View Full Version : Wheel size & offset
Hey Guy's,
I need your help. I've spent weeks researching this but I thought I would just ask and save me some hair pulling.
I'm looking at these wheels for my 2011 A6. I am running ST coils but it's not slammed.
http://www.audizine.com/gallery/data/500/aceconvexgm.jpg
I had a set of 19 x 9 et33 with 245/35/19 wheels and they did rub going over bumps. This set up was just over 10" wide.
http://www.audizine.com/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_2865.jpg
The question is do I go with 245/35/19 with 19x8.5 et38
Or 255/35/19 with 19x8.5 et45?
Or will either of these be an issue.
I like the wheel and tire being almost flush with the fender but I really don't like rubbing. I have people in the back seat all the time and I don't want the hassle.
Thanks

I don't see how the 245/35 would cause rubbing. I'm running the same but on 20in and I have no issue or running with peeps in the back. We're you running on the coils or stock springs?

Mine has standard le mans suspension and wheels which are 8.5 x 19 et47 and are nowhere near rubbing, in fact I'm getting wider rims with et45 which will still fit
hybrid turbo, decat, water meth, improved intercooling, injectors on their way

I am running 255/35/19 on 19X8.5 et 32 wheels while lowered on H&R sport springs and get some rub when loaded and hitting dips in the road. I honestly feel pulling back to an et38 while keeping the 255/35/19 tire would eliminate the rub since it is pulling the edge of the tire in 6mm (5mm for you). Pulling in to et45 will loose the flush look and require spacers to get them back out to where you would want them.

I think his rubbing issue is brought on by the combination of the ride height, the 9" wide wheel and the et33mm offset. Most likely, changing one of those variables would help. For example, that offset and ride height would probably work if the wheel was 8.5".
I agree that going with an 8.5" in wheel width and an et45 offset would not give you a result you'd be happy with.

I was running these wheels with the st coils. I don't even have my car that low, I'm sure I have at least a 1 finger gap. The tires were stretched and rubbed against the fender when driving over bumps or dips in the road.

Original 19 x 9 et33 with 245/35
Choice 1 19 x 8.5 ET38 w 245/35
Choice 2 19 x 8.5 et45 w 255/35
There's not much difference between the 2 choices. Just 7mm in ET and a bit of strech
There is a difference from original set up to any of the 2 choices thought
Not so much where the tire patch placed but the metal part of the wheel will now be pushed in twds the car.
Those wheels look nice but I would make sure I got a actual pic of an 8.5 wheel
Something tells me the concavity will be less
Is your question mostly stance or tire selection?
When U were running 245 on 9 wide did u feel the tire was too streched?
Did u want more sidwall for comfort?
I ran 19x 8.5 ET43 on 255 35 on sline sport and always hauled the kids and gear in trunk w no rubbing.

When I put the 255/35/19 x 8.5 with the et38 specs into the "rimsntires" website it says that they will be sticking out 0.6" further than my stock tires. It said the same thing about the 19x9 245 et33 rims I had on the car when it was rubbing. That's why I am a little concerned about going with the 255 and the et38.

I totally see where you're coming from....... I would like to get the 8.5 et38 with a 255 tire but I'm afraid it will be sticking out a bit to far. At least that's what the rim calculator is telling me.

Have you tried rolling your fenders?

To me the wheels poked out past the fender. The tires tucked back in bc of the stretch. Yes u had a finger gap but suspension is needing more travel with the load. I am curious is the fender liner loose in anyway? Also when was the last alignment? Do u have the measurement results? Audi has some negative camber dialed into the rears and maybe this was undone at some point. My previous c6 had just less then 2 and the guy said I was close but still within allowances and this was not a tune shop ..just some conservative old man who had a hunter machine.
I know u like em flush but . I have a feeling they will be flush enough for u.

U r on 20s and he is on 19s but he has a more aggressive offset. His ET33 brings him out aprox 7mm more then your ET40. Plus he's on coils ..prob 10mm lower then u.
Your setup iis so sweet that just a little tweaking can get issues.

Stock is 18x8 et48 with 245/40
I had a set of 19x9 et33 with 245/35 the tires were crap
The new tires will be michelin pilot super sports
I don't care about the extra sidewall for comfort, I just love the look of wider tires and the extra 10mm is great, that's why I'm thinking about the 255.

The fender liner is not loose at all. The fenders are pretty rolled as is. When I put the coil overs in, 3 months ago I got Audi to do an alignment a few day's after when I was getting the recall taken care of (that was a huge mistake, they quoted me $130 but then said it took twice as long and billed me $250). Not happy about that.
Ginn - The pic below from my previous A6 running 19x8.5 ET38 with 245 35 19. The car is lowered with Eibachs. Perfect fit and offset and never rubbed under any conditions.
As for tires, you can go with either the 245 or 255. But if you like the lower profile look and don't mind the rougher ride, the 245s look great and make the wheels look bigger when lowered. Hope that helps. On my current S6, im running 19x8.5 ET32 with 255 35 19.

Ginn's car is quite a bit lower than 07S6's old A6 in the pic above (at least an inch, maybe 1.5").
Ginn, I assume you have already decided on new wheels?
If it were me, I'd go with the 19x8.5 et38 wheels. If you rub with people in the back, raise the coiiovers just a tad...that's the beauty of having coilovers anyway, they're not static.

I think that's what I'm going to go with. I'm not worried about rubbing on the fender liner, I just don't want the fender to rub on the tires like they did on my last wheels.
Thanks guy's I appreciate all your feedback. It wouldn't matter if my local shop had all of these in stock, but I have to get them ordered to a shop in Washington (saving $800) & drive down to have them put on.

This is my car with s-line suspension and 20x9" et35 with tires 255/30/20 Michelin pilot sport. Works good, no rubbing even with a full load of friends in it.

07 3.2, eibach springs, koni fsd, 19x9.5 et45 mtm wheels, with 265/35/19 /Yokohama Adven sports. With 265's it only rubbed slightly on big bumps when my fat buddy was in the back seat. I've since went to 255/35/19 and have never rubbed a single time. 9.5 wide with et45 is an absolute perfect fit on this car, flush with the fender, no spacers needed, just right IMO. For some reason I can't post pics [confused]

Been looking through a multitude of threads about the best offsets and wheel sizes for the C6. Getting it to the bleeding edge of flush is not the goal and there can't be rubbing under any condition.
It seems like ET35-ET40 is a good conservative offset for these cars? I'm trying to pick up some S5 peelers if/when a set turns up locally but what do you all recommend in terms of wheel specs?

I’m pretty sure the peeler fitment for S5’s is ET33, and it’s a 9” wheel. I’ve got S5 rotors and that’s what they are. There is minor rubbing with people in the back seat but I’m also pretty low. It will also depend on what tire size you plan on running though

I’m running 19x8.5 ET48 with 10mm spacers so at ET38. I don’t have any rubbing with a full car. 66762

Thanks guys, I'm trying to find S5 Rotors as those are my favorite wheel... the concavity looks so good. I doubt I'll be lowering this car so I supposed ET33 could work without rubbing and would likely use the same width tire as stock.

Gotcha, you should be good if you aren’t lowering it I would think. Good luck man!

Thanks Bruce, just have to try and find a set. I also really like a few other options like these although I'm not sure if I want to go to 20" wheels:
