So I think I should introduce my car, considering how many things I've asked and how helpful you guys are, I'd be happy to share her with you!
To start off, my name is Liam, I live in Adelaide Australia (Euro scene is starting to get bigger, spotting B5s here and there) and would not have another year of audi to be honest, I think the shape of the B5 is just perfect. Holds its age so well!
So here is my car, Prefracelift 1998 A4 B5, 2.4L V6 30 Valve Which is the little brother to the american 2.8. Not looking to mod this engine, just keep it going :)
Here's how it sat when I first got it in around 2012
http://i50.tinypic.com/2enuv4m.jpg
And as of the 28th of october 2014
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/audi-3_zpsb2d9a769.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/ljwegener/media/audi-3_zpsb2d9a769.jpg.html)
Pretty sure the color is Ming Blue Pearl. Its an Automatic 5 speed tiptronic autotragic gearbox which has required a few rebuilds in its life, motor has been rebuilt 20,000 km's ago (12500 miles for you guys) and the chasis has done roughly 210,000 km's or 135000 miles :p its been around the block a few times and stayed in the family (mum was the first owner) but since its been mine its had all fluids changed and i watch how it runs carefully [wrench]

Just managed to remove the rear spoiler, I didn't like how it looked and the paint was faded on it so a couple of well hidden bolts later and it was free, not getting the 4 holes fixed along with a dent and botched de-badging resprayed and the boot will be good. Paint is a little old, roof has seen better days but i hand wash it every friday religiously, its like therapy after a working week. spent 7 hours detailing it with a DA polisher the other night which improved certain areas but I need heavier pads to eat some oxidation and marring.
Inside is always clean, JVC headunit with Jl audio 4' in the front doors and 6" in the back shelf, a kicker amp and a pioneer competition 12" sub, needles to say this car is loud on the inside but sounds amazing at any volume. Had to replace fuel pump which died and still need to fix my abs unit..
Not sure where to go with it, hate how high it is and the suspension is shot so im going to get some ST's for it and try the slammed life, should be a learning expirience, and possible looking at some steel wheels (white would go well i think), and possible some ecode's with HID's as i need to see the variety of animals which decide to sit in the middle of the road here... I know its done alot of miles and its a fwd auto so not that desireable but it still handles its daily 120km/h hills run around where i live quite well if you ask me :p
Thanks for always answering my questions guys, without this forum and this aweosme community of B5 lovers, I would have already spent too much fixing this car and learning about this awesome model.

Hey, everyone has to start somewhere! Good luck with the build, and keep it clean. I see to many of these cars go to bits because people don't care for them like they should. It seems like you did a little homework and you know what direction you want it to go.
If I remember correctly, the reason you don't see the 2.4 here is because this forum is comprised of mostly Americans and that engine wasn't an option choice for us.
Btw, is that a Holden ute and a e28 5 series I spy in the back ground? Nice cars/truck things

Thanks for that, didnt think of that, seems like there is no support for my engine though from what i've seen :p
You got the first one, and the second is a BMW E30 323i, my brothers daily, thing is slammed and goes hard for such an old car and you missed the hidden nissan 370z behind that, rocket ship.

Damn! I was so close. In all honesty the old BMWs are where it's at. The new ones look like puke.
Back on topic. I'm sure you could eek a few extra ponies, and some responsiveness out the car if your handy with a welder, or the computer mouse. Apart from custom tuning and fabrication there dosent seem to be much you can do for this car engine wise. Although I might check if some of the 2.8 stuff can roll over to the 2.4 since as far as I can tell they are the same engine with a different bore/stroke.

I agree 100%, old shape is dope, and they sound meaty, mum has a 2003 E46, that thing goes but i like the look of the old ones for sure. What were you thinking with a welder? and as for mouse are you talking a remap? would love to try but i would have no idea what im doing lol. As for 2.8 things, they do look pretty much the same, that being said, could i single turbo the 2.4 like some 2.8's?
2.8 mods apply to 2.4 in 99% of cases! Even the heads are the same I believe. Cams might be more aggressive as the Euro guys use these over 2.8 ones for S4/RS4 builds. Don't know for sure

I didn't think people were using the 2.8s for STK's. I'm pretty sure they are using 2.7t's that are stroked/bored as those were set up for turbo(s) in the first place. Even if you can turbo, I think the priority if your looking to go big power would be a manual/Quattro conversion.
On the side of the welder i was thinking custom headers/downpipes/exhaust the works. That would help the engine breath the better. As would a remap if you knew what you were doing.

thanks for the information guys, very helpful. An S4 is the dream however In Australia there are laws regarding young drivers driving turbo/performance cars, the 1.8T is fine however the 2.7T would not be so a 2.4/2.8 is a good compromise. As for conversions, I would love, and i mean love to convert it to a manual, and as for quattro, how easy would that be? just thinking of cost, for each conversion i could probably justify spending around $1000 however much beyond that it might be pointless because of its usage. Im looking to get a cat-back exhaust custom made and possible a tune. I feel this engine is capable of putting out a little more power than stock. Any suggestions for upgrades or modifications that i should look into in the future?
Quattro is not easy. You need to modify chassis and make room for a rear diff/subframe assembly from a quattro vehicle.
Better off buying S4 when you're on your fulls

2,4 V6 30V is common here too. It replaced the 2,6 V6 12V, which made 150 hp.
The early 2,4 V6 30V made 165 hp. Later ones (in facelift cars only, circa '99>) were uprated to 170 hp.
Tuning mods for early and late 2,8 V6 30V (DBW and DBC) apply to the 2,4 V6 30V. In the UK, the 2,4 was not available in the B5 quattro, all were FWD. The C5 A6 however had the 2,4 V6 30V in both FWD and quattro.
165 hp 2,4 V6 30V were ME5, 170 hp ME7. The 2,4 carried over to the B6 A4 relatively unchanged. It was also fitted to the C6 A6, but was a different engine. It gained an an aluminium block, and different cylinder heads, with both intake and exhaust camshafts driven by the timing belt.
In short, the 2,4 V6 now became the smaller-capacity version of the 3,0 V6 30V that was first fitted to the B6 A4, and later the C5 A6. So traditional 3,0 tuning methods now applied.

Unless there's a wrecked B5 B5 quattro free, and you're good at slicing, dicing and welding, I wouldn't bother with a quattro conversion. A lot of work, even the ABS system is different between FWD and quattro. If it were a B6, yeah. All bolt-on, but a B5....

I always just assumed you got a flathead screw driver and popped it out... I'll check around.
Edit: from what I can tell it seems to be riveted in to the actual door fraim so you would have to take out the door cards etc. it would be to much of a hassle for anyone to do it. You'd be better off masking off the sorrounding paint and using plasti-dip. https://www.dipyourcar.com/ good luck!

It went to the paint shop this morning to re do the boot and fix a slight "blemish" on the front right corner which you can sort of see in the first picture, thinking of getting a DA polisher to see how i can pull the paint back, anyone have any experience with them? Still looking at rims, thinking some 18 with stretched tires for more dish capability but i need more infor on what i can pull off. pictures will be up at the end of the week when i get her back :D

It really is one step at a time with these cars. You'll get there it just takes forever and costs a lot of money.
How much is shipping on wheels from America? Because you could prolly find some alright rims in the classifieds with that budget.
Have you considered china? It might be a little cheaper for the wheels and the shipping. I know there's a stigma surrounding things made in china, but if you look hard and find the right manufacturer you can actually get a very good product.

Contemplating getting the paint professionally corrected by a company the re-spray guy recommended to see what needs fixing.. worth the $350? as for wheels, the tarmacs i think where like $400 for shipping... ill look around, thinking about 18's with a bit of poke and stretch, just have to find the right ones.. thanks man

Think its time I updated this more regularly than i have..
Just finished finding an elusive coolant leak somewhere under my intake manifold this last week, finding it was easy, taking everything apart and putting it back sucked ass. Those vacuum lines were a pita without diagrams and stupid me didn't take pictures before hand so I stumbled my way through, finding massive leaks after starting the motor again but I fixed them and it runs coolant leak free!
Now the nitty gritty part with pics to keep you entertained.
Decided to take a valve cover off to check for carnage from such and old and abused motor but to me it looks relatively good

What a freaking mess.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/28/utajare7.jpg
So turns out the leak was 2 old hoses running from the main coolant supply to the throttle body and back again, my thought being that it was intended to warm the throttle body and air on cold days buy since I live in a hot climate I went for a bypass

Solution

Just finished up installing the new D2S depo projectors into my 1998 pre-facelift whip. With the hand of a mate it went alright, lots of fender trimming, little wiring and a bit of pushing and shoving and it was done in a little over 2 hours.
The Process:
Started off taking the headlights out to mark up the fenders for cutting, masked it off using painters tape so it came off easier, leaving only the section i wanted to cut un covered. Drilling a succession of holes seemed to be better than cutting through so much

http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140325_185432_zpsuepixz1q.jpg
Then used a grinder wheel and smoothed the edges

Total amount i removed:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140325_190917_zpsjzi4lwfr.jpg
Repeated this for the other side also, did a bit of a better job after having practice, then touched both up with some touch up paint i have lying around in the correct paint code.
installed them roughly for fitment, little bit of a gap but ill have another fiddle later, it didn't go perfectly, but what does..

might i say how good this car looks without a bumper too :D
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140325_192657_zpsrlooyrrr.jpg
anyway, repeated this process, grinding more as it rubbed a little in areas, on each side till they were in

overall the fitment is pretty decent considering i did this with just the help of a mate, both of us with minimal body work experience, defs something anyone can tackle if you can handle cutting into your nice paint [=(]
apologies for pic whoring lol

Well the seller sent me a set of H7s, not D2S.... so being the "i got it ill use it" guy i am, i took to the light bases with scissors to get them to fit the projectors
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140326_102747_zpscbxeaylj.jpg
To this
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140326_103010_zpsutisonbk.jpg
Then got to wiring, only needing to cut the feed wires from the D-plug and putting on some spade terminals to connect to my new kit.http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140326_103530_zpsnywe2lr9.jpg
And installed!
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140326_105237_zpszsdxed14.jpg
so, overall, easy to install, easy to take out and replace and cheap and effective! Only thing is one ballast makes a highpitched whine and isnt as bright as the other even when i swap the bulbs over. Seller is sending another ballast over asap!
The verticle adjuster is also popped out of its socket on that side too [headbang] so that will need to be glued in place!
down_n_dapper
06-25-2014, 01:33 AM
so a good 3 months later, I finally got finished fixing a broken adjuster in my depo projectors, not the prettiest fix but it works finally and ill be able to adjust them up to the right height hopefully!
So heres the issue, Basically the cup and ball socket isn't tight enough, meaning the adjuster simply pulls out of the socket when it reaches a distance of great stress. This left me with lights aimed around 3-4 foot too low and reduced to no visibility in low light areas without the use of highbeams.. dodgy.
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/image_zpsbd54087a.jpg
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/image_1_zps982af767.jpg
And after using some glue and letting it set, heres what it looks like:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/IMG_20140625_141354_zps40a63d7a.jpg
All properly seated and permanently fixed like it was meant to be from the factory!
So hopefully I'll be able to properly adjust my headlights for the first time now!
Also Going to have to find a way to seal that hole as well as the ballast hole in the bottom of each headlight assembly so they're weather sealed
Not braking hard enough :)
But be careful, the master cylinder on these cars use the same bore for the the 2 circuits (50:50 bias), whereas 99% other cars are 1 large, 1 small for a front/rear split.
Although the rear brake piston, pad swept area is smaller than the front. thus the front should have higher brake torque, everyone I have known says the rears lock up easily. It is very hard to get the rears to unlock under hard braking especially in wet conditions. Ask me how I know, I slid 30M on a 45 degree angle on a slight downhill, granted my tyres were eol.
Repair is cheap, you should pm rockersteady on here, he organised a repair for me. He is local to us (Aussie).

No worries! thanks for the headsup! Had a few instances of losing traction in the wet, being a front wheel drive that also meant i lost power and control and it scared me shitless. Safe to say i respect the wet a little more these days and know my limits for corner speeds wet and dry!
I'll hit up rockersteady and see what we can do about my abs, can't hurt to have another safety feature working with me to keep my car on the road!

Just received New headlight pigtails from a fellow audizine member for nothing, Unfortunately, these plugs are from a later model golf, using 10 pins instead of the facelift lights which use 8. As such the pins didnt really line up with the holes in the pigtails so i had to get creative.
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140627_130527_zpscyujrtfh.jpg
This shows the difference in pin numbers between the depo lights and the pigtails
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140627_133747_zpsabm8bisn.jpg
Got to work cutting the depo connectors so the pigtails would slide in properly, I wouldn't recommend doing this for a permanent solution, but I wasn't interested in paying $70 for the piggies from ECS or going on the hunt for a pick and pull deal.
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140627_133753_zps4rbafac4.jpg
After that I simply used wiring diagrams for the connectors, soldered the wires together, heat-shrunk each wire and finished up connecting them and testing! should be much easier than my previous solution which was pretty shitty: http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Headlight%20Install/IMG_20140327_234737_zps85tte1bo.jpg

Here is the before and after of the coolant tank replacement. Old one managed to get pretty hot when i was having heat issues and as you can see it bubbled quite nicely and melted internally a little bit, glad i got to replacing this before it failed completely. Second tank in less than 3 years!http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Snub%20Install%20and%20coolant%20tank/20140630_203435_zpscoic8bsj.jpg
Then I got to starting on the snub mount.. shit. I probably over complicated it, but ended up removing my entire front bumper, made a giant mess with coolant after i lowered the rad thinking it was empty, big mistake. Ended up getting everything buttoned up, yet to go for a test drive but I'm excited to feel if its any more solid on acceleration and shifting.
Also had to shift the mounting of my Electric fan, used some big ass zip ties through the radiator, not sure if you guys would approve but I'm sure it makes no difference having some holes in it.
All in all I'm done, only 5 of so swears, back is killing me, scrubbed my hands raw cleaning them again and the garage is filthy, ill be cleaning for an hour tomorrow smh. mission accomplished!

Can I ask how much ECS charged you for shipping to Australia? I'm also in Australia and have found ECS shipping prices to be enormous!

Actually $60 ain't too bad! Some of the parts I've quoted on the ECS website have been over $100 for a single item.

guess it depends on the size and weight of the items, i know if i wanted to get coil overs from them before i bought mine, shipping was around 300, shipping for the facelift lights was around the same so smaller things are alright, larger bulky items are where they get you!

I did try to order some screws once, and the screws were a couple of dollars and the shipping was like $30-$40...
Either way I think ECS shipping is exorbitant!

Yeah its a real shame, i generally tend to use Ebay for smaller parts and ECS for a reserve given the shipping. If all else fails i ask my mechanic to source parts for me from audi for as good a price as he can! good luck finding parts cheap! We have to pay to play unfortunately

Alright this update is going to be picture heavy so prepare your bandwidth!
Just did battle with the kraken, decided 4 winters of no heat was more than enough and it was time to tackle the dreaded heater core that everyone bitches about. $200 later for the correct core for my Right hand drive model and I was ready to tackle this pain in the ass job.
Followed this (http://audi-diy.blogspot.com.au/2007/10/audi-a4-b5-heater-core-swap.html) DIY/guide for most of this and went off on my own tangent towards the end, minor details differed for me but it was a fantastic resource!
Started by removing the battery and then the pollen filter cover and cracking the bolt on the refrigerant lines, since my compressor is leaking terribly I assumed I wouldn't have any left in the system, Wrong. It started hissing and pissing out fluorescent gunk everywhere. great. I tightened the bolt again only to have it continue to slowly leak so as I was now stuck with that lovely chemical spilling out, I left it to drain in open air for a bit.
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_165824_zps3xcyqsax.jpg
Then I begun removing the lower trim from the dash, realising how many times I'd done this before, leaving countless bolts out and setting them aside. Made this part quite easy!
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_170515_zpsavgkjdw5.jpghttp://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_171134_zps1r9oofzu.jpg
Then the center console came out along with the trim surrounding the head unit and HVAC controls
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_173228_zpsomugvopb.jpg
Then the brackets connecting the Passenger side air bag and controller were removed
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_175551_zpszro3niir.jpg
And the center section pulled apart and moved to the side to access other bolts
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_181303_zps8nwfxczs.jpg
The next bit to go was the steering wheel followed by removing the bolts holding the steering collum and all the surrounding trim, including the cluster
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_182826_zpsfqryphgf.jpg
The parts stack grows
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_191116_zpsevxuqfrw.jpg
So now we're here, lower trim removed, steering wheel removed, centre console removed, pretty much half the dash removed and in pieces
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_192247_zpsvshifn3k.jpg
On the dash apparently is a sunlight sensor for what I don't know, but there is a little trim piece covering that and a single philips head screw attaching it to the dash and a small connector to unplug before the dash can be removed eventually
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_192649_zpsvu8klcie.jpg
A few bolts later and the whole damn dash was ready to come out without a fight, impressive, I do like how these cars are designed at this point, but that quickly changes lol
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_194045_zps2qxftdgd.jpg
While the dash was out I decided to wrap the wood trim in red carbon fibre vinyl to match the rest of the trim that I've just done, came out pretty well!
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_194109_zpsp8xvenar.jpghttp://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_205253_zpswnwlzmoi.jpg
and the brand new valeo core to go in the car!
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_205306_zpstf0cr4og.jpg
Next thing to come out was the dash core support, after a few hidden screws, some swearing, prying and praying it came out; effort and a half.
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_214945_zpsagetfa8s.jpg
And heres the whole box out as far as I wanted to take it for wires sake with the new core installed already, decided to call it quits tonight and try again with more patience, back and leg strength and will power.
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Heater%20Core%20Shit/IMG_20140721_215727_zpssilmrjqx.jpg
I'll update the rest of the reinstallation procedure tomorrow, hoping my bolt bagging and labelling is successful in making it easy to put back together but I guess we'll see how the kraken is feeling tomorrow, might decide to be a pain in the ass as usual lol

Finished up the core swap this morning, not too hard to get back together simply doing the reverse of the removal process, only have 2 screws leftover which isn't bad considering how many I pulled out..

anyway, The heater core swap wasn't quite as difficult as I first imagined when all the shops i asked about declined the job but that doesnt make it a cake walk..
Would I do it again? probably not. Did I enjoy it? maybe the first and last 10 minutes.
I think there is actually more meaning in this for me considering I managed all this myself and you can't tell i pulled the dash at all, the more I pull the more I learn and the less inclined I am to sell this thing for nostalgia alone
Nice work, I cbf doing mine and just looped the connections at the heater core lol. Probably when I take the centre console out I'll do it then... ultra lazy.

So in the last month Ive been pulled over and chatted about my poking rear fitment, the decision was made to get the rears pulled and they look rather yum now, although some spacers may be needed, still deciding how to make it look a little more fitted

And in the works is a Glowshift Elite 10 oil pressure gauge which im hoping to retrofit into the dash in place of the analogue clock.
In other news my cluster trip computer keeps resetting itself and im getting really fed up with it, thinking its time to swap to a newer cluster with an LCD.

Been busy with life and Uni lately so the car has taken a back seat. Haven't done too much in the mean time, just keeping it running!
- Fitted A Glowshift Elite 10 oil pressure gauge so I could tell when I crack my oil pan next time if happens. Followed Metal mans footsteps and Installed it in the analogue clock location for concealment
- Replaced Oil and Filter with some fresh 10w30 just because I can
- Pulled the abs module to get resoldered, abs light persits so I'll be scanning and replacing a sensor next I believe
- Rotated Wheels on the fronts and noticed a slight dent, pulled the tires and replaced with my winter beaters till I get it fixed
- Applied some tint to my headlights to give them a more stealth look against my darker paint, Detriment of light output is negligible
- Pulled spark plugs to inspect, cleaned and replaced, gaping was still normal, not enough wear to need replacing
- Replaced Trunk lights LED's so I can see more of what I'm loading in
Burnt spot on my lense face

Looking good man, I don't know how I missed your thread before. You're doing a lot of good work, keep it up buddy!
If you ever need small stuff like those facelift headlight plugs let me know, I'm going to they junkyards pretty often and don't mind getting parts for you and throwing them in a small padded envelope. We might be able to work out some deal on parts from ECS if you'd like as well. I may be able to get them shipped for cheaper than ECS will charge.
If you need help with the cluster swap let me know as it's something I've done before, I actually have an early style cluster and arm with wiring harness for sale if you're interested. I don't have a sport steering wheel for your car now, but it's something I could get for sure.
I see your oil pressure gauge resets and does the dumbass opening sequence after starting the car, presumably because you have it hooked up to the 75x post. If you hook up the power to terminal 15 (I believe, will have to double check) it should still work as a switched ignition source but won't kill the power during cranking.
(I hate the glow shift opening and closing light sequences, I wish we could deactivate them.)

Thanks for your kind words mate! appreciate it!
I do still want a set of the facelift plugs for a better fit if you have any, just shoot me a pm!
(also on the look out for a prefacelift centre console cupholder, handbrake cover and centre console lid in grey :) )
Are you in contact with ECS or would you just post them to me yourself at a lesser cost since its private? Because I would really appreciate that! Always wanting ECS things but the cost is usually as much as the item itself :\
Unfortunately I've discovered that European model B5's such as mine have an immobilizer component in the cluster so any cluster I swap in would also need this, not sure yours would..
If you ever have a wheel that turns up let me know! See if we can get a deal going
I'll have to look into that! it asks for constant and switched power for the gauge. Do you have a diagram of this no. 15 post so i know what I'm looking for? Definitely want to address that! had enough of it cycling twice
Cheers again!

I'll keep an eye out for the plugs next time I go. Which cup holder are you referring to? The one that sits in the rear of the center console or the two little dinky ones that flip up? You interested in a black leather facelift e-brake handle and cover? I have that sitting on my shelf right now. Center console lids are always broken or in terrible condition when I do see them, and I've never seen one in grey.
Are you in contact with ECS or would you just post them to me yourself at a lesser cost since its private? Because I would really appreciate that! Always wanting ECS things but the cost is usually as much as the item itself :\
Not in contact with ECS, just may be cheaper for me to ship them to you via USPS. We'd have to do some calculating beforehand, but it may be cheaper. It's usually $10-20 to get items shipped to CA from ECS. I can't remember exactly how much it cost when I shipped a throttle body to Australia before, but I think it was like $25-30. Took about two weeks to get there though.
Unfortunately I've discovered that European model B5's such as mine have an immobilizer component in the cluster so any cluster I swap in would also need this, not sure yours would..
Ah yes that's right, I've heard that you could switch to an immobilizer-less ECU to use a standard cluster, but since you have a 2.4 I'm not sure if an ECU without an immobilizer even exists for your car since that motor was not offered in North America. What's the ECU part number?
If you ever have a wheel that turns up let me know! See if we can get a deal going
If you get a chance, could you measure the size of the splines on your wheel? I'm pretty sure you need the facelift wheel, but it would be wise to double-check. I've got a prefacelift 96-97 wheel for sale, but I don't think it will fit your car.
I'll have to look into that! it asks for constant and switched power for the gauge. Do you have a diagram of this no. 15 post so i know what I'm looking for? Definitely want to address that! had enough of it cycling twice
The terminal block I'm referring to is located beneath the knee bolster under the dash.
Terminal 30 is constant 12v.
Terminal 15 is switched 12v.
75x is the switched load reduction relay. Anything connected to 75x will have its power cut while the motor is being cranked. That's why your gauge resets after the engine starts instead of firing up the first time you switch the ignition on. All you have to do is move your switched power source from 75x to 15, problem solved.
Cheers again!
Cheers!

I've yet to see one of the dinky flip up cup holders intact at the junkyard, but I'll keep an eye out. Might be something you'd have to buy new. I can't find a part number now but I'll look later, and I'm sure it would cost more than $20.
The handbrake cover is a direct swap. I'm running a black leather facelift handle cover in my 97 right now and wouldn't have it any other way. It's a great upgrade compared to the shitty plastic handle.

I always disconnect the battery when working with the airbags. It's an easy precaution to take and they can really mess you up if it were to go off accidentally. I take my precautions a step further and make sure I'm not sitting in the seat when I unplug the airbag, I do it while kneeling outside the car.

So its been a fair while since I even lurked around audizine let alone my post anything.. Uni work got hella busy around exam time since i actually had to focus on it for once lol and so did life and work and I guess the constant forum browsing took a backseat for productivity [=(]
Haven't done a whole lot since I last posted:
- Waxed and washed a few times
- Battery died many a time (must be a phantom drain somewhere)
- Ran over a screw at work and it ended up through the sidewall (there goes $200 for nothing)
- Ended up with a new set of 4 Achillies ATR sports 2's ( quite noisy but bucket loads of grip)
- Retrofitted a set of TRS mini H1's into my high beams since conventional methods didn't work (projector didn't fit through the rear of the light assembled like most people... [headbang] )
- Spent hours trying to get the cutoff shields in the projectors to flip back up (ended up wiring in a light to offer resistance which fixed it, ghetto lol)
and just yesterday found someone 5 mins from me with a 2001 wreck and scored a sports wheel with airbag for $100 (like $75 USD) and might go back and pick up his cluster with lcd and associated controls. He also had a battery cover which is ultra hard to find for a RHD!

Nice man. Glad to see you back around. I've also been super busy with work, barely any time to do anything to my car.
I might have a spare steering wheel emblem laying around. I also still have those headlight plugs and leather e-brake handle we talked about awhile ago.
thanks buddy [up] good to be back! At the end of the day they keep us getting from A to B but its still fun to wrench when I have a spare minute!
Happy to pay a bit for the emblem if you can be bothered looking for it!
as for the plugs, I've installed a control harness for the headlights which pull power from the battery directly and send it to the ballasts so don't really need oem plugs anymore lol and the e-brake handle I had to leave for now for monies sakes sorry!

eurpaparts.com has the steering whhels badges but they're kinda pricey imo.
check eBay too.
yeah no kidding.. 67 dollars for a badge, no thanks!
Also while I'm at it I'm thinking of sanding back the wheel and restoring the black finish a bit since its faded, should turn out pretty good!
In contact with a dude over getting the cluster with an lcd but really iffy about swapping since its a lot of wiring from mine to the newer one.. I know you've done it base drifter and probably metal man too, tips?

Well I've been a little motivated since I started posting again so I got to some much needed cleaning, and I mean MUCH needed lol
Started by taking the front seats out and vacuuming the whole interior and the seats, then I got to work with a little wet vac we use for dog "accidents" on the carpets lol
It actually pulled a bucket load of dirt and grime from the carpets and my seat:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/IMG_20150412_144150_zpsywlkif6t.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/ljwegener/media/Olivia/IMG_20150412_144150_zpsywlkif6t.jpg.html)
Checkout the black stank water that came out of the seat and carpet lol

Also decided to fix my brothers front lip on his E30 with some JDM skills, also painted it black again just because I could, much much better
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/IMG_20150412_151234_zps6zwpo919.jpg
And also responded to a vehicle accident with my local volunteer fire service (common in australia where there aren't enough forestation's in ruralish areas). 2 dudes going to work at about 10am, driver drunk as from the night before, floated over a crest (estimated speed was 130km/h or 80mph) ended up hitting an embankment, rolling twice and flying into a whole buch of trees before finally rolling back upright, driver had minor head lacerations and possible spinal damage but passenger walked out to get help! Don't drink and drive

So I don't know about you guys, but I regularly roam wreckers listings, Craigslist and eBay for parts at around 2am in the morning and in my searching I managed to find a 2000 parts car which I'm regularly pillaging for updated parts compared to my own!
Managed to get some parts for cheaps yesterday:
Scored new wiper controls with dis buttons and clock spring for $90 (little too much) which I've just installed and are all working (aside from crusie) and all the wiring for the cluster and steering wheel controls as well!
New engine bay cover for $30 (still trying to get it to fit properly) any ideas where its meant to sit? does it tuck under the second firewall rubber seal?
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/13/9bdf171fbd0c3cc0c9a53feedc41434c.jpg
And my proudest steal, got him down from $150 to $50 for a 2000 A4 DIS cluster, not sure how good the display will be but for 50 you can't go wrong!
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/04/13/4e8aa916ccb66fc7b0458c030489a33e.jpg
Very hard to find one with immo (we got euro A4's) and in good condition!
And with the help of Madcow, Audifirst and Bhusted I'll be installing it shortly!

So been trying to get back into the modding more regularly and looking at different projects to tackle. Still on the hunt for a reasonably priced 1.8TQM which is pretty hard to find here in Aus sadly! Till then I'll keep practicing on this old thing!
Moved my oil gauge onto the dash and out of the cluster, install wasn't that clean to start with and it was starting to bug me, plus my battery dies alot and I'd have to pull the cluster and reset the needle to zero every week. So all in all it performs better in its intended form rather than my hack job, lesson learnt, leave it alone lol
Made some progress on the cluster swap! Talking to Bhusted (amazing help) I went ahead and made some adaptor harnesses
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Cluster%20Mod/IMG_20150419_174127_zpsdedpo8lh.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/ljwegener/media/Olivia/Cluster%20Mod/IMG_20150419_174127_zpsdedpo8lh.jpg.html)
And heres what we have so far without an immobiliser coding or cluster adaptation
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/IMG_20150416_212851_zps77yx0o1d.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/ljwegener/media/Olivia/IMG_20150416_212851_zps77yx0o1d.jpg.html)
Everythings working for the most part but without Vag-Tacho which is still in the mail, can't start the car and test anything else. Still have a random headlight indicator light issues, it's on all the time for whatever reason.. still trying to workout whats going on. That and the needles and backlighting stays on the entire time the cluster is plugged in. Could be the screen not being plugged in or just coding issues. Oh and I found that the screen has been botched. Po tried to replace but ended up putting it in and cutting the wiring for it.. turd. So I'll try and get it working with my car then explore fixing it up (already talked to Kompresed)
Cruise control is not working still, thought it might have been an issue with the switches on the stalk but since I replaced those and checked the wiring its not in there I don't think! Also tried resoldering the capacitors in a DIY I read but still nothing! I've tested the diaphragm and it holds pressure correctly, still have the module to test and the pump
Annnnnd I decided against my wallets advice to get my exhaust looked at since I'm sick of such a muffled car that no one can hear! So I took a drive down to a local shop and talked to the owner about it, he'd done the whole thing to a few of our model and got started by cutting off the rear muffler which made it loud enough for me for now!
Here's the result

been a bit since i updated but some things have happened!
Recently bought a 1.8T parts car with facelift goodies so quite a few will be swapped over to the Ming 2.4L!
First thing on the list was the facelift bumper. Made a deal with a local crash repair owner I'm good friends with and after preping and sanding the bumper, he charger me all of $100 to paint it.
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Fog%20light%20install/IMG_20150711_090203_zpsctzkfk2b.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/ljwegener/media/Olivia/Fog%20light%20install/IMG_20150711_090203_zpsctzkfk2b.jpg.html)
I also took the time to touch up my valence with some black
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Fog%20light%20install/IMG_20150716_203107_zpsmyqxw5dj.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/ljwegener/media/Olivia/Fog%20light%20install/IMG_20150716_203107_zpsmyqxw5dj.jpg.html)
and here it is installed! Still thinking i'll restore the foglights following this diy Fog Restoration Link (http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/143993-diy-fog-light-sanding-refinishing-pics.html) and swap the bulbs for some 3000k HID's
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/Fog%20light%20install/IMG_20150717_162904_zpslmcbkqsa.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/ljwegener/media/Olivia/Fog%20light%20install/IMG_20150717_162904_zpslmcbkqsa.jpg.html)
It would have been great to know the mounting styles are COMPLETELY different between facelift and pre facelift euro models, had to custom mount the facelift bumper brackets to my pannels however it lines up well. Only issue is the valence doesnt seem to wrap around the bumper 100%, its about 20mm short each side.. not sure what to do about that but oh well!
Also swapped over some LEDS in the cluster and made a write up for it ( check DIY section) and sanded the needles to rid them of the red tinge

Also with GREAT help from mr walky_talky himself I was able to make sense of the foglight swap from pre-facelift to facelift. Had difficulties as the module is the 8D0 907 701A with different wiring and controls compared to the US version. Walky was kind enough to draw me up a custom wiring diagram which you can see below. Full credit goes to walky for all his hard work:

so here was my progress as of tonight, labelled each wires destination so wiring it up should be a cinch:

The securing points are much the same as doors, just washers securing the trim to the dash, wouldnt be too hard to remove from the dash if you remove the glovebox, maybe centre console and drivers lower trim [up]

haha glad to see you now know the thread behind the face!
Thanks man! it was a giant pita.. burnt my fingers alot heating it to stretch it, i sussed a few diys on the B6 forum, there are quite a few floating about, basically just need to measure the vinyl roughly to the trim piece, allow a good 2 finger widths extra and cut it out, then go alot heating and stretching it over the edges, heating gets rid of any bubbles and marks and keep working it till its good. Corners take a bit to get right but heating and stretching over works well. My one tip is to get 3M high quality stuff, as the vinyl i got was not genuine and after heating it didnt glue as well to the back of the trim, so i used some tape for good measure [up]
let me know if you need any more info :)

This reminds me this thread deserves a bit of an update.
Car has been treating me well as I treat her well, no issues to complain about [drive]
My dad has requested the upper garage be for cars instead of my workshop. ( our house is on a large block of land in the hills, theres a 2 car garage next to the house and a 6-8 car garage with a high ceiling about 30 seconds down the hill a bit)
So this has led me to start making plans of turning the bottom garage into my workshop/storage area. Only problem being its full of things from our old house after moving 10 years ago that have never been sorted through, its due for a big clean up!
Plans so far are to build a sizeable and sturdy bench with vice, have a large tool wall for storage, install various presses and grinders and build some large shelving for spare B5 parts. Hopefully one day there will be some $$ for a hoist as well.
First purchase was a garage find, $100 bench drill press from 1974 that ive started restoring. Pulled it all apart, sanded, cleared old grease, ripped out old switch and electrics and painted it back up.
Heres what it looked like:

Maaaaajor update time, since i've just been posting alot of single question threads, figured its time to consolidate it all to my main build thread :)
So with my auto box presenting "shifter Flare" (diagnosed by the one and only Walky T), I was face with either getting it serviced for $250, getting a second hand unit for who knows how much, or sourcing manual parts. Being the intelligent dude I am, I figured now was time for my coveted manual swap.
Basically started debating whether or not it was worth continuing with this car or getting a manual 1.8T which i'd love but money is a neccesity where I'm heading in life. Finishing up my degree in 2 years, hoping to have enough saved for a decent looking rock for my girlfriend around the same time, so new car is out of the question for another couple years, hence my old faithful ming B5 has to keep kicking for atleast 4 years or so I hope!
So I found a parts car, its a 1996 1.8 non turbo FWD manual, 180k km on the clock, oil in coolant, didnt bother diagnosing since its a really undesirable motor and will probably be scrap. Started tearing into the parts car and pulled motor and trans in an afternoon:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/manual%20swap/pre%20swap/DSC_0160_zpsf6zuwls3.jpg
And gave the trans a clean up and a lick of paint and it turned out looking brand new! Tested its shifting capabilities before tearing it out, and every gear engaged really well, so I'm positive about its health for now.
Ended up making a weighted shift knob myself at work on a lathe from a spare pin of a bobcat, cold rolled steel never looked so good! Here it is weighed:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/manual%20swap/pre%20swap/received_10205275288146443_zpsxkxjrkcq.jpeg
And Gearbox and shifter assembly cleaned, painted and assembled:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/manual%20swap/pre%20swap/DSC_0158_zpsqmvpfkyu.jpg
Then the order from ECS came, ended up picking up quite a bit, including single mass fly wheel and clutch from valeo, valve cover gaskets, sump gasket, 80 degree thermostat, random seals, rear main seal gasket and assorted hardware:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/manual%20swap/pre%20swap/DSC_0151_zpsdsko4bmx.jpg
Heres the flywheel/clutch ill be running:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/manual%20swap/pre%20swap/DSC_0152_zpsfg5m21qh.jpg
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/manual%20swap/pre%20swap/DSC_0155_zpsughqqvui.jpg
And i assume this flywheel already has the required spigot bearing installed?
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/manual%20swap/pre%20swap/DSC_0157_zps7mkleynh.jpg
And also assuming these are the correct flywheel bolts, although I seem to remember bolts on a fair few of others cars being standard 6 point bolts which were rather large, bit iffy on these:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Olivia/manual%20swap/pre%20swap/DSC_0154_zpsdtr2jme6.jpg
But thats where it all sits at the moment! still need to order new rear main seal, get some grease from driveshafts, get trans drain plug tool, replace fluid in trans, remove parts car subframe, help future brother in law install hoist in his house, and then the swap can begin, hopefully on the 8th of december all things going well!
thanks for reading!

Nice update, sir!
If those bolts came with the Valeo kit, then you are good to go. You would not be able to use a regular hex bolt due to the sunken/recessed/"frenched in" (if you will) bolt holes. You would not have any clearance for the socket to access the bolt, so an allen drive (or similar) is a necessity. OEM usually uses Triple Square/Spline/XZN in this application, but allen should work fine as long as you have a good tool. Make certain your tool is inserted all the way. It has just occurred to me that's probably "what she said".
Do make sure that you follow the torque specs that come with the Valeo kit. Do NOT follow OEM torque specs as you are not using an OEM flywheel or hardware here.

Thanks bordom and walky!
Understood about flywheel bolts (you're a damn quick at replying btw [up]) was just concerned I wouldn't be able to torque them the same but I'll be sure to get a new hex bit to do them up with!
Sadly how the flywheel was packed, it was quite loose in the box and the instructions with torque specs are unreadable.. So I'll have to hit up Valeo for those

Waged war on the pedal assembly today, so many swear words. Ended up dropping the entire steering collumn of the parts car, pulling the wheel off the spline and tossing that in the backseat, and got the pedals out over the steering shaft which was now hanging. My main concern about the swap has now shifted to the following question:
How the heck do i get the pedals back in without dropping the steering column?!
anyways, clutch master cylinder and lines all look good, and I think i understand all the plumbing involved so should be okay on that front [up]
96 manual subframe is coming out tomorrow, wish me luck [headbang]

There are a few guides on here about the pedals. I don't think I did anything with the column. I definitely didn't remove the steering wheel. I did have to mess about with the stupid master cylinder. I think the pedals were the hardest part of the entire thing. But at least you get to use the pedals all the time. It's not like adding a weird horn or nitrous or something that you only get to use 'sometimes'.
Somebody got away with just swapping the brake pedal and adding the clutch pedal bits - without swapping the entire pedal cluster. I believe that was the guy that bought a FWD B5 Passat parts car to 5MT swap his B6.

I might go the route of using my cars accelerator and swapping brake and clutch pedals, the accelerator pedal of the manual car has seen better days, cover has snapped off! Never added something to my car that isn't totally necessary, oil pressure gauge, thermo fan, foglights, needed them all [up]

I apologize if my suggestions have cost you extra time or moneys. <Checks other thread> Oh wait...my suggestion was to use a readily available, Australia-friendly Toyota rear main seal that is a direct fit replacement - for cheap cheap.

Absolutely. I'm sorry you were met with shame and ridicule in an attempt to procure parts for your Audi. I have been there as well.
First, lets take a quick look at the size of the required seal. Exhibit A:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Audi-Volkswagen-Rear-Engine-Crankshaft-Seal-85-x-105-x-12mm-Elring-342-093-/231570908604
85 (ID) x 105 (OD) x 12mm (Width)
Now lets see the seal size for a super popular Toyota model. Say...a '92 Camry with 2.2 Liter 5S-FE engine.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crankshaft-Crank-Oil-Seal-Rear-Vw-Toyota-OS354-/311325515583?hash=item487c725f3f:g:HMIAAOSwDNdVoRa M
Also 85 x 105mm
"But Mr. Walky", you say, "I'm not taking these ebay auctions as gospel. I mean...that's just ebay. And I'm an Australian." Okay then. Exhibit B:
The Audi Seal:
http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/ah276/walky_talky22/Audi-Crank-Seal-1_zpseev8qkyj.png
We can see the size is 85x105x11 or 12. The width is not critical, obviously.
Le Camry Seal:
http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/ah276/walky_talky22/Audi-Crank-Seal-2_zps4v74aqse.png
Size is 85x105x10. Perfect fit.
Exhibit C:
In college, I drove a 1986 Toyota Celica GT with a 2S-E engine (a grandfather of the legendary 5S-FE, you might say). It had an entire 97HP. Whilst performing some regular maintenance (rings, rod bearings, valves cut - the usual) we noticed it was in dire need of a rear main seal. Being a Saturday, and needing to drive back to college the next day, ordering a seal was not going to work. Luckily, my father is both a Toyota Master technician, as well as a VW/Audi specialist. "You just use a VW seal on that" he tells me. "A what? Really?" I say. "Oh yeah. I keep these VW seals in stock. They are the same size, so I use them on the Toyota's too." So for the next 6 years and 100k miles, that 86 Toyota lived with a VW Rear main seal. Pic of said '86 Celica GT:

Interestingly, it is rocking some very nice looking 14" VW Golf alloy wheels in that photo. They are also a matching size. This car was all about the VW interchange parts. ;)

Yes, a 2ZZ-GE (Celica GT-S / Pontiac Vibe GT / Corolla XRS) seal should work great.
Actually, I just looked that one up on RockAuto and one of the parts (DNJ brand RM916 Seal) had this application info listed:
AUDI 100 (1992 - 1994)
AUDI 90 (1993 - 1995)
AUDI A4 (1996 - 2001)
AUDI A6 (1995 - 2004)
AUDI ALLROAD (2001 - 2005)
AUDI CABRIOLET (1994 - 1998)
AUDI S4 (2000 - 2002)
PONTIAC VIBE (2003 - 2006)
TOYOTA CELICA (2000 - 2005)
TOYOTA COROLLA (2005 - 2006)
TOYOTA MATRIX (2003 - 2006)
VOLKSWAGEN CORRADO (1992 - 1994)
VOLKSWAGEN EUROVAN (1997 - 2003)
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF (1995 - 2002)
VOLKSWAGEN JETTA (1994 - 2004)

100x? That's a bit generous, eh? < There I go again!
Please don't blindly trust what I say. I would feel really bad if somebody did something or bought something on my advice and I was wrong and it didn't work. I can be wrong. I AM wrong a lot of the time. You are very smart to ask for details and some kind of proof before putting cash on a decision like that.
While I'm at it, I should say that I don't replace rear main seals every day. I am not a mechanic. I did replace the one on my celica with a Jetta seal. That was kind of a long time ago. I have not bought a 2ZZ seal and put it in an Audi V6. I've never done that. The data I have says it's the same size. The experience I have should correlate to that working, but I've not done that exact thing before. There might be some "gotcha" that I don't know about. What I can say is this: If I were in your place (ie: in Australia), after I was done surfing or petting kangaroos or whatever, I would source a Toyota seal and try that before I would ever pay $200 whatever dollars Audi wanted for it.
Best of Luck!

I was breaking the law (just a tiny bit), and they were pretty nice about it. They were all like "You can't do that" and "USA is that way". It had to do with lack of a permit. I wasn't, like, stealing or anything. (other than the "eh's" of course. I just cant get enough of those!)

No, it won't.
The left hand downpipe on V6 / V8 engines is routed ABOVE the left hand mount, between the mount and transmission tunnel. Even with the left hand gearbox bracket removed, the 4 cylinder subframe welded-on bracket is EXACTLY where the downpipe wants to be.

So upon Nolly graciously informing me my plan of using the manual 1.8 subframe would not work, I had to source a V6 passenger side manual trans bracket. never thought it would be so hard to get one part!
local dealership wanted $90 for one from germany, not bad at all, but 3 week shipping time wasn't for me.
Found a place online that promised 8-10 day delivery which would have been great just great! I made the order, $120 shipped, and left it for a week until I checked the orders status, after a week it was still "on order". I attempted to call the buisness twice on one afternoon but was met with an answering machine service at 1pm on a thursday, not good enough. upon angrily emailing the customer service rep, I was informed that "the truck from vw in germany was involved in an accident on the autobahn, and my part was destroyed". That must have been some damn accident. The customer service rep then listed back to me how long i called for and at what times and made the excuse that all staff were away on training and unable to assist and that I was being too demanding. I was outraged with his response to me, having worked as a secretary and dealing with customers daily, this was NO excuse and was not how you converse with a customer, no matter what. Upon emailing him back asking what the new time frame of the order was, and giving him a semi-serve about his customer service skills, I was emailed back the following:
"Dear Liam,
The order had been cancelled and the money refunded, you're right, we dont deserve your buisness, have a good day."
Are you kidding, not only was he incredibly rude to me, he cancelled my order without my expressed permission, what a spanner.
So I rang around 10 wreckers all across Australia (its actually quite a big island, for those that don't know [;)] ) and found one at a wrecked a few thousand km's over, and had it overnighted for $70, so happy!

Also went to parts stores today and picked up some Autolite Spark plugs, pn #APP3923, and will gap to 1mm as per specs, an oil filter and fresh 5W-30, Some grease which i think can be used for CV's as its basicaly heavy duty bearing grease, and a 6mm and 8mm impact hex drive bit for the flywheel and pressure plate bolts.
http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/12/16/e4c50bdd523509ea08d84444aa0a9764.jpg
Also helped my future brother-in-law epoxy a section of his massive 5 car garage, 2 thick coats and it looks so good. Then we installed his early christmas present to himself, a 4 tonne 2 post hoist, my B5 was the first to test the hoist and this is where the swap will commence! saddest part is my girlfriends family live 50 minutes from me, but if worst comes to worst i'll sleep in my car on the hoist till this swap is done.

well the swap did indeed start last monday, and progress was pretty strong, We started a timelapse which i'll upload when the build is done :)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/b7c0a0f2cf6c5dc537de6baff1656262.jpg
thoroughly enjoyed removing the auto trans from the motor, what a heavy lump of power sucking, over complicated, cumbersome, hard shifting junk! Was quite happy to shift that on a pallet and shove it behind my brother in laws shed ;)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/337eb8db4400a957e937c063434acdf8.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/ebd61af567a4530ddec56c0ff1449a2e.jpg
Nervously installed a new rear main seal and replaced the gasket and flange, wasn't entirely sure that the seal would be 100%, but it seemed to go on square and true, So it should be fine! Then came time to remove the stupid crank shaft bushing which usually supports the torque converted, was quite tough to get out, but my brother in law used a screw driver and a mallet and wedged it out
When I went to install the flywheel, the center bore as found to be too small for the crank, and I also believed the bolt holes to be incorrect as well.. after getting quite angry, I sourced another flywheel and clutch in Australia for $1950 and got it ordered. Before I picked up the new flywheel, I took my assumed to be incorrect 2.8 flywheel to a machinist and asked a few questions, he measured the centre bore as being 0.2mm too small compared to the auto flywheel, however the flywheel bolt holes were correct!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/c79726664b9dd019b8e47b36cccaa7a4.jpg
Turns out the 8 bolts aren't exactly evenly spaced, one set has a slightly larger spacing to the rest, meaning the flywheel can only bolt up one orientation! So after an hour and a half of setting the flywheel in a cnc lathe flat, the machinist took 0.2mm out of the centre bore and refused payment (he knows my uncle quite well, that and I was LOVING being in such a big shed full of engineering tools).
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/625c1f629c3bbd9e303fb6157bb64d2f.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/30026ba0fba09428b35d25d333071272.jpg
lined up the flywheel with my foot, and thumped it over the centre bore with a rubber mallet and it fit like a finger in a bum! Torqued to 45nm + 1/4 turn and installed clutch disk and pressure plate as well, I tell you what that 45nm + 1/4 turn is a hell of a lot of torque, used a tyre lever in the ring gear teeth to stop it all turning
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/f84a74f8a38be83964bd13c923a92196.jpg
Replaced both valve cover gaskets and spark plugs, replaced sump gasket, cleaned out the oil pan and oil pick up screen (was surprisingly clear) and cleaned up some more oil leak remnants from years past
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/1e4e766a806d8b3f6fbe537d1136154e.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/c797e4320fb06b788776066a3bcd91fd.jpg
Also noticed how ludicrously restrictive the stock manifolds are.. Considering getting custom headers made, but that's be quite pricey
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/8a776d970e94f35ad449e67d0175e6e7.jpg
then came time to align the manual trans and bolt it up, since the auto trans uses a few different bolt holes, a few bolts through the bell housing didn't seem to align with holes in the block, but only 2 on either side didn't fit so I wasn't concerned. Ended up getting a longer bolt for the started motor lower mount, no idea why none of the original bolts were long enough but no matter!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151229/4a602e43f105805fff62ede150d0b4cd.jpg
And painted carriers and callipers yellow!

Started work today by removing the brake master cylinder, which is a job and a half, access is pretty tight but with some rotating and hard pulls i managed to get it all free. Also took the time to vacuum all the leaves and rubbish which sits under the raintray and master cylinder, quite satisfying when its all clean [up]
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151231/4206a352ca9ffc2f1d7468db3459d789.jpg
Then came time to install the clutch hard line and the clutch master cylinder return lines, both equally as annoying to plumb up and get seated correctly, especially in 40 degree heat (104 F) in a tin shed, sitting inside a black car with no windows open.. I was getting pretty frustrated lol
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151231/6120d78aae7d034ff215ccd00fa8335b.jpg
and removing the auto pedals to swap manual pedals in was an equally huge task, the list of things to remove was so enormous, I ended up with just the steering arm from the U-joint and everything else on the floor
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151231/cffaa513603b9df50533a0e305c29590.jpg
swapped over my auto accelerator pedal as it wasnt broken and got the manual pedals installed which is satisfying to look at, one of the last major hurtles was installing these!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151231/6337c5af64973469b8bd5c4df680813c.jpg
And heres a mid installation pic showing just how much was removed, literally the entire steering assembly was gone..
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20151231/bad21375b131ef8ae2ee26581329aafb.jpg
This does leave me with a question though, what do I do with the steering lock linkage that once connected to the auto shifter mechanism and ends in the key barrel?

I still really enjoy looking at the engine and trans out of my car but im more than ready for them to go back in! Installed master cylinder and properly mounted the new pedals, and replaced all the interior trim and steering controls, whilst removing the bowden cable (thanks to nolly for the name) which went from the auto shifter to the ignition barrel, still not 100% sure what it did, but its no longer needed!

The Bowden cable is linked to a lever in the lock cylinder, the other end is linked to the auto / tip shifter.
It's purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position and the key withdrawn, if the shift lever is in any position other than PARK.

A quick tip, Dapper:
If you ever need to pull the motor again, for whatever reason, it's quicker and easier to open the ECU compartment (4 screws), unplug the engine harness connectors (4 in your case), unclip the conduit from the false firewall (3 clips), undo the M8 earth nut on the passenger's side, and let the harness come out with the engine.
Quicker than unplugging every connector on the engine, some of which are not easy to access when it comes to disengaging the connector tabs without breaking them.

Ah the shifter lock thing makes alot more sense now! And thank for for the tip, I tossed up which would be easiest, could have gone either way, and I chose to unplug everything, which might not have been the smartest [rolleyes].
Whilst you're reading my thread, what do I need to do about crank position sensor? I assume it was integrated with the auto trans?

Crank sensor simply bolts into the hole in your 012. I believe SOME tip / auto crank sensors are longer, so I would get a manual one.
It's also worth noting, some early 01A's have the crank sensor hole, but lack the threaded hole for the retaining bolt. Simply drill and tap, if this is the case with yours. The machined flat area is the same as drilled ones on later 01A / 012.

Thanks again nolly! Thats exactly what I ended up doing, had to drill and Tap the hole, and checked the sensor to see if it contacted the flywheel.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160105/0b92e128ea28dadc25d22243c10f490a.jpg
Then plugged in every sensor and coolant line, going to have to wait for a oil cooler to coolant hardline molded line, as my diy replacement may contact the compressor pulley.
Went to start and it didn't do a thing, which is when I realised I had to pull the neutral safety relay, and jump 2 terminals with an oem terminal jumper from my manual parts car. Upon doing that it roared to life!
It idles high (1100 rpm) as the accelerator cable is too short for some reason and I'm having issues bleeding the whole brake and clutch system as I changed the brake master cylinder as well so that's dry, would a pressure bleeder work best for this?

Congrats! I bet you heart dropped a bit when nothing happened though lol. Glad it was an easy fix.
I havne't done my B5, but I remember having real issues bleeding the hydraulic clutch in my old chevy pickup. What ended up working took a lot of fluid. I just opened up the bleed valve a crack, enough for fluid and air to escape. Put a drip pan under it and keep topping up the reservoir. Eventually all the air will pass through. Eventually...
I may be way off on the B5 process though, as I said, I haven't done mine yet.
Hope you get it fixed soon and are flying through the gears soon.

You've got no idea, I was like what, after all this it just won't start? But it was an easy fix!
We just managed to bleed the clutch master and slave pretty easily, but with a dry brake master cylinder, the brakes are proving to be quite difficult. We're leaving the nearest bleed screw open on one of the calipers for an extended amount of time and seeing if that can't get fluid into the lines, or else might crack the master cylinder brake lines and see if I can't get fluid out through there.
After bleeding the clutch, we raised the car on the hoist and ran through the gears, and that felt awesome, to have all 5 gears and reverse engage nicely, and my clutch and flywheel work well, happy days!

Getting a mobile mechanic to come suss the brake master cylinder today, we couldn't workout how to bleed the damn thing yesterday. Did manage to bleed the clutch though and drove it around a back street and it was great! No clunking i can hear, every gear engaged well and it revs a little bit quicker than it did with the auto tranny.

Thanks mate! I'll keep trying to impress you [wrench]
On another note, got the car running well again today!
Had a mobile mechanic come look at the brakes, he believed the master cylinder from the manual parts car was faulty, as i squirted all the fluid out of it for storage, i could have stuffed up the piston. He advised me that for him to work on it, it would be $150 + $130 an hour after that. I was pretty worried at this stage, but he informed me how to bench bleed the original master cylinder and offered to leave without working at no charge to me, legend!
So 30 mins later I had replaced the master cylinder (crazy how fast things go when you understand exactly how it all bolts together) and then bled and flushed the brakes, bled the clutch for a second time, and the pedal was SOLID, barely touching it stops the car completely, very satisfying.
So then the car was ready to go! took it for its maiden voyage on the open road and it outlived my expectations! I was still babying it on the gear changes but after the clutch clamped i gave it a bit in second and I do believe it revs faster than an automatic!
My one issue is I have no speedometer.. the needle wont move! The ECU has been coded manual, the TCU is still plugged in inside the cabin, and no other modules have been touched coding wise. Is there something im missing? does the cluster require coding? I double checked the VSS sensors connection in the car, and I know it was working in the parts car before i removed the trans!

There really is noting like driving a standard. You feel way more connected to the car. And I'm sure it does rev faster than the auto did, no pesky torque converter.
So now that this major milestone is complete (except for speedo) What's Next?

Dapper, it looks like there's a VSS break somewhere.
First of all, you need to pull codes from the powertrain. If the ECU is missing a VSS signal, it will limit output, and maximum rpm to 5200. I doubt you've driven the car hard enough to find out - yet.
If there are no VSS codes in the ECU, then there's a break between the cluster and the distance sender in your transmission. If all the connections are fine, I would be looking at a broken magnetic ring in your 1.8 gearbox.
I noticed somewhere you mentioned you've left your TCU connected. May I ask why?
walky_talky20
01-07-2016, 11:29 AM
I would unplug the TCU. You don't need that guy anymore. ;)
Shouldn't bother the VSS, though. The VSS goes pretty much directly from the sensor to the cluster, I think. I guess I would try to check the signal coming out of the sensor to see what it looks like. Scope would show you, but I think it might be able to flash an LED test light. I'm actually not certain of the signal type. I'd have look it up.
Maybe something quick to try would be to swap the VSS from your auto trans. I do believe the sensor are the same. Maybe while you have it out, you can plug it in and then wave it next to a magnet or something and see if it will register on the dash.

Congratulations Dapper!
There really is noting like driving a standard. You feel way more connected to the car. And I'm sure it does rev faster than the auto did, no pesky torque converter.
So now that this major milestone is complete (except for speedo) What's Next?
Thanks mate! There really isn't, most satisfying thing ever to have that much control over everything! Next is a detail and polish, maybe widen the rear fitment a tad, maybe get the wheels refinished, maybe interior swap/reupholstry, im running out of projects!
Supercharger ;)
Dream on speed racer ;)
Dapper, it looks like there's a VSS break somewhere.
First of all, you need to pull codes from the powertrain. If the ECU is missing a VSS signal, it will limit output, and maximum rpm to 5200. I doubt you've driven the car hard enough to find out - yet.
If there are no VSS codes in the ECU, then there's a break between the cluster and the distance sender in your transmission. If all the connections are fine, I would be looking at a broken magnetic ring in your 1.8 gearbox.
I noticed somewhere you mentioned you've left your TCU connected. May I ask why?
I would unplug the TCU. You don't need that guy anymore. ;)
Shouldn't bother the VSS, though. The VSS goes pretty much directly from the sensor to the cluster, I think. I guess I would try to check the signal coming out of the sensor to see what it looks like. Scope would show you, but I think it might be able to flash an LED test light. I'm actually not certain of the signal type. I'd have look it up.

Thank you two for checking this thread! I ended up doing a cluster test and the needle moved normally so it wasn't the motor, then proceeded to test the speed sensor in the measuring blocks of the cluster and it was showing 0 with the car in gear on the hoist, so the sensor it was. I took the auto VSS out and plugged it in, got a helper to read the cluster as i waved a magnet in front of the sensor and it moved! So I removed the manual trans's VSS and swapped in the Auto one, identical part number, and what do you know, I can see how fast I go!
Thanks for the help and ideas, and special thanks to k0mpressed, who found me on fb, and offered to teamviewer my VCDS session to diagnose it for me!
The TCU is still plugged in as I couldn't find it, i searched the passenger side (left side to avoid confusion) but it must be on the driver side (right side) floor under the carpet, since the ECU is coded manual, I don't feel its pressing to unplug, but i'll get there!
Only thing now is a metallic noise like a wonky pulley at around 800rpm, but it disappears after that.. Im thinking the compressor bearing is on its way out, and my pressure cleaning of the engine wouldn't have helped.

After driving the car for around 100km (63 miles) It still drives well, which is a credit to how everything went back together. The flywheel/clutch setup is a bit noisier than I expected, but having researched, apparently its quite common for solid mass flywheels to be noisy. I've only every driven dual mass cars, so I'l just accept that. The metallic vibrating/rattling noise at lower rpm's is still present and I still have no clue what it could be.. It concerns me a little, may take it to my mechanic for him to check over everything.
That leaves me with the snub cage, its much too large for my ECS uprated snub mount. There is a ridiculous amount of space between the snub and the cage, mostly above it (meaning the motor can shift up quite easily) which leaves me with some terrible jerkyness on acceleration as the motor shifts up.
Heres a 1.8 Snub in cage for reference, however my snub looks identical, the cage is almost identical. The image is purely to show the amount of room and where mine is adjusted to. I have tried to adjust the cage but am at the lowest setting on the bracket and it still is nowhere near touching the top of the snub in the cage.
http://zeroproof.com/bicball/snubfit.jpg
So do I make my own snub bracket? If I were to remove teh stock one, markout the holes, and measure up the snub diameter, leave 3mm gap all around and weld a bit of pipe to a flat plate with correct holes, this would probably solve my issue no?
The idea would be to replicated the 034 bracket as follows:

Do it. It's easy enough to DIY and you don't have to pay millions for shipping. I might just do that next time the front end is off. (Hopefully never haha)

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160117/659e11a5088e9277000d1d515e5327df.jpg
Ran out of time to finish it after work, ended up making the stock cage holes longer and it adjusted better!
And put the old girl into service position again today, fixed a minor coolant leak from a loose clamp, discovered my upper oil pan Is leaking, and discovered I've cracked my compressor mount
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160117/14cf45857376c1740f980d6a9cc63e57.jpg
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160117/f25e077a9b968105dba3bbd5bb11edef.jpg
And discovered the faint rattling is a combination of different pulleys rattling.. Namely the compressor pulley, it rattles quite badly, not sure but thinking the magnetic clutch is dead as I get no cool air with aircon on atm. So looks like i have some bearings to replace! And a new compressor mount bracket to source.

Wow its been forever since I updated this.
So the issue with the compressor was indeed the clutch, being off centred by the broken mount, it was no longer engaging and making a bad noise, so sourced a second hand replacement for $150 with a new bracket and bolts, got it fitted in about an hour (front end comes off in 10 mins with the proper tools), got it regassed and its been fine ever since [up]
a little over 3 months later the car developed a slight hesitation under load, but it wasn't really noticeable so I kept driving it as normal, thought it was just a rare hiccup for an old car. Well it got progressively worse and Diagnosed it as a worn coil pack, where the plastic housing was degrading and spark was jumping. Sussed replacements, coilpack $300, ignition leads $150, decided to sit on it for a while as it was still the occasional missfire at that stage.
Then a car popped up, 2000 Ebony Black Pearl Avant 2.4L 30V APS V6 (updated version of my motor, I believe my current AGA block is like that AHA, and the APS is like the ATQ, just 2.4 vs 2.8L), dead auto trans, 176,000 km (109k miles) with full service history and timing service at 160k. Heard it run well, just needed some coolant hoses replaced allegedly, but it was only $600 so I jumped on the chance to own a wagon, as Australia didn't get many.
anyway here it is:

Pretty decent condition overall, few scrapes here and there, needs a repainted front bumper which ill sort and a few scratches detailed. interior is clean, thinking about swapping to some bucket seats in due time. The plan for this car is to convert to manual again, since the auto trans is dead. Having done it once before, I'm not too daunted by the process, as its fairly straight forward after parts are sourced. The initial plan was to dig into my current sedan to feed this project, stealing all the manual goodies and killing my faithful car, but sentiment got the best of me.
I ended up finding a DHU coded V6 fwd 01A interstate, for $650 delivered it was the best deal i could find. I called the shop, was a Golf GTI performance place, guy said they had a complete converison kit from a B5 3 years ago and he'd send me whatever they had for $750, so i said done.
I've got this pallet being delivered to my work this week:
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Avant%20Build/13835590_10154350899743894_746161497_o_zpsaaalxwpq .jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/ljwegener/media/Avant%20Build/13835590_10154350899743894_746161497_o_zpsaaalxwpq .jpg.html)
So from what i see, theres the trans, flywheel, shifter, pedals, shifter linkage and thats about it. So i still require manual driveshafts, flywheel bolts, pressure plate and clutch, but its still better than attacking my car!
Got to work removing its heart to suss the trans and work on the motor easily

separated motor and trans, trans and torque converter leaked no fluid, makes me think a leak was the reason the trans died

Aside from that there was alot of oil in the coolant system, yet none in the oil system, which makes me hope its the oil cooler, its seal was pretty old and crispy. Anyone want to chime in?
So i'll need to clean the motor, replace coolant lines, clean the coolant system, replace oil cooler, replace heater core and should run well.
And back to the Ming Sedan, I found a guy on A4 B5 FB site claiming he makes coil pack conversion harnesses with packs included for $260 USD, so I might go down that road to fix all the ignition issues for less than the sum of the original parts

Shipment came from interstate, so I now have a DHU 2.4/2.8 01A [up] as well as what looks like a solid flywheel, pedals, shifter, slave and master cylinder and one trans mount. But it was meant to come with both trans mounts and the clutch lines, so i'll have to chase them up. does anyone know the correct clutch line for this year 2000 setup? the connectors on the slave and master look like a clip in type.

Got the trans all cleaned and painted oem fresh, love putting clean parts back in, totally not needed, but worth it for my own satisfaction. Also took the shifter box apart and cleaned and regreassed everything, and painted the shifter box and shifter linkages. Might pickup the shifter bushing kit from JHM at some stage before reinstalling everything.

Also cleaned up the flywheel, upon further inspection its a LUK OEM replacement DMF, which loooks to have so little wear on it, Can barely feel any markings on the surface after a rub with 180 grit. The trans and flywheel came from a car with 100,000 km on it (62k miles), but must have had a clutch/flywheel replacement at some stage from what I can tell, must've been fairly recently before it was wrecked, win for me

Started tearing into the motor a bit more, there is significant oil in coolant issues, I'm still crossing my fingers it was just the oil cooler seal, but this murky mixture is just everywhere coolant is meant to be.. I also need to get that damn auto bushing out of the crank at some stage, really dreading that, was a massive PITA last time we tried, might try getting a perfectly fitting metal drift made up and get it out hydraulically
http://i1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/ljwegener/Avant%20Build/Engine%20Cleanup/IMG_20160727_092916_zpsyhwwlyop.jpg (http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/ljwegener/media/Avant%20Build/Engine%20Cleanup/IMG_20160727_092916_zpsyhwwlyop.jpg.html)
Decided to do something I didn't do when converting last time, pull the upper oil pan as well! As i noticed this car had a decent amount of oily mess around the bottom of the block, I figured while its apart it would be wise to replace the upper oil pan gasket, for the money, totally worth it. The internals look remarkably clean, checked cylinder walls which all looked fresh af

and the oil pump chain and tensioner pad both look good still, as well as the oil pickup is clear of anything!

So I just need to start putting together a parts list, and workout where to get things from for a decent cost. Still annoyed I live here, when ECS offers free shipping to US now [headbang] oh wells
