I Plastidipped them black then painted gold over them so would be easier to take off down the road. They get dirty quick though. Going back to black this winter.

Haha no problem, I'm just messing with ya. Where were you able to find that color plasti-dip? I think tinited tails (as much as I normally don't like them) would help you pull that color off a little better. But I understand if they are just your winter wheels and not a part of your overall scheme right?

I couldn't find the colored plasti dip in stores so i got it off of ebay for about $70 for 6 cans (4 orange 2 gloss)
Yeah man just my winter set up. i do like it when its clean, but it seems this plastidip loooves to attract dirt so it rarely is looking clean. Super annoying actually. Do you have s4 mirrors? that would really help my summer set up haha where did you get them and how much?

I dont think I am clean enough for white. I really want to do something for my winters this year other than black. I was set on OD green, but with the red calipers, it might look too Christmas-ish.
The new plasti dip Blaze colors look solid. They have Blue, Green, Orange, Yellow, and Pink that I know of.
I wont be doing pink, but Blue, Green, or Orange sound good. I just cant decide.

Yeah man, just flipped the bulbs around and tucked them as high and away from any wires as I could. They don't get hot enough to do anything so don't worry. IF you're very unsure and want to be cautious, you can always slap some heat shrink on those suckers. Mine have been fine for almost a year now. Just don't forget to put some duct tape on the holes so light doesn't shine through them into the headlights

I didn't realize that A, he's still rocking that color. Thought he had changed it up. And B, that you moved to Denver. I'm clearly out of the loop.
Yeah, he has his 18's powder coated that color. It looks really good. And I left Chicago a month ago tomorrow, so I have been out here about 3 weeks, and it is SO much nicer than Chicago! I'm loving it.
Corey what color is that? paint or dip?
If I remember, I can take a picture of the can when I get home, but I used Krylon Indoor/Outdoor paint and sprayed it right over my black plastidip on the wheels. It took about 4 coats to completely hide the black behind it, but it came out alright. I didnt go with expensive paint and I really didnt prep very much. I was bored on Thanksgiving, and decided to try this out and if I feel like sticking with it, I might powder coat them.
Oh, and BTW, the rings on the front. They dont like paint. It sucked to get it to stick to them. I even cleaned those very well, but I didnt sand them at all because I'll just strip them and reuse them as chrome when summer comes back.

That's a really pretty color. I loved the purple wheels on the DG, but this on the white should look awesome!
Thanks! The purple just didn't seem to fit on the Ibis as much.

Thanks. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary as far as prep or process. The paint itself is Duplicolor Metalcast. It's a color-tinted clear coat designed to go over chrome or polished metal to give an anodized look, as seen here on our bolt covers which are (were) chrome plated:

If you don't have a polished/chrome surface you can spray a shiny silver as a base coat & then spray over that, which is what we did on the wheels. (I honestly did think of stripping and polishing them, but just too much work for winters). So the basic process for these was:
- Thoroughly clean & then scuff sand wheels (I used like 150 or something because it was the highest I had that wasn't a finishing grade, something like 220 would have been better)
- Spray several thin coats of base (silver) a few minutes apart. With this paint it's important that the base coat is even because you can still see it - all the metal flake you see is in the base
- Once that is dry, start laying color. This particular one is a blend. We did about 4 coats of green (thin, thin, medium, medium - this paint works better if the last couple coats are a bit heavy). Followed by a few coats of blue until we got the color we wanted. That's the fun thing about these translucent paints, you can blend into different colors
- For the center caps we then masked the teal portion & did the same in the center with purple, followed by a two light coats of blue to give it some depth
- After that's dry, I laid down 3 good solid coats of clear. Although the colored coats are technically clear, I figured this would help protect it and give it some depth
All in all I'd say there's probably 12-15 coats of paint on there, including the silver base coat. Another nice thing about this paint (and most rattle can paint) is that you only have to wait 5-10 minutes between coats. So by the time you're done with the last wheel, it's almost time to start the next coat on the first.
As for polishing, it was just a basic polish, all done by hand
- After clear is dry cut the orange peel by wet sanding with 1500 & 2000 grit until you get an even (dull) sheen. You have to be careful around edges to not accidentally sand through the clear
- After that just hand buff/polish with rubbing compound.
It's a bitch and time consuming, but the results are usually worth it.

Not going to lie, that duplicolour metalcast you did is really making me want to rip off my plasti-dip. The shimmer effect goes very well with wheels as opposed to the dull dip.

I'm going to have to check out the Metalcast! Looks pretty great! What did you use for a clear coat? Any rattle can clear coat I have ever used is not very tough or takes like over a year to harden up. I am very jealous though. They look outstanding. When I did mine, I threw down plastidip instead of primer and then went to town on it so it'll come off a little easier when i want to change them again.

Yeah, I never cared for flat look on wheels. It just makes them look dirty IMO.

It's a touch on the expensive side for rattle can paint, but I just love the way it looks. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=duplicolor+metalcast&sprefix=duplicolor+metal%2Caps%2C681
Clear is just standard Rustoleum clear that I picked up at Home Depot. I realize it's not ideal, and you're right that it takes a long time to fully harden. But I figure for wheels that are only on the car for a few months and are going to take a beating no matter what, it's good enough.

For that I'd do a full on orange, as if you were going to keep it that way, and then just start doing red on top until you get the color you like. Similar to what we did with green/blue, but orange/red instead. (Otherwise I think it would be difficult for the orange to cover the red)

and just for an update on mine, I used plastidip from last year (oct 2011) as a primer, and then I used crappy Krylon indoor/outdoor spray paint (Thanksgiving 2012) and they are holding up unbelievably well. Been through some nasty snow, quite a bit of driving into the mountains and back, lots of car washes with those spin brush wheel cleaner things, and so far I have had Zero issues.

There's no need to strip them. Just sand and paint. The stripping will just cause more of a headache them needed. The first set of wheels I painted I tried to strip first....it was a nightmare. They looked like shit. I've done 3 sets since by just cleaning/sanding and have had no issues and they've come out great.

Its just as easy to repaint them back to OEM before selling. Don't let resale ruin your enjoyment of the wheels. Paint is easy to change

Tank, love your wheels man. They turned out very nice.
You've inspired me to try something out. Been wanting to get rid of my Blue plasti-dip for something more metallic. can't stand the dullness of the plasti-dip tbh. I was going to go with a gunmetal, and thinking of putting a first base coating of light blue. With your experience of mixing undertones, do you think that'll work out?

Thanks. As for your color blending, its going to depend on the paint most likely. The ones I've been using are translucent, and designed to show the colors underneath. Because of that it makes blending colors very easy. You may be able to do it with other paints but I would definitely test it on some scraps first

Thanks for the input. I actually managed to find some of the Duplicolor Metalcast, same you used. I'll keep my eye out for the translucent shades. At $13 a can, I was weary even considering buying a blue colour for the undertone with a gunmetal on top

Nice. The metalcast can be hard to fund, especially the grey/smoke. That's why I always bought from Amazon. And yes, it can be pricey too, but its worth it. There are other translucent paints out there but this is the only one I've used

ripped the blue plasti-dip off my winters, now need a new colour. Going to do a dupli-colour metallic tone. Was thinking charcoal gray with blue undertones or perhaps a lighter bronze colour. Can't decide
