Redrilling wheels- bolt pattern 5x120 to 5x112

Hey guys, I have found a set of wheels I like that are a bolt pattern of 5x120 (cb 72.56). Here are the options I have figured out:

-Wobble bolts
-Redrill

Is redrilling safe? The internet gives too much conflicting information, some say it is ok, some say it is not safe and going over even a small pothole will ensure the wheel will break. Don't know much about running wobble bolts. Does anyone have any insight on this? Keep in mind, the center bore is 72.56 and I need it to go to 66.6, so on top of redrilling I need hubcentric rings.

Hey Parsa from the research that I've done, redrilling is safe. Rotiform will do it for you and should run about $200. Wobble bolts won't work because 8mm is too much of a difference. I know of a lot of guys with fast track cars that have redrilled wheels. Get aluminum hubcentric rings, Discount tire has them cheap and they are top quality. What wheels are you looking at?

Ultra had bolt pattern re drilled on his VMR VB3's to 5x112
IMO aluminum hub centric rings are safest route 72.5 to 66.5 - plastic rings will likely work, if you don't switch summer-winter-summer.
'Wobble Bolts' - name is enough to scare me away, just saying.

i thought i answered your question before, but i also have the exact same setup as ultra.

redrilled from 5x120 to 5x112 and 72.56 to 66.6.

i can't say if redrilling is safe or not but i have mine and i dont have a problem with them at all. i used four hubcentric plastic rings that I got off ebay, and those have worked fine for me so far

Thanks for all the input guys. Hey Calbee, my previous question was actually about fitment- I wanted to know if 19x10 et 35 would work with 245/35/19. This time I wanted to know if it was safe to redrill. Thanks for the input on both threads.

I have heard nothing good about wobble bolts. Go with the redrilling option.

Wobble bolts work great, when they can be used. Usually needs to be within 2mm. There are also a ton of people who use wobble bolts, most ppl that say bad things about them are those who have never used them.

I'm one who would never use b/c structural integrity is questionable whether 2mm or 8mm compared to straight lug bolts.
Not worth the risk to me or passengers in my ride.

Hey Greg, I agree with you that they sound unsafe, but I did extensive research and called quite a few different companies before using them on my car. Not all wobble bolts/nuts are created equally so you do want to make sure you get ones that have been tested and certified (I forgot who, but the company that does extensive safety testing on all wheels/lugs/bolts before deeming them safe to used on the road). When I was researching them, I remember reading a lot of people confidently stating that they are not safe, but when they were questioned, none of them had personal experience...it was just the concept that led them to believe that it was not safe. It's safer to run wobble bolts that are seated correctly than running R12 ball seat lugs on an R13 wheel visa versa, or running cone seat lugs on a ball seat wheel visa versa.

On left front rim they either forgot to install the hub ring (66.5 to 57.1 supplied by me) or did not not torque the lug bolts. Two weeks later rim came off the car while wife was driving in local streets - not freeway.
Needless to say she was seriously freaked out - loved one screaming/crying over cell phone in Spanish/English was not something I care to experience again.

I'm extremely cautious b/c 8 months ago my formally reliable shop installed V708s from my B8 on wife's B6. :-O I hope she was okay. Yeah, hub rings are a must and I always torque my wheels to 90ft/lbs with the torque wrench. Stupid tire shops always try to put the lugs back on with their air wrenches that are set to over 120ft/lbs and that can end up causing serious damage.

Yeah she's fine now, she loves the look of hyper silver V708s on her Dolphin Grey B6.
