Bought a Black 2008 S6 about a month ago, 37k miles and an immaculate service history. The problem with immaculate service history cars is you don't always get the color you want, and personally I am dead set on white with black windows, accents and wheels.
As I see it from my research thus far I have 2 options:
1) PlastiDip White Matte with the large pro kit for ~450 and a weekend's worth of time in the spring
2) White Vinyl wrap installed in stages over the course of a few weeks for under 200.
I'm not into paying other people for something I can do myself, and given that I am very technically inclined I see these as my best options for a factory paint protecting finish and the color I want.
Questions on Plastidip:
- Does it actually peel off easily? Given all of the painting I've done in my life I am very skeptical that it will peel off as easily as they say it will.
- Does anyone actually get the finishes as nice as they do on the videos I've watched or is there some variability there? Do I need to set up a paint tent from plastic with positive pressure ventilation?
Likewise, Has anyone worked with vinyl on a C6? any major problem areas I should look out for?
I'm not fully set on either of these ideas yet, so if you have a good argument against either or both, please let me know!
Best,
- Ian

As with any painting project, you want to eliminate airborne contaminants as much as possible. How far you want to go is up to you. Plasti dip is pretty easy to use, though I have not attempted to dip an entire car. Secret is several even coats and take your time.
fonzi@dipyourcar has several videos to include one of a car being hit with a pressure washer with no negative results.
I have no experience with wrapping a car so cannot comment on that.
Good luck and keep us posted in your progress.

I haven't plasti dipped a whole car before but i have done my wheels twice and i think i would wrap before i did plasti dip on the car. plasti dip is a great thing and it does come right off, like i said i've done my wheels twice and taking it off has never been an issue. The black does dull a bit over time though, so i guess with white you wouldn't notice it as much so it might look fine but in my opinion vinyl would hold up better in the long run. Also i would be worried about the white plasti dip staining. I'm not sure if that is true but after seeing the marks that get on my wheels after not washing it for a while i feel like it would stain. It also depends on how clean your car normally is and if you keep it in a garage. Mine is always outside so its dirty quick. I have wrapped all the chrome trim on my car and it seems like a pretty easy process if you've got the time and patience. So good luck with what you decide but i would lean towards wrapping myself. Also, where can you find enough vinyl to wrap the whole car for 200? The sheet i bought was 70 i think and no where near enough for the whole car.

I read somewhere on e90post that the guy got his matte black vinyl for 120 for a 3 series. I actually have to look into buying, but because of a friend I have access to some sources that are unconventional (bulk). I'll definitely post up a price on what I end up getting if it's vinyl. Thanks for the input on the Plastidip, I'm thinking of snagging a scrap car bumper or hood with mostly intact paint to test/practice plasti dipping if I decide to head down that road.

Appreciate the input, I'm gonna do my wheels first and hopefully get a baseline for what dip is like compared to normal sprayed paints. I have all the stuff to turn my bay in the garage into a paint booth so I'm all set in that department. I'll definitely either use this thread or make a work log on the car. First things to come are a Tint job and a Miltek - once the weather is sufficiently warm I'll get going on the other aesthetics.

To me, the vinyl wrap seems like a 2 person job when doing a car. You will need to prep the surface each time, so it would be best to do it in one shot. Same for plastidip.
FWIW I plan to lay a matte clear plastidip over my Quartz this summer. I already have a HVLP sprayer and compressor so that makes it a bit cheaper.
Also keep in mind that plastidip is somewhat repairable while vinyl should be replaced by the panel.

Nice, I definitely look forward to see some pics of that! I probably feel more comfortable with spraying than vinyl application, I have done quite a bit of painting. I've been browsing the forums and I'm tempted to tint, and black out all the trim with vinyl before I make any body color changes. I'm thinking I'll run down this list before I get to my final goal:
1) Tint, Trim and side marker blackout
2) Wheels black or matte black Plastidip (If I get a bonus before I get to this, I'll just get black summer wheels either BBS CH-R or some HRE's)
3) RS6 Grill
4) White Body color of the chosen method...
I'll be using this as a work log, scheduling the tint for later this week, I promise pics [;)]

So looking at that picture it looks like you have both the amber and the LEDs on at the same time. Did you have to do something to make this happen? I get one or the other but not both.

VAG COM mod should get this done. This might help (it's a way to enable DRLs using the various chassis lights)
Enable DRL
[09 – Cent. Elect.] [Coding - 07] -> Long Coding Helper -> Byte 2
Bit 1 = DRL via Front Side markers
Bit 2 = DRL via High Beams
Bit 3 = DRL via Fogs
Bit 4 = DRL via LEDs
Bit 6 = DRL via Side markers
Bit 7 = DRL via Tail lights

Big plans for this weekend!
To-Do:
- DI-NOC (Black) all exterior chrome - Managed to get a 144"x12" roll from metrorestyling.com for $75 plus insane Saturday delivery shipping because I only just realized I had the whole weekend free.
- Repair Rash on all wheels with JB-Weld and some elbow grease
- Plastidip matte black on the repaired wheels.

What a weekend! Plasti-Dipped all 4 wheels matte black and used a painting technique that left a fine, even texture, one of the wheels was repaired with bondo due to some massive wheel rash. I dont have pics of the process, but the standard body filler process was used and it came out great, the wheel looks brand new once dipped.

Used the Di-Noc on the rear chrome and the license plate cover, love the look and I have a ton more Di-noc which I will be playing with in the future. THis is the 421 color Di-Noc, not the high gloss black.
http://i.imgur.com/7QPuj3E.jpg
Bought a ProClip phone mount and at first I felt like it was going to be a regrettable decision but boy was I wrong. This thing is worth every penny of the $65 I spent on it. It looks just about OEM and the connection is rock solid. Secondly the position puts the phone exactly within finger tip reach while driving so there is no shaky hands while reaching for the nav options or to change a song.

Thanks man! the Di-Noc is super clean looking, I definitely recommend it. Make sure youve got a heat gun or hair dryer and 4 hands for the di-noc though, its much stiffer than normal vinyl so it needs more heat.
Next step is Di-Noc Door blades and B-Pillar, gonna do one side first to see if its too much carbon. Also gonna be getting APR tune later this month.

I've only driven back to work from the shop with the tune so far but I can tell you this, its great.
- Throttle response is night and day better
- The engine sounds deeper and stronger, I would assume this has to do with the fuel/air mixture changes.
Further impressions to come, now I definitely need that exhaust though.

Good to hear..have you done the airbox flap delete mod yet to see if that further enhances the tune?

After taking the car out for a drive last night and getting a bit better feel for it, the tune is getting better and better, more because I am getting used to having the increased on demand power when I want it. I kept very good gas mileage logs before in the form of miles per tank (not the computer) so in a few weeks I have a verdict on mileage effect if any.
Today I bought 5% tint to black out my side markers, and a VAG-com cable and 30-pin BT adapter so that I can set up BT audio. This weekend I'm going to try to get around to some more Di-Noc applications and getting quotes on custom exhaust and Miltek exhaust installs.
Good to hear..have you done the airbox flap delete mod yet to see if that further enhances the tune?
I have not done anything to the stock intake as I hear that it doesn't increase power. I'm looking into high flow cats and a custom exhaust. I will be looking into custom air intake solutions once I get in the front end to replace my grille.

I agree, I don't want to Di-noc the trim though, it's too thick of a material so I need to order some black vinyl.
As far as lowering the car, I'm not going to do it unless I do it right and that means saving for the KW or H&R kit. I would rather have the exhaust first.

I feel sorry for all the guys who got conned into a $1900+Install Miltek exhaust. The Miltek only increases the diameter of the piping cat back to 2.5inches from 2.25, so it has super minimal performance gains if any. I've also heard the Miltek in person on an S8 and it truthfully does not sound as good as this. If it was 3 inch piping and DP back it would be worth it, but after much evaluation with the exhaust guys this morning there is no chance to fit 3 inch pipes under my car, there is too much shit in the way from the drive train :(

Before and after video complete! For the interested: the stock exhaust has a small H pipe about 1 inch in diameter, it gets rid of the full on backfire noise but still retains a bit of popping. The Resonators come out to 20 lbs in total. Between the spare tire/wheel and the resonators I have shaved about 80-100 lbs off the car and given that the res are so heavy I'm guessing there's other weight to be saved by poking around some more.

I'm sure it would, the rear resonators are much larger than the front ones, a reputable muffler shop should make it cost effective for you to delete one set at a time with out paying more so start with the rears and if its not quite what you want then get the fronts done too [up]

The Miltek only increases the diameter of the piping cat back to 2.5inches from 2.25, so it has super minimal performance gains if any. I've also heard the Miltek in person on an S8 and it truthfully does not sound as good as this. If it was 3 inch piping and DP back it would be worth it, but after much evaluation with the exhaust guys this morning there is no chance to fit 3 inch pipes under my car, there is too much shit in the way from the drive train :(
Video tonight with idle, rev to 5k, and launch
My shop is quoting me 700 to remove the resonators on my 2010 S6. $258 is a deal. Is 700 too much?

There's more in car noise in that car than there is in mine. I assume that's the effect of the exhaust ending at the cats though. Mine is much angrier sounding because of the higher pitch sounds carrying better through the long 2.25" pipes. With bigger/shorter pipes you would get a deeper note.
Also, looks like those guys don't even own the car, just shop guys joy riding. Sigh.

NICE!! Just comparing stats, a 370Z does a 4.5 second 0-60 and a 13.0 quarter mile.
So in theory, Ian right now is doing a 4.8 0-60, that likely should be enough to get Ian into high 12's with the cat-deletes.. Correct? That would be impressive! Obviously other variables here, but food-for-thought.

Stock s6 can do mid 13 and 104-5+ mph trap ( good conditions) If he does a good 3 inch catback ( x pipe) no cats , better intake , good tune probably he can get 111-3 mph and mid 12 without probs...I would love to see a header and a ported intake manifold... with all the boltones and some weight reduction low 12 and 114-5 mph I do not think are out the question for this car.
How its the ride in the 3.0t? Have to take the opportunity to drive a s6? how you compare this both cars? I really like the 3.0t what some members are doing its nice.. mid 12 and trap almost 110 mph its looks very good on paper ... but what about the susp? brakes?

I am on the lookout currently for a spare intake manifold from a wrecked car (s6 or s8) If I can get one I will employ JHM to modify the intake manifold like they do with the 4.2.

I test drove the C6 S6 when looking for my Audi. Out of the box, the S6 suspension is wayyy better. However I knew I'd be modding like crazy.
With ST coils, a few weight reductions, and sway bars, my 3.0T is better than the S6 stock suspension IMO. No idea what a modded suspension is like on the S6... Probably comparable even though the S6 is about 500lbs heavier. Likely the 'nose' weight is worse on the S6, but that might not be true, the V6 looks pretty heavy itself.. I had already researched the A6 and saw it could be a 12-second car with just a tune, which pretty much summed up my dilemma of 'power, speed, luxury, amenities, AWD & size.'
Also, the S6 with 30,000 miles compared to the price of an A6 with 25,000 miles.. No question it was a better deal!! About $10,000 less.
Funny you mentioned headers, I'm contemplating headers for my A6. The S4 3.0T community has dyno numbers showing almost identical hp numbers on a stage 2 without headers as a stage 1 WITH headers. I'm just not sure if they'll fit the C6, and I really want long-tubes for better gains.
Now an S6 with headers, ported intake mani and x-pipe would be so so sweet. However, I can't IMAGINE the cost of R and D on 10-cylinder headers!!! Ouch!

.
Kenny might have to correct me on this, but as far as I can remember from the S4 3.0T, is de-catted downpipes and full exhaust have ZERO effect on power gains for that engine. (Maybe negligible gains)
Headers have been the only form of exhaust bolt-on that yielded any power for the 3.0T. What I am MOST interested in is seeing the gains with a Stage 2 AND headers. I don't think anyone has done that yet. For me, it'll be one or the other: stage 2 alone or stage 1 with headers. I like that the headers allow for less stress on the motor and the SC, but yield similar gains as a stage 2.

If I installed them perfectly there would be bright red showing at the left and right edges. pretty pissed about it too because i have heard that Lamin-x always will blame the customer for improper install and wont acknowledge that they cut the films too small.

Who has a recommendation for me on how to manage all 4 wheels off my car without a lift? I have enough jack stands but don't really want to do that :\ I'll have to check with a tire place to see if they can help me out.

Best thing to do is to use the jack stands on the lowest level possible. Lower center of gravity will keep it more stable.

+1 on jack stands, just put them under the suspension so when you lower the car down onto the them, it compresses the suspension as if the car was sitting naturally.

I put the shadowline on the rear driver door's trim for about 2 weeks and didn't like the result, so I heated it and peeled it off like you would with any normal vinyl, but something was wrong, the adhesive is STILL on there and I cannot get it off. Heat, goo gone, acetone, alcohol, none of it will remove this adhesive. I talked to a vinyl guy at german car day who wraps whole cars on a daily basis and he said I should never have used the shadowline, that its shit vinyl and their website is a farse.
Now I'm stuck trying to remove this stuff and it will probably take me a few hours this weekend with my fingernails and a hair dryer as that is the only thing that actually gets it off as far as I can tell.
I will be having 3M 1080 vinyl professionally installed and that will actually come off. One thing is for sure, don't ever even consider removing the shadowline once you've put it on.

It's because the vinyl was on there for 2 weeks, maybe 3. It's not a bad batch, but when I get my 1080 put on I can show you guys exactly why its a problem. (the visual difference between the 3m and shadowline on the adhesive side)

So, interesting thing has been happening the past two days, both mornings on the way to work my TPMS freaks out and says there is a flat/low pressure. I check the tires visually and then go on my way because nothing is wrong.
it looks like my right front tire is getting the slightest bit lower, I have yet to check with a gauge but I will today.
IF my tire is indeed losing pressure I have two options:
Either the tire is boned and I need a new tire, or the wheel is fractured and needs to be repaired. I was planning on getting new tires in august, but if I have to get them now then I cant get what I was planning on getting (245/40/19 Mich PS AS3's) because they are not released until July. If the wheel is messed up I will just switch with my spare wheel for the time being.
My question for you guys is what tires are people running that are decent all seasons? I am going to get summer wheels and tires next summer.

Exactly.
It doesn't 'need' them.
The other aspect I LOVE about the DWS is how soft and quiet they are. I have been adding aftermarket wheels on my cars since 1998, and have tried everything from P-Zero's, PS2's, PS2 AS's, Generals, Sumitomo's, Goodyears, (yes i've even tried cheaper compounds lol) Etc etc... I have yet to find a more comfortable, versatile and still-surprisingly 'performance-minded' tire.
When living in the Midwest, I still liked to take my XKR vert or my SC430 out on a cold but not snowy day. A summer compound turns into a hockey puck, (even at mildly cold temps) and other AS's don't do that well either. Only the DWS has had the versatility I've needed. Plus, if it just happened to snow while at work, no worries because of the snow compound built into the tires' tread wall.

So, fun results when I checked the pressure at lunch.
Front Driver: 42 Front Pass: 24
Rear Driver: 42 Rear Pass: 38
Seems as though something funky is going on there given that when I had the oil changed all the tires were the same pressure. Now that each tire is at 42 I can get some real information by tracking the next week or two. When I drove the car home from work it was pulling pretty hard to the right, could definitely feel the difference.

could also be small leak(s) from tire/bead/rim/valve stem
that would also be the least expensive result
i just went thru that
i am a member of sams club n they plug/patched it for free

DWS's are sooooo comfy, but strangely they don't collapse under hard cornering. Glad you like them! And when it snows you will be even more pleased, they are pretty darn close to a dedicated snow tire. Combine a DWS with Quattro, and it's smooth sailing.

It satisfies my every need for driving, so I'm perfectly happy with it. Considering my other option was for a B8 S4 or 5 it is better for me because I have a trailer hitch to tow my boat and when I went camping in acadia for a week last month it held everything I wanted to bring, including the girlfriend.
