View Full Version : How does upgrading to 20 inch wheels affect the ride on the A6?

I have a 2006 A6 S-Line, currently with 18 inch wheels. I'm looking to upgrade to 20 inch wheels. The S-Line is already a more sporty feeling suspension, so I'm worried about the ride getting too hard.

Has anyone had experience with this? Any recommendations on width and tire size?

I was looking at some Vertinis that looked really nice. If anyone knows where to get a good deal on wheels, please let me know. Thanks

Going from 18" to 19", or 19" to 20" you wouldn't notice but a whole 2 inch difference in rubber loss will be noticeable. Everyone's tolerance is different though, so your best bet is to drive/ride in a car with 20"s.

I personally don't mind the ride in my C7 A6 with 20"s, and may even move into a set of 21"s soon.

Thanks for the input. What tire size are you using?

I've seen 20x9s recommended on here, is that what you have too?

I'm running 20" OEM S8's with 30 series tires in the summer. In the winter, I'm running 19" OEM S8 style (identical to 20's in appearance) with a 35 series. There really is no difference in handling.

I've said this many time before, but the 18's are way too small for this platform. I mounted the stock 18" S-lines with winter tires 40 series and put them on the Avant. Those are the worst style wheel for winter as they pack in deep snow. Going from 18" summers to 20" summers, I did notice a little bit of difference in handling.

I run 20x9 with 265/30r20 all season rubber right here in Seattle on an 08 A6 Sline. It is ok. You feel almost every larger imperfection but it does not jar itself into the cabin. Potholes and large cracks MUST be avoided. That being said if you dont want to worry about rough roads stay with a 19" with 255/35. I would say those are perfect for Seattle especially since you can run Continental DWS for under a grand.

I have the 20's left from my Audi if you like the look. They are forged and made by Champion, I can work on the price if you can come pick them up.

I have an 08 S-line with 19" wheels running on 255-35-19 and have no issues with my ride. In fact I have a smoother ride than 17" s on an older 3 series coupe, really harsh ride. Going to 20's shouldn't be a problem.

I went from a C5 running on 16" to my current c6 S-line which is on 19" and was originally worried about ride quality but although you can feel the road a bit more I was quite happy with the compromise between looks and ride.

My opinion changed a bit after using a C7 S line on sports suspension fitted with 18" wheels for 2 weeks, going back to the C6 on s line suspension on 19" the car felt horrible ride wise and very edgy pushing on, I have got used to it again now but I have to admit although the 18" does look far too small on the cars it gives far better handling and ride compared to the bigger wheels IMHO

The bigger wheels look better though [:)]

Good area specific info. The continental DWS would be a good option because I don't drive in enough snow to change my tires in the winter. Would be looking for something all season

2010 A6 3.0 with coil overs,20x8.5 all around,255/30 20s. I love the ride, better than my stock sport suspension and oem 19s. You definitely feel the road, ride much stiffer, takes a little getting use to. Watch out for pot holes, easy to bottom out tire on wheel. Also, I run nitrogen in tires to help prevent the psi fluctuation setting off my tpms.Dont go with run flats, the ride will be much harder!

Thats a lovely looking car!
Thats running the standard 20mm drop factory sports suspension?
Do those tires keep the same rolling radius as the standard wheels you had on previously?
(Sorry for all the questions :) )

Thanks... and no problem on the questions!

Yes, I am at the standard sport height (no mods) and the rolling radius is about 3.8% more than the bone stock 245/40-18, which puts me at -3 mph at 60mph speed test. However, when I used my phone's GPS and my old standalone gps unit the speed matched up with what the car was reading.

No problems here. I have been a firm Conti DWS fan, but these where mounted when I purchased it and I'm throughly impressed. Low road noise with excellent grip, both dry and wet. I would definitely consider these again.

rayray...your car looks great ...do u know the offset of the wheels

also... im not giving u an attitude but .. just asking politely.. how r u going to get more sidewall..im not sure u can .. without changing radius too much ...at least with 20s that is

again great pics n great car

Good to hear. I had the Conti DWS on my 530i and i loved them over the run flats that came stock on the BMW.
I'm looking for straight summer tires and i'll run winter on my stock 18" rims. I've read a lot of positive reviews on the Hankook's but never from a fellow A6 driver. Plus when you can pick a 255/30/20 for under $180 it's hard to say no.

The offset is 40. I have just been playing around with the tire size comparison calculator for a setup that is not over what I am now (about +4%). I know its possible, but I haven't found a combo that works yet. This is just a "if I can" type of thing; its nothing I am dead set on wanting.

A 245/35 actually has a pretty decent sidewall, just about 1/2'' less than the factory 245/40.

To get a larger sidewall dropping down to a 30 series you would need to go wider than would fit (285/30 still has a smaller sidewall)

With a 40 offset, you could probably get away with a 255/35/20, but given that you are only on 9'' wide wheels and 255 is slightly over 10'' wide (variances by tire brands obviously, just pure math) to give it a little more.

I would say you are probably at one of the best sizes for maximizing sidewall on your wheels while still maintaining a normal looking tire size. [up]

275 would fit the rear most likely on all C6s, but in Demandred's case, since he has an RS6 which has larger fenders in the front 275s fit all around. I would be surprised if you could pull off 275s on regular C6 front fenders.

Thanks! I bought the car with the wheels on it already. They are the OEM 20 inch Q7 option wheels. Hartmann made a replica, QS-10s, but they are now discontinued. Here's a link with pics of them on a A8 http://achtuning.com/featured-products/audi-a8-d3-on-20-inch-hartmann-qs-10-wheels/

Ordered my wheels and tires.

20x8.5 +35

255/30/20 Falken Azenis PT-722

My buddy is a tire guy and said these Falkens were the best all season tire, that also reduce road noise, for a decent price.

Crossing my fingers it will look good and the tires are solid. Being shipped now and will have them put on later this week or early next week

I was surprised that the ride quality wasn't comprimised at all after puttting on the 20 inch wheels. I'm also running 255/30... I think that is the best option on this car while also providing awesome ride quality.

They all look amazing. Hardly anyone has 20s on an A6 here in the UK. I'm about to get a set myself but I'm not 100% on the size.

Will a 9x20 in 48 offset fit my 2011 A6 (C6) s-line without any rubbing issues on a full car?

What tyre size best for it? 245/35 or 255/30? I dont want it to rub and decent rim protection.

I'm new to Audi, just bought a 2010 A6 S-line and am in the market for some summer rims, I have stock 18's with winters on them from the dealer. I looked in my area and someone would have 20x8.5 and 20x10 staggered. The rubber already on them is 225/35 and 255/30. Offset is et45.
What are my chance of any rubbing on tight turns or just being so wide in the back?

The rotational circumference front to rear is -0.7% and well within spec. Offset isnt going to be a concern if you are not going to lower the car. Fronts will always be fine regardles; backs may may rub.

I have 20" rims arriving soon (3 weeks) and new suspension, can't wait, this thread just makes me more impatient. I'm going from 18" rims, I'll post my opinion on the difference in ride comfort, I'm guessing it will be pretty noticeable, but don't really care that much, it's gonna look so much better.

I don't know how so many people say they rub with 245's on a 20x9 with like an ET40-45? Gotta be a wrong offset. Im on 255's on a 9.5 ET 45. No rubbing at all. Weird.

Here are 285's. I've driven this many times. No rubbing at all. But it's not super low.

Now it's looks like that with RS6 C7 wheel :)

I also have a 2010 a6 3.0 with sport package. I've been riding the 18s since I got it but want to move up to 20". Audi only recommends 18 or 19" wheels, so do you think the ride quality is that drastically different? Also what kind of tires do you have/recommend?

I just bought a 2017 A6 with 19" wheels and now looking at the 20" wheels from the RS7. Hopefully there shouldn't be a problem with the ride feel and handling.. what do you think?

I have a 2006 A6 S-Line, currently with 18 inch wheels. I'm looking to upgrade to 20 inch wheels. The S-Line is already a more sporty feeling suspension, so I'm worried about the ride getting too hard.

Has anyone had experience with this? Any recommendations on width and tire size?

I was looking at some Vertinis that looked really nice. If anyone knows where to get a good deal on wheels, please let me know. Thanks

The ride is different but not bad. The rear hugs corners like never before in dynamic mode while the front eats the road for dinner... Any questions?226089226090226091226092226093226094
