1J0-973-737 - two pcs needed
- headlight support bracket left - 8R0 941 355
- headlight support bracket right - 8R0 941 356
- headlight adjustment element - 4G8 806 305 - two pcs needed
- allen screw - WHT 000 372 - two pcs needed
- torx screw - N 107 511 01 - four pcs needed

Please note that only the support plates and sockets are mandatory for this swap - all other parts are were added by Audi to fix the 'headlight jitter' problem that was present on 2010 Q5s. Not sure if that is was a part of a FL, or those parts were already present on 2011 and 2012 cars. Someone with 2011/2012 car would have to verify that.

I have paid like $70 for all those parts. Should have them in 2 days time.

I will post images showing the headlight support bracket and how it is fitted on 2013 Q5 tomorrow.

Just got today 4 brand-spanking-new fronts and rears. $1400 total shipped. I still expect to get at least $800 back from selling my current pre FL rears and fronts on ebay.

Life is good :)

OK, some more images.

Here is the original headlight socket - 1J0 973 737. I will need to DIY my own cable extension using another socket like that and its male counterpart 1J0 973 837. Luckily, all the cables are numbered, so that would make soldering much easier:

http://imageshack.us/a/img33/8903/jscs.jpg

Here is the headlight support bracket that is missing on my 2010 Q5:

http://imageshack.us/a/img826/4018/6iof.jpg

It is bolted to the car frame - I will probably have to drill 2 holes to attach it:

http://imageshack.us/a/img854/2194/g7jx.jpg

The headlight support bracket ataches to the rear fixing of the headlight support plate - making the headlight much more rigid, and hopefully - less prone to light beam jitter.

Just a quick update. I have found out that the new FL headlights should have a rubber hose fixed to them. They were not present on pre-FL headlights, and the FL headlights I bought came without those, so I need to order those as well.

http://i1226.photobucket.com/albums/ee407/junspi/ScreenShot140_zpsc4b49dbd.jpg

Left:8R0-941-717
Right:8R0-941-718

I belive those hoses were added to avoid vapor condensation inside the headlights.

http://imageshack.us/a/img197/2581/n2mj.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img546/2063/7de3.jpg

The hose connects to the back of the headlight:

http://imageshack.us/a/img51/3826/nk6q.jpg

Got those the next day and already thought I already have all the parts needed:

http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/6248/ec2u.jpg

only to realise I will also need a full set of rubber grommets for my extension cable sockets, which are needed to seal off the cables entering the sockets (otherwise moisture could enter the sockets and create short).

Aggggh ! Beeing a pioneer is always hard ! I should have those by friday.

Elberoth
10-11-2013, 07:20 AM
OK, got the remaining parts today. I was missing the grommets, that seal the cable against the harness socket housing. Each socket has 14 inlets *4 = 56 are needed.

http://imageshack.us/a/img703/7438/hdts.jpg

Since the headlight uses only 11 out of 14 available pins, you need to seal off the remaining 3 holes with a suitable cap (orange and green).

http://imageshack.us/a/img21/4818/dz54.jpg

Now need to put those harness extensions together. Some soldering ahead !

Elberoth
10-12-2013, 01:22 PM
Put those harness extensions together today. It was soooo labour intensive - it took me almost 5h ! I did not think it would take so long, but there are so many wires, that need to be cut, tinned, soldered, insulated, installed etc + some unexpected problems. Anyway, here it is:

http://imageshack.us/a/img837/7413/30sz.jpg

And here are all the parts needed to do the front swap (minus the headlights and headlights support plates) - they don't look as scary anymore:

http://imageshack.us/a/img94/2421/o28r.jpg

I was to install the headlight tomorrow morning, but unfortunately, I have just learned that AUDI Poland has shipped to my dealer the wrong headlight support bracket. Instead of left and right, they sent me two lefts [headbang][headbang][headbang] - that is this black metal part on the bottom right.

I'm gonna order that missing part on monday, but that also means that the final install will be postponed by another week [:(]

Here is a full DIY guide on how to fabricate your own extensions.

The parts you will need:

- 1J0 973 737 (socket) - 2 pcs
- 1J0 973 837 (socket) - 2 pcs

- 000 979 225 E (fat wire with pin) - 5 pcs
- 000 979 226 E (fat wire with pin) - 5 pcs
- 000 979 131 E (thin wire with pin) - 6 pcs
- 000 979 132 E (thin wire with pin) - 6 pcs

- 357 972 740 D (thin grommet) - 24 pcs
- 1J0 972 741 A (fat grommet) - 20 pcs
- 3C0 972 841 (thin cap) - 8 pcs
- 357 972 841 (fat cap) - 4 pcs

plus soldering iron, heat gun and some heat shrink.

(Please not that the dealership ordered for me the wrong sockets. Instead of 1J0 973 837 they ordered me 5Q0 973 837 [headbang]. They are gray instead of black, and needed some trimming to make them work. Get the right sockets the first time, and that will save you 1 hour worth of work).

1. First of all, you need to cap the unused holes in the sockets. There are 14 holes - 6 big and 8 small - but only 11 are used. The remaining 3 need to be capped to prevent water from entering the socket. As you can see - there are two types of caps - thin and fat:

http://imageshack.us/a/img708/516/fdqf.jpg

2. Wires come with pins already installed on both ends. Unfortunately, they are same type on both ends (Male - Male and Female - Female) so you need to cut them in half and solder Male-Female pairs. I cut mine in 3 parts, as the extension doesn't need to be that long (the wire is about 24 inches long).

http://imageshack.us/a/img703/485/dmxn.jpg

All cables nicely cut:

http://imageshack.us/a/img600/896/ax0p.jpg

3. Now it is time to put the grommets on the cables:

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7576/f3qm.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img14/2927/2y7q.jpg

4. Before soldering the pairs together, cut to size and put 3" long heat shrink tubing:

http://imageshack.us/a/img534/2967/4j5a.jpg

5. Solder the wires in pairs (there should be 22 pairs):

http://imageshack.us/a/img405/7546/4k0m.jpg

6. Put the heat shrink tubing on and use heat gun to shrink it:

http://imageshack.us/a/img21/2538/jeyq.jpg

7. Now you can insert all pins into the sockets. Move the grommets to the very end of the cable, so that they will fit flush into the socket:

http://imageshack.us/a/img138/2883/0ybu.jpg

Each pin has its number on the socket, so running cables is as easy as connecting 1 with 1, 2 with 2 etc.

8. Some hours later, and you should have a nice harness extensions [:D]

I have swapped both headlights today. With all the missing parts bought and new harness extensions already prepared, it was a breeze. Took me only 2h to do both fronts.

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/4172/ml96.jpg

Rignt now, the high and low beams work, turn signals work, DRLs work, BUT do not dim. When you switch the low beams or turn signal on, the DRLs instead of dimming - just switch off.

I was told that it is normal and they need new coding. Tomorrow I'm paying a visit to some local coding guru, so keep your fingers crossed. I'm gonna do the rears tomorrw as well.

Nison_Li

I belive it is 28%.

I just got the programming done. Everything works as if the car came with those fronts and rears from the factory. Even the cool dim to full lit fade feature works.

I also got the Bluetooth and cruise control installed. Next will be the multifunction steering wheel (already got the right module installed with the cruise control) - need to buy one now.

I will post some finał images when I get back home and wash the car.

BTW - great news for those afraid of making their own harness extensions: Kufatec just started offering a suitable adapter.

I've been in contact with Kufatec for the past 3 weeks, but unfortunately the adapter was not ready when I needed it. Not only it is ready made, but it also costs only half as much as parts bought from Audi stealership needed to homebrew one !

Pre-facelift Q5 fitting the newest taillights is plug and play and requires no harness with the kit available. A nice touch too is the North American pre-facelift Q5's have the proper turn signal operation as well to use the European taillights with the orange blinking turn signal.

Have a set in stock that will be on sale shortly...

Are there any pre made adapters available for both headlight and twilight conversion? I am planning on starting to slowly purchase parts to do the conversion this summer. I am in NC. I am assuming the best place to obtain all the parts necessary (except the adapters) such as the headlight brackets and tubes will be the dreaded dealer?
Also if I can use the kufatech adapter on a US model do you still need an extension or will it reach properly?

alvinfromhawaii,

You would have to solder the repair wires to create the harness. I made the harness wires from scratch using one wire with the required connectors.

FYI, I can also supply the repair wires at a cheaper cost than the OEM ones. I make them using OEM connectors.

Forgive me for the ignorance. Its only been a week. Once I complete the conversion In order to program these using vag com do you need the computer program or will one of the handheld ones work? How would I go about getting the proper flash codes? I'm trying to figure if I am going to invest in a vag-com or try and start looking for friends in the regional forum .

blasterman
06-06-2014, 08:11 AM
jdip,

There is no need to make changes in vag-com if you are changing the tails. Unless, you want the turn signal to work in sync with the brake light like the facelift models, this feature would require the use of vag-com. Getting a vag-com for diagnostics or to make modifications to the car's system is IMHO a great tool to have.

And my understanding is if I want to reset my oil light a scanner will work. All other mods such as when I accomplish this head and tail light project will require the computer software? Is there many manufacturers of software or pretty much just Ross tech? I'm trying to find some peeps in my area on the regional forum. And very sorry to take is off topic

Finally ready to start purchasing the parts.
Is it possible to get all the needed parts for the headlight swap listed w/ numbers in one post to make it nice and easy for anyone down the line? I'm also in search of the codes for vag com for both the headlight swap and the tailights to have them perform as the fl models do.
I don't plan on making my own harness so that won't be an obstacle.
Thanks in advance!

Complete kits with everything needed are available:

https://scontent-b-pao.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/t31.0-8/10295521_696172453763829_1808164675744755675_o.jpg

Headlight kits include all needed items and require only minimal coding for xenon models. Upgrading from halogen is also available as well, but does require a bit more work.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t31.0-8/964560_525265570854519_800811659_o.jpg

The taillights available for the pre-facelift models do not require harnesses and are prepared here to be fully plug and play.

If anyone is interested please don't hesitate to shoot over a PM or email: [email protected]

Has anyone been able to officially get the correct coding for the facelift headlights to work. Checked a few Q5 forums and there seems to be some issues with the bulb out warning lights and such. Has anyone got the correct vcds coding for the headlights to be 100% functional?

Was also hoping to get a "definite" parts list for the upgrade. I want to be able to walk into my Indy shop who can get me a deal hopefully on all the parts and give them a list to order all the small parts and brackets for the headlight upgrade. I'll provide the headlights and they can install and code for me I hope. But I need to find the right coding for the headlights to work.

Thanks everyone!

Anyone done this in the states? I completed all the install for the project, looks great. Except the DRL turn off when the headlamps come on.
I went to a local Boston garage in Waltham, MA -- he seems to think I need a new coding control module for the lamps to work properly.
Currently-- DRL come on daytime, at night (or when I switch on the headlamps) the DRLs turn off.

Suggestions?

I don't remember the setting but there's a dimming setting for when headlights are on, if its set too low the DRL's will turn off. At least that's the case with '13 and on.

OK, but you didn't change any additional coding or control modules, right? Just the headlamps, correct?

Wow man. That is just awesome. I know this thread is a couple of years old but I just bought a base 2009 Q5. I really really want to upgrade these lights to the facelift version but have no idea where to find them. Can you point me in the right direction?

I have done some looking into and found individual parts and pieces, but really afraid to order the wrong stuff. Some expert advice would be really helpful.

Have no fear, complete packages are here:

Headlights | Q5 Post-Facelift Bi-Xenon Retrofit Package (http://europrice.us/headlights-q5-post-facelift-bi-xenon-retrofit-package)

All you need to do is select which headlights you have now (this ensures you receive the parts you need for the conversion) and that you are LHD (Left Hand Drive). Packages come with installation instructions and all of the parts needed for a complete installation.

If you have any questions or other needs don't hesitate to PM or email: [email protected]

+1

Just bought a pair of FL housings and figuring out what else I need to source besides the brackets and hardware outlined in this thread.

So far I think the ballasts will swap over (8K0941597 pre-FL, 8K0941597B FL), they're the same D3S 35W ballasts used on a bunch of VAG cars.

The LED control modules are different:

8R0907472 (A/B) (pre-FL) --> 4G0907697 F

and new LED lights themselves:

8R0941475A/B + 8R0941476A/B

yakev724

I'm in the process of completing the swap and have some questions about the install. Hopefully this will help anyone else doing the swap in the future.

First, on the driver's side, the bracket mounted perfectly using the existing holes and bolts which hold the power steering reservoir in place:

http://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.audiworld.com-vbulletin/1440x1080/80-buk5mh1_b364115e8b9c3ba5a97c84b467116f9c290eb8eb.j pg

On the other side, however, I need to drill holes in the fender support. This is where I'm a bit confused. The hole on the driver's side had threads for the bolt to screw into and if I drill on the pass side, I think I'd need nuts on the other side to hold them securely. Also - there's an airbox support there (pass side) which the bracket would get in the way of. How should I get around this?
The OP calls for ordering 4x N10751101 - I presume these are to mount the two brackets to the fender supports? Why not reuse the PS bracket bolts on the driver's side? Or are these bolts for something else in the install?

(where I'd need to drill the holes)

http://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.audiworld.com-vbulletin/1440x1080/80-3g6x0nq_cd238f57759ab7716f122b410496474b2713df52.j pg

(the airbox support which would get in the way)

http://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.audiworld.com-vbulletin/1440x1080/80-jntuq8c_c59702d895b7ce3033b03e2e4d2e219e6d1c19ba.j pg

Next, I'm using kufatec harness extensions. The only way I've found to route the driver's side extension is in such a way that the factory harness wires are right against the support bracket, which is a bit concerning as I'm worried they'll get damaged over time. Here's a top-down shot:

http://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.audiworld.com-vbulletin/1440x1080/80-50zzgpn_75588ae2d8848a0c85b59941ed25edd780154233.j pg

Final minor question - how are the rubber hoses supposed to be routed? I just kind of let them hang down but feel like they should be routed/secured somehow so they're not just free to move around in the engine bay.

Hoping to stop by a dealership to check out the engine bay of a new 2.0T to hopefully get some answers! In the meantime if anyone can chime in, that would be much appreciated.

Stopped by my local dealer today to check out the engine bay of a newer Q. Looks like the driver side bracket bolts in to the same holes as the PS pump, and the pass side has a couple holes in the exact same spot, just in front of the airbox support. Will be getting a set of drill bits and updating with correct size. Not sure if I can get a nut on the other side of the support to really secure the bracket in place...

(Re-)installed mine last weekend, all good now.

For the pass. side bracket, I ended up drilling holes in the support. I made a paper template to measure the location of the driver side holes then flipped it and used it on the pass side. Didn't work great but the bracket is evenly spaced around the airbox support bracket (see my photos above) so that should be a good reference. Drilled some pilot holes and progressively increased the bit size until the screws fit snugly.

(photo of the pilot holes)

http://i.imgur.com/HzpK3f7.jpg

For the harness wires, I bought some Tesa felt tape (oem stuff used on wiring) and wound it tightly around any exposed wires for protection. Feel much better about it now.

http://i.imgur.com/tI7vbYN.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/rVUPiVc.jpg

Finally, one issue I came across was in purchasing the DRL LED modules. The pass. side module I purchased was broken - one of the LEDs was blue! Upon closer inspection, the top LED itself had the yellow transparent piece missing, allowing the (inherently) blue light to shine through. If purchasing used modules for this retrofit, be sure to inspect the LEDs and make sure both appear yellow.

Final result - (out of focus, sorry)

Should work. Both are just D3S modules and have the same mounting points.

You need LED control modules + LED modules (lights) for the FL lights.

depends on whether you have non-AFS or AFS lights. AFS turn with the steering wheel, have an extra bulb next to the projector. I think it was only available on prestige 2011, but not sure.

I've got a pair of housings (non-AFS) in mint condition if you're interested. Local so wouldn't have to ship.

I would go with the new ones, even if you would have to keep the fronts for a while. Apart from Audi enthusiasts, nobody will be able to tell a difference.

Both pre and post lift rears have the same 4 wires. The only difference is the plug. So you can get the Kutatec set, cut off the plug, and put on the right one.

There are diagrams on the net, showing which wire goes where.

Great write up!

But for some odd reason, I thought you are going from 2013 headlights to 2010. Thought it was strange, but was not going to question as to why you decided to do so, as to each their own. Only after I saw the pictures of your finished and installed product, I've realized that I was going on about all of this backwards.

OK, I have successfully upgraded mine 2009 q5 rear halogen lights with
original prefacelift (old) led lights. There is no need for the adapter since
the pins and wiring is the same I just had to cut some of the black plastic housing
arround of the led lights connector so that I could plug the pins to the cars halogen
connector. The lights (drl, brake turn signals) work as they should. They look great.

The only problem is that the board computers now shows error for both left and right light.

I wasnt expecting this since I thought it is just plug and play.

I have contacted the local audi dealer and was told that they can do nothing about it,
that there is no option to program or clear the error.

Is that true?

Hey guys, stupid question...

I have a 2012 loaded Q5, and I can't find instructions on how to replace the facelift rear lights. Can anyone help me out here?

Also, just to verify, eBay has tail light and adapter kits for about $500. Will I need anything else other than the tail lights themselves, and the adapters?

Also, as a bonus question, can anyone, if possible, tell me what list of parts I would need for my 2012 Q5 for the facelift headlights? (Mine are AFS) I ask this because someone mentioned that the 2012 Q5 may not need an adapter of some sort? Also, I'm totally willing to revive this thread. Good stuff here!

P.S. I'm a US driver, on the left hand side of my car. :)

Thanks!

Hey guys, stupid question...

If you go to the first post of this thread you'll see all the info you need with part numbers. And images... 2012 will be the same as the 2010 most likely. Based on the info in this thread you just need an extension for the harness [emoji1474]

The rears are pretty straight forward to replace. Pop off the two covers that cover the bolts on each side and replace with the new lights. One word of caution with the eBay lights, make sure that the harnesses are for a US spec Q5. The housing is different as well as the pin out. If you can't find the correct harnesses shoot me a pm. I have been making those harnesses for several people on the forum. I also make the headlight and the license plate led conversion harnesses.

So I just bought these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/112215426048

And plan on buying these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/141963635348

With these parts, I should just be plug and play, and be set, yeah?

Is there a way someone could help code them so that they are EXACTLY like the facelift 2013+ lights? Read that they do not signal the same, and that (this may be false) the turn signals are red instead of orange without coding?

Agautohous, I think you were talking about headlights with your ecoding promo, but it would be cool if you could help with this, too.

Thanks guys.

Unfortunately, that harness will not work on your car. The harness uses a 4 pin connector to connect to your car, US spec Q5's use an 8 pon connector. The pon out will also be different since this looks like an ROW retrofit harness. Send me a pm and i can point you in the right direction.

If possible, can someone tell me specifically (for the US models) what will swap over between the headlights? Do I need to only get the LED DRL modules that have those massive heatsinks on them? I can't seem to get a straightforward answer, only guesses.

I have all parts needed on my list except the Headlight extension adapters, and the actual headlights. But If I need to buy all the ballasts and modules, I may just buy a set that have them already built in on ebay.

P.S. I have AFS equipped, so finding the right headlights is kind of a pain when you don't want to spend $1500-$2500 for everything.

Thanks in advanced!

Check the DIY it's very thorough. But from what I remember there's two modules and the main bulb? If it doesn't come with a DRL module then 3 modules.

Ordered lights with all the electronics. ($430 per light on eBay!) Just waiting for misc parts. Can anyone maybe help me with instructions on the swap? I know someone was saying they did, but didn't get them out yet. Haha

Also, I plan on coding all the lights, but if I don't for a bit, will I get any errors? I'm hoping it will all work nicely with what I currently have. From what I read, out looks like I'll be good.

Anyone done the swap with AFS yet?

Thanks everyone!

Reporting another easy swapped Tail Lights! Thank you Blasterman for getting me the adapters. Now to just find a complete drivers side Headlight with AFS. Then I can swap the head lights.

Side note, does anyone know if I can increase the brightness of the lights via vag or vcds? It doesn't look like they are as bright as the should be in person. (The bottom photo is really dramatic, it doesn't look that bright.)

Also, if there is any way to have the "running lights" (the big ring around the edge) on while my DRL are on during the day?

Thanks everyone!

This link helped with vagcom to fine tune the drls, but the main thing is to turn the prefacelift 7% duty cycle to the post facelift 28% duty cycle to avoid any errors.
Also make sure that when headlights are on the drls are set to 100% duty cycle

the question is that would the support bracket is compatible international?

Support bracket should be the same but if you source used lights from the USA they will all be LHD. Best shot is to get them from the U.K. Or Japan I think.

Completed front and rear conversion thanks to this thread, so thanks OP for putting this together!

Some thoughts: The pre-FL headlight LEDs are dimmed to 9% with low beams on, and need VAGCOM modification to increase the brightness to FL levels (28%) otherwise they won't turn on AFAIK. Now looking at my converted FL tails, it seems like the DRL (which I turned on) are rather dim. I haven't been able to compare side by side with an actual 2013+ Q5, but do you guys think a similar lower LED output for the pre-LED tails carries over to the FL tails?

I used the Carista app to modify my settings, so adjusting the tail light brightness isn't an option for the app. Maybe some of the VCDS folks can chime in on what theirs are set at...

base14

Just to follow up on this, they indeed ARE less bright than the actual Facelift cars. Looked at them side by side next to a 2014 Q5 and the retrofits LED ring were not as bright. I just need to find someone with VCDS in the Portland area to see if I can configure these to be true OEM brightness.

This is a really old thread but does anyone know if the ballasts and bulbs from the 2009 headlight assembly are transferable to the 2013 housing? Ballasts and head light bulbs are the same between pre-FL and FL. I believe there are small variations in the turn signal bulbs, but that’s minor details. A word of caution though, our ballasts seem to fade in light output over time. I used a newer ballast from my preFL lights, replaced by the original owner before I purchased the car, to put into my FL lights and the light output was noticeably brighter and bluer. My FL set only came with one ballast but it swapped right over from my old preFL set.

Maybe that was the HID bulb which was degrading over time, not the ballast ?

That was my thought too, but I had bought 2 new Osram CBI HID bulbs and replaced them a couple months before swapping the headlight housing. The side with the newer ballast was still about 20% brighter and the cutoff line was slightly blue as opposed to the white/yellow cutoff from the older ballast.

Thanks for that. Does that apply only to the xenon ballast? What about the LED DRL control module (i.e. 8R0941475B)? The OEM Valeo lights I'm looking at don't appear to have it. Would that be something else I would have to source as it doesn't appear to be on the preFL or at least looks quite different (hard to tell as I have not ripped anything apart yet)?

The led drls are separate ballasts, usually on the inside of the unit. Mine came with my headlights fortunately. You’re gonna have to source those and I’m not sure if they’re the same preFL and FL.

It seems you want to do two conversions in one big step:

- halogen to xenon
- pre-FL xenon to post-FL xenon

I have no idea if that has been done before. There is a special cable set from Kufatec for halogen to xenon conversion:

https://www.kufatec.de/shop/en/audi/q5/q5-8r/xenon-hid-headlights-adapter-audi-q5?info=929

It should work with FL xenons as well.

Make sure those extensions have rubber gromets (seals) around the cables entering the socket. I do not see them on this picture. Without the seals, you will get a short in wet conditions.

The lights and adapters finally came, but what it seems- male adapter should have mirrored inserts as they just won’t fit into the socket.

Any ideas?

I have bigger problem now - when all parts came in car was on Airbag recall. Now it came I checked the car adapter vs what came from Kufatec.

It doesn’t match... anyone help how to resolve it? The middle wire is from Kufatec. Left is car’s female and right is OEM’s light Male.

Okay. So, what's up with your branding? "Audi" instead of the rings (looks good BTW). . .and just what in the hell is a "PQ5?" Did I miss something, another thread somewhere? [:)]

AUDI instead of rings is just going back to the roots with a trunk emblem - fished for it in a junkyard, retouched it slapped it on the trunk.

PQ5 is just another DIY - it’s my baby, hence I wanted to make it my own + I always liked how SQ emblem looks, at the same time I’d feel like an idiot posing my car to be something it isn’t. I’ve came up with an initial of my nickname, made an emblem look ‘Audi like’ and here we are. I’ve done couple more of ‘my’ changes to the car, but you can’t see them on this picture.

Well how about some pics of your personalizations, like a close-up of the PQ5 emblem.

IMO, the emblems are cool. What Audi did you get the Audi emblem from? More info on the P would be cool too.

I have a couple of Audi Sport emblems a qw member had made several years ago (I’m guessing 8-10 years now) that I put on my previous Avant. Didn’t feel like a poser, as it was definitely “sport”. [emoji16]

I have a Audi Q5 8R (2013) in UK, would you have the component codes for the rear lights in the picture??

Thanks.

Just got today 4 brand-spanking-new fronts and rears. $1400 total shipped. I still expect to get at least $800 back from selling my current pre FL rears and fronts on ebay.

Life is good :)

Hello!

I have already swapping my tail lights for the facelift, and now I want to do the same with the headlights.

For all you made this mod I have some questions:

- The xenon unit control is the same?
- Upgrading for the facelift headlight will bring a gain in light quality at night? What is your feedback/experience?

Thanks in advance!

Hi guys

Apologies if this has been asked but there are a few iterations on the same questions. As I’m a novice just wanted to be clear

I have a 2009 q5 3.0tdi and I am buying front bits from a 2014 and rear lights from 2016

To do the conversion I need the below

New shape bonnet
New shape Bumper with grill
Headlights
Rear lights

To fit headlights I need
- headlight support plate left - 8R0 941 453 A
- headlight support plate right - 8R0 941 454 A
- headlight socket MALE - 1J0-973-837 - two pcs needed
- headlight socket FEMALE - 1J0-973-737 - two pcs needed
- headlight support bracket left - 8R0 941 355
- headlight support bracket right - 8R0 941 356
- headlight adjustment element - 4G8 806 305 - two pcs needed
- allen screw - WHT 000 372 - two pcs needed
- torx screw - N 107 511 01 - four pcs needed
- Headlight hose Left:8R0-941-717
- Headlight hose Right:8R0-941-718

I have 4 questions
1. If I buy the kufatec socket extension adapter do I still need the male and female sockets? (1J0-973-837) does anyone have a link to the adapters
2. To fit the support brackets and the plates do I need to do any drilling etc?
3. After install I need to get the DRL brightness changed for when indicating. Anything else?
4. Am I missing anything?

The rear lights from what I gather are plug and play with again with the kufatec adapters

I’m buying a 2016 set of rear lights, are the adapters the only thing I need?

Does anyone have a link to the adapters?

Apologies for the length of the question. Hope all makes sense

Hello Blasterman,

I recently bought at a Junker for $250 both rear headlights from an Audi Q5 2015 to do them on my 2012 Audi Q5. I mounted them lights and they fitted snuggly but plugs aren’t the same. Could you help me out with that? I’m also looking to facelift fronts as well.

Kind regards,
Bryan

This has been mentioned in the thread several times. You need to either buy the adapter, or make your own.

Hi everyone I picked up a set of rear tail lights AND a set of these adapters: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/263960626751

The lights I bought look like this on the rear so I figure I need these adapters to use on my 2012.

Hey for the connectors you have, I have the same ones and the same tail lights, when you say some "DIY" you did, did you just break the plastic guides off the kufatec connectors? If you did, let me know because I'm in the same boat and I'd rather not wait a few more weeks for "new" connectors to arrive.

I just took the kufatec connectors I had which were the US to EU model and used cutters to cut the side guides off.

My turn signals are the big brake part in the middle of the fl read tail and my brakes are the outside and what I believe is the amber turn signal.

I assume I can change this without vagcom by changing the connector pins on the adapter?

I think someone mentioned prenfacelift it went

1 2
3 4

And I have to change it to

1 3
2 4

By changing that on the kufatec connector it should work I'm assuming?

Ah hah I figured it out!

Anyone who's grabbing junk yard 2013+ facelift taillights or picking up tails to retrofit and using a kufatec connector this is for you:

I picked up audi 8r0-945-093-d and 8r0-945-094-d facelift US spec tail lights (red turn signal) and a pair of the kufatec connectors part 39605-2. That's important because I believe those connectors are wrong for those lights and you want 39605-3 the dash 3 meaning the plastic guides will line up from connector to tail light.

If you have the ones I have its TWO modifications you need to do to make it work.

1. Clip off the little plastic side guides on the kufatec connector on both sides so it'll now fit into the 2013+ tail light you have. That part is easy and clipping pliers or a low speed dremel does it.

2. The most important part and it avoids a re-code with vag.

The pin layout on the kufatec connector is listed there if you look closely and its done as

1-3-2-4 and it looks like this

1- 3-

2- 4-

Where the (-) s are the orientation of the pin in the connector from kufatec. The easiest way to correct this is to take the end that connectors to the tail light (the smaller end) and use a small tool like a very small flat head (like for working on electronics, phones, etc) and lift the clip on one side of the connector to slide out the bracket part.

You'll be left with the part that connects to the light like and it's 4 horizontal pin holes.

Press to release the middle two connectors and swap them. You'll have to press to release twice each connector as there is two release tabs holding that tiny pin/wire in.

Just swap the middle two and reattach bracket.

Plug it all back together, affix the connector to the hole, test and it should work the same as your pre facelift lights where the narrow led strip is your turn signal and the big part is your brake light.

Once tested okay put back the plastic cover(s) and enjoy!

No re coding needed just by swapping the wires on the connector. You donht have to do anything to the car and risk damaging any piece of the audi Vs the connector.

I belive those hoses were added to avoid vapor condensation inside the headlights.

Hey all, I know this maybe simple but where does this his connect to on the headlight? There are a few places it could connect but I couldn’t find info on exactly where it goes
