To retract the rear brake caliper pistons, I understand we need to open the E-parking brake(EPB) with a VCDS. Then, do we also need a Brake Caliper Piston Tool to push back the piston or will the VCDS completely open the piston?

If the piston tool is required, one post stated that one of the popular $40 piston tool kits does not have a plate that fits the B8 S4 piston face... which I believe has (3) notches in the face.

Sorry, if this is redundant. I've been unsucccessfully searching for an answee piston tool is required, one post stated that one of the popular $40 piston tool kits does not have a plate that fits the B8 S4 piston face... which I believe has (3) notches in the face.

Thanks.

Once the EPB is opened with the VCDS the rear caliper piston can be compressed with a typical piston tool, c-clamp or whatever. The magic threaded tool is not necessary. It will open like the front caliper piston does.

Anyone know how this works with the new(er) versions of VCDS? They changed all the basic settings and I'm trying to solve a problem rather than change pads.

Here is my problem: it sounds like the rear calipers are slightly dragging on the rotors while my foot is off the brakes (driving around town on the gas), guessing this might be due to either how my tech installed them (didn't use VCDS, said he was able to push back piston) and how they weren't "re-adapted", or it's because I drove them so hard the rotors slightly warped. Really hoping the latter isn't the case. Was hoping to try some diagnosis myself with VCDS before taking the car back to the tech, or worse, to the dealership. No soft codes found with a scan. Thanks for the help, I'll probably call Ross Tech and figure out why they haven't updated their documentation with the new software builds of vcds, annoying to say the least.

I'm using both VCDS 12.12.3 and VCDS beta 14.8.

If anyone is changing the rear pads out, can you measure the inside and PM me please? I'm having an issue getting the caliper back on and fitting over the new setup.

I did this over the weekend, I just used Start lining change mode, and then end lining change mode when completed. I know you are supposed to reset the adaptations, but I couldn't seem to get that to work using the force auto adjust option - it said that the option was locked.

Doing my brakes tomorrow and wondering if you used a special Brake Caliper Piston Tool to push back the piston in the rear or, like the OP said, just any old method like you would on the front brakes to retract the piston?

Just compress the piston by hand before taking it off the rotor by pulling and pushing on the loose caliper.
