my Facebook has been littered by subaru guys posting pics of their newly installed "blast pipes" wtf are these? from the looks of it they seem to be long exhaust tips that serve no purpose whatsoever. they remind me of my old air cooled vw days having a stinger on the ol beetle. someone please educate me.

Pretty sure it's just tips/pipe that replaces the rear muffler... I'm not JDM though so I wouldn't know

Blast pipes are mainly used in the drift scene and on 240's
They mean straight pipes. Oversized and stuuuuppiiidd loud.

Subaru guys have a really easy to flash opensource ecu, this has an easy to install and flash anti-lag/launch control/no lift shift program, this means a lot of flames out the exhaust. People have taken to adapting the "Bōsōzoku" exhaust style (insane japanese fad, google it) in order to keep from melting their bumpers. This puts the flame about 5-6 inches away from the bumper, and no melted bumper :)

plus on some cars it can look kind of cool/mean.

...I would've thought it was another term for a dump pipe.

I did a rear muffler delete with a single piece of 3.5" pipe, and its angled a little bit (not as extreme as the wrx above)...

before it was cool...

i dont think the S4's bumper is all that allowing for a upswept tip. but it wont be long till some one hacks the tips off a SS autochrome exhaust and welds 45's

funny thing is i was planning on doing this a couple years back on my s4. i was looking for the right pipes to do. instead of straight piping though i wanted them to flare out. I didnt realize its a trend now, Glad i decided not to do it.

blast pipes have been around for a while now, the "stance" and drift scene is largely responsible for bringing more into the mainstream. and i personally think that a set of pipes like the ones on that wrx or s14 look better than the 4 inch tip rice can.

lol! i knew it had something to do with the "stance" scene. we need a scene that actually promotes performance and useful mods [:p]

I actually like "mild" "blast pipes"(like the ones shown in on the wrx above). I remember seeing them on some subarus a few years ago and I thought they looked nice, or atleast better than the fart cannon everyone normally runs on a subby.
They sort of remind me of the exhaust tips on old school bimmers
