Upgrading RNS-E to latest maps

Okay, guys and gals, I know it is here and have searched, but cannot find it now. Am I able to upgrade my 2007 B7 A4 with RNS-E to the maps used in the 2012 A3? I just came back from a trip using a loaner 2012 A3 and the Nav is actually accurate and useful in it. It has version 0210, I believe.

Is this something I can do, or does the dealer need to do it? Thanks much!

I think you could upgrade to a 2009 DVD just by popping in the new DVD. IIRC, the FW upgrade is included on the DVD. But I don't know if a 2010+ DVD will work because they upgraded the whole RNS-E...I think.

You can purchase a new DVD from the dealer, via eBay, etc... Or, you can provide offsite/remote archival services for other site members....see the Telematics forum and decide from there.

Just download the upgrade for ure FW on ure RNS-E then download the dvd, from a torrent site with 2012 A3 maps, i did this 3 days ago to my brother in law's Audi S4 B6 works like a charm, and yes use Verbartim they are most secure for that :)

You dont need to search in torrent sites you got everything on GPS Underground site i gave you.
I'm not sure wich RNS-E you use or others cuz myself i don't use RNS-E i use Dynavin but i think this is the one ure looking for.
This one is for the B6 audi but B6 B7, is almost the same car and i think they use the same RNS-E

Well yes, almost easy like that, you need to have newer firmware on your RNS-E it will update automatically if you have the DVD Maps with the drivers in it.
allmost 90% of them uses the drivers inside also.

it is good to have Dual layer DVD's depending on how big the files are.

Earlier software versions had VIM unlocked, whereas it was locked in later versions.
You need an external DVD player for it to work, you can't use the DVD player in your RNS-E.

This sems to be the firmware update for B7 A4 to version SW0260 wich uses to use maps from 2008 above

AWESOME! Thanks man. Just loaded in my 06 A4 and works great... I burned the disc on a Mac so if you're on a Mac here's what you do:

Insert your blank DVD+R DL disc and choose "Open in finder" when the message comes up. Open Disk Utility (In the Utilities folder inside your Applications folder). Click the "Burn" icon at the top of the Disk Utility Main Window. Point the "Select Burn Image" window to the ISO file and click burn. Select your drive options and burn.

I tried mounting the ISO image and burning the contents to a disc and it didn't work. This is the only way I was able to get it to go.

and guys with PC dont forget to change the book type to DVD and use Dual Layer DVD´s, burn the ISO/IMG file with IMG Burn it works best for this things :)

I grabbed mine off the web (torrent) and used actually memorex duel layer this time that i grabbed @ radio shack on short nortice and burned it with IMGBURN (freeware) in windows 7.

I couldn't get the ISO to work and ended up buying a disk from an AZ member for $30. He has more.

Yup, see. Just find an AZ member with the maps you want and see what they would charge to make a backup for your version that is obviously scratched and no longer working. Cost will probably fall somewhere between free and $30.

Here is an update guys, I was able to burn the 2011-2012 maps using a HP LAPTOP with image burn from the torrent posted. It had a newer burner than my computer. I used a regular memorex dual layer disc and it took about 20 minutes. At the end it works.

Now I need the 2013 map.

Hey Guys!! I also need a Nav Cd. My 08 b7 didn't come with one so I need a nav DVD but it doesn't have to be 2013/14 - i would be fine with 11/12 for now if anyone knows where to get one. Thanks!! Also - anyone figure out how to use the RNS-E any better than me - For some reason the only way the SD cards will load is if I have like 10 songs and the ipod connection in the glove box is simply garbage... Any ideas - I do love how clean it is and the Bose sounds great but its functionality is terrible. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!! thanks

I found mine on TPB, though I'm not sure its a good idea to go on that particular site at work. I can try to find the torrent and repost the link tonight when I'm home.

There weren't many seeders so the download took a day or so, but the ISO worked perfectly.

I am on a Mac and was able to successfully burn it with the disk utility that comes with the OS X. One suggestion I have is to lower the burning speed a bit since it's such a large file. Burning at fastest available speed might cause errors and produce a corrupt disk.

The Verbatim brand DVD+R DL discs, specifically, are supposed to be the best discs.

I have no idea why that is, but I randomly happened to have those exact discs and a DVD burner that was listed as compatible in the list on that forum so I figured I would give it a whirl, I had nothing to lose.

-Use IMGBurn to burn your DVDs.
-Set booktype to DVD-Rom.
-Some dvd burners won't let you set booktype (My laptop didn't) but for some reason my drive (Lite-On) automatically writes DL DVDs to DVD Roms.
-Memorex DVDs don't work. The new ones aren't made by Ritek and are CMC Mag and will burn as a DVD Rom but RNSE wont read it. Buy Verbatims.

If you run into any problems, PM me. I just made a 2013/14 nav disc and tested it and it works just fine on my unit.

I can confirm that Memorex discs won't work. I either got burn errors or when the burn process completed successfully the disk wouldn't work in RNS-E. Looks like Verbatim disks are the ones to use? Any other brands that should work?

Discs manufactured by Ritek or MKM (Mitsubishi) will (SHOULD) work.
Older Memorex were Ritek (I have a 2010/11 maps that is Memorex Ritek)
Verbatim is manufactured by both Ritek and MKM (last I read)

The ones I bought were off Amazon Prime because no one local had them. Also, if they are the 8x write speed, they are made in Singapore=better quality

Stick to Verbatims.

Let me clarify here:

Memorex DVDs DO work....HOWEVER

They must be Ritek Discs and not CMC Magnetic Discs, CMC Mag discs don't read in RNS-Es (also branded Philips, Maxwell, etc)

Just stick to Verbatim, it will work.

Then you are probably just having issues with the burning process. My macbook pro doesn't have a dvd drive so I just use my windows desktop. Ive been burning 360 games for almost 10 years now so I just used the same dvd drive and dvds as I did for that and I didn't have any issues. But I am fairly confident you need the change your book type in the drive settings and you may not be able to do that with the internal macbook drive.

Ok I burned the disc as recommended, using suggested software but still the same results. I insert the dvd and before I close the display it tells me that it's software version 0230, and when I close it says insert navigation dvd..

I can confirm this works. I burned today with a 2010 MacBook Pro using Apple's Disk Utility and Verbatim disc. I simply opened Disk Utility, clicked the Burn button, selected this ISO, and burned at the slowest setting I could (2.4x, this took about 40-45 mins.). Popped it in 2007 B7 A4 RNS-E and everything works.

When I tried to load a DVD that I made from the MAC Burn Utility the unit reboots a number of times saying “Navigation is being initialized Please wait. Then after a period of rebooting it says DVD is unreadable.

One thought, I am using Verbatim DVD+R DL Life Series. Has Anyone else had problems with this medium?

The life series definitely are cheaper than the others. That probably is the issue. What speed are you burning on the Mac?

usually the slowest speed, but on the MAC I didn't see that option. I'm going to go out and get the Verbatim AZO's since these are blue and the AZO's are silver...

Just a little more info to help anyone burn their 'backup':

I successfully burned the ISO using a 2010 MacBook Pro, running Mavericks. Drive is a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS23N, Firmware Revision:SB11 (according to About this Mac > More Info > System Report > Disc Burning). Used Disk Utility at 2.4x speed, and no verification with Verbatim AZO.

OK just to let everyone know, I just received the Verbatim DVD R DL AZO disk and successfully burned the ISO using my 2010 MacBook Pro/ disk utility's, burned slowest speed...Wala it worked!!!!

The link I posted? It doesn't have a virus. That's the exact ISO I downloaded (as have others) without issue so my guess is you've got an issue on your end either with your BitTorrent client, or maybe an AV program flagging a false positive.

Hey guys in relation to this, I got a burned disc from a member on here and I am having problems with getting the system to update, it kept coming up that the disc was unreadable. At first we thought it was the disc or that because I was trying to update from version 020 all the way to 260 that I was trying to jump to far. So he sent me another sw260 disc and a disc from 07 with sw200 on it to try and bridge the gap.

Now I got the 2 new discs and after a few tries I got the sw200 disc to work and update but now I cant get either of sw260 disc work. It just comes up with the disc unreadable error or I get the update bar to appear but the bar doesnt move and after a few seconds I get a black screen with some chinese characters on it.


I am wondering is it the disc or is it my system? The disc seem rather hot when I eject them. idk if that means anything

Do a search on vim hack, and you'll see my thread about it. You need to be on SW0200 I think, but changed to whatever it is you want. I left mine on 0260 for the aux input when I had a RNS-E in possession. I would've posted the link, but I'm using my phone.

I inserted the dvd, the RNS-E display indicated that it was upgrading the software, and then it completed. It then asked me to insert the Nav DVD. I was under the impression that the DVD I burned included the new maps and was to replace the 2008 DVD I had. I tried removing and reinserting the new DVD, but it kept asking for the Nav DVD. It works fine with the original 2008 DVD. Am I missing something?

Try rebooting your unit with the disk inside.

Rebooted (held AM/FM and setup together for 15 seconds) a few times with no luck. Still asking for the Nav DVD. I will try burning another one. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

I successfully burned a copy this week from the link posted. I used verbatium 2.4x DVD+r DL disc, I used imgburn and set it at 2.4x speed. Took about 45 minutes to burn it and another 20 minutes to analyze it.

Just a thought, maybe it's not allowing you to jump from 2008 to 2014 update just like that ?

I then changed the DVD writer to an Asis drive I had recently installed in another machine, and success using burnaware. Maps now work using 2014 DVD. I first tried downloading imgburn but the few mirrors I went to lit up my antivirus software.

Happy to burn and mail 5 copies to the first five people that PM me if anyone needs one, with the qualifier that success is not guaranteed and I am not responsible for impact to your system.

Now to figure out why my bluetooth stopped working and Tel screen says telephone not available. In the last week bluetooth was intermittently synching with and then dropping my phone. Now I don't see the audi bluetooth at all. The phone works well with another car, so it is probably not the phone.

The vast majority of the time, if the disc isn't recognized it's a burning issue or a disc/media issue. Pioneer drives seem to do the most accurate/compatible burns, and most desktop macs come with pioneer drives which is why most of us Mac guys have so few issues burning discs. I know with other burns I've had to make for various other bits of software over the years, my Macs built in Pioneer drive has always been listed at the top of the lists for compatibility.

Glad you got it working. Yea the Nav discs are super finicky with the type of burner as well as the program used.

With your Bluetooth you likely need to code the rnse with vagcom. It needs to have Bluetooth coded in as well as the head unit needs to have the telephone prep coded in as well to activate all the hands free and phone features.

Thanks Charles. Does it makes sense that it is a coding issue since Bluetooth was working, started intermittently failing, and now does not work? Does resetting rnse or updating the maps potentially change bluetooth settings? I tried going back to factory defaults with no success.

That's true Charles and good info as well. I had mine in sequence when I did the update then VIM HACK. It's good that you can jump from'09 to '14

I did the antenna amplifier fix with the clips and the code went away, but I'm still not getting all the channels?

Agree I cant stand my nav on my A$ B7 Cabriolet imo not user friendly I end up spending more time punching buttons because its not touch screen. I go to Google and speak the address and boom I get directions. (:

I plan on removing that outdated radio in the future and will replaced it by touch screen navigation and there are some units out there ie pioneer which will be controlled by the steering wheel buttons.

Potentially. I’m not sure if it’s hard to rip the DVD, my thought is it should be trivial. To burn the discs you need a somewhat specific burner as only some are compatible with the disc format. I recently tried with my Blueray burner and it failed, but both my Apple DVD burners work.

this is correct, only the early US firmware versions had the warning screen. I think any from version 0200 up do not have it (0260 is current/latest/last for 1st-gen units, and what will be included with the 2015/16 maps)

They will not be originals but they will certainly work. Burned copies will work fine as long as they were burned right. I used to rip and burn a copy from people that had bought the originals so I would have an updated copy for my RNS E when I had one.

Great news! No issues with the nav disc(s). I only tested disc one but I think its safe to assume the second one should work just fine.
They are definitely copies, the seller went the extra mile to reproduce the original labels on the discs as well.

I bought those eBay discs as well. Located in VA, had issues twice in about a year where the maps became unreadable. But a power cycle fixed it

0260 is the latest firmware. So all you'd be getting is a new map file (i.e. new roads)

I did it so that I could have the new firmware, which gets rid of that annoying warning message about data entry while driving, every single time I drive. The maps still don’t cover all of my area, 2015 is 4 years ago so I probably wouldn’t do it in your scenario, but for the eBay ones it is only like $15
