View Full Version : Where to place EZ-Pass?

dawei213
03-21-2012, 06:32 PM
I've searched and search and couldn't find any threads about placement of the EZ-pass in a hidden or non-viewable area. In my previous car, I had a middle cubbie on my dash I just throw the ez-pass in. It worked just fine. However, in our car, there really isn't any place to place the EZ-pass without it being able to read 100% of the time. The glove box or center console isn't a good area.

Where do you guys place your ez-pass?

Right behind the mirror, visible but not too bad.

Yeah, I would like it to not be visible from both the outside and inside.

If you have a front plate, get a license plate mount

i keep it in center dash and when need to use just take it out while going through. No ez passes will be displayed on my beauty...that shit is too clean

After tossing my front plate ezpass mount (show n go plate now) I picked up one of these in black and hid it behind the mirror as well. Manageable.

I just leave it in the cup holder and hold it up when I go through the toll area. BUT, I painted mine black. On my previous S4, I did mount it on the windshield, in an area where I could not see it when I was driving. Was not very visible from the outside. Stealth.

hidden behind the mirror, I can't see it, suits me fine.
Kenfused,
Where did you get that holder?

Kenfused

I bought it a Splash Car Wash ( not with the black S4...[>_>] Swirl City.
Here is a link though, I'm sure a generic search would yield plenty of varieties.

No front license plate for PA thankfully!

I'm too lazy to have to hold it up every day, twice a day.

And I've had those EZ-pass transponder holder before. I had one that lasted me 3 years or so before I dropped it and cracked it. then I purchased two more, both of which just could not stand the heat of summer and the plastic melted. So I never used it again. I'm wonder if I can pry it apart and take the electronics out and fit it in the sunglasses compartment.

Did the same on my last car and on current. It looks like garbage if you mount it up on the windshield behind the rv mirror like most people do.

I bought one of these, in black: http://www.tagsak.com/. Mine is mounted (with the suction cups) on the lower left hand side. In NY you have to put the inspection/registration stickers there anyway, so putting a black EZ Pass pouch right behind them doesn't add any extra clutter.

I actually wrapped mine in black duct tape and mounted it behind the right side of the rear-view mirror.

Pretty stealth that way, and less effort than painting.

I currently have mine sitting on my drive side B&O tweeter, right behind the state inspection stickers. I would rather just have it not visible. I was thinking of ripping apart the Ez-pass until i saw these pictures: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2753717&postcount=9

Sunroof!!!

I have the small sticky "Sunpass Mini" and didn't want it visible either, so I stuck it to the lower left edge of my sunroof glass and its perfect!

No one see's it and I always get a reaction from my passengers when they ask where it's installed

I have never had an issue passing through toll plaza's or anything like that, it's perfect!

I painted both sides. Don't remember what paint I used back then, but I might recommend, Rustoleum "Universal" paint. Or Krylon for plastic. Both will stick to plastic. Also, I masked off the white sticker that has the bar code on it.

I only need the EZ Pass once a week or so, so got the "T case" for it. Leatherette, but also available in genuine leather (and designer colors/patterns if you're so inclined). I keep it in the armrest cubby when not using it, and just set it on the dash on the days I need it. I didn't want to stick it on the windshield, but that option is available too.

I saw these and thought they look pretty good, but I definitely wouldn't want to have it sitting on my dash. It looks like a wallet waiting to just "walk away" from a smashed window.

Now come to think of it, I might try plastidipping it. The sticky nature of the plastidip would help give it some adhesion to the dashboard as I'm taking those hard turns.

Yeah, I agree that it does resemble a wallet, so I only have it out on the dash when I'm actually in the car and using it. Once I get past the last toll gate it goes back in the cubby out of sight. It's pretty stable on the dash and I've never had it slide. Plastic dipping might be a good solution too!

Very inconspicuous and doesn't reflect light much so you won't see a reflection on your windshield on a sunny day. I'm very satisfied with the result.

Same here. I used matte black rustoleum, but painted everything including the white label (I first recorded the unit's serial number). When it dies and needs to be replaced in 10 years, I'm sure they'll charge me $50 for the cost of the unit, but it's a small price to pay for the clean look.

Are you planning on leaving that on the dash? I've had two EZ passes stolen, one plate mounted one and one from inside the car. Ever since, I've been paranoid about where I put it and got one of the suction cup mounts...till I realized it leaves two cup prints on the window and got sick of having to wipe down my window all the time. Now I just keep it in the cup holder when I'm driving and hold it up if I need it, when I'm done it goes back in the glove box.

Yeah, but I'm not too concerned about it. Living in the burbs of Philadelphia, EZ Pass theft is not high on the list.

Nice job on the EZ pass. But ...

Here in ON, we have to live with front plates which do detract from the look of the car. But those massive windshield stickers you have to put on aren't much better!

Having windshield sticker better than having front plates ... ok, neither is great. :D I guess I'm so used to it. It doesn't bother me. Plus there's nothing I can do about that.

I wish we have those Mini passes as well.

Oh that sucks :( ... sorry you have to call it in to get rid of the v-tolls. That's strange that it won't scan. For my current ez-pass, in my previous car, I had it in a cubbie in the middle of the dashboard and it scanned. Thanks for the info though! I'll probably get the smaller version anyhow just because.

you can tuck it pretty far back under the head liner, I did that then used a piece of vinyl on the outside to cover from seeing it from the outside, you'd have to put your head forward and look up to see it in the inside, could always put another piece if vinyl on the inside too though..

Now that I know that my EZ-Pass which was meant to be attached to the front licence plate will work quite happily in the center console, with the lid closed, I would like to mount it out of site; preferably in the engine bay or under the front bumper. Any suggestions would be quite welcome.

I do the same. No one sees it and it always registers on the toll booth (on a toll road every day).

Frankly, in this area, everyone has an EZPASS (unless you're a moron who likes to wait in the single cash or credit lane), so no one thinks anything of seeing them in a variety of cars.

This sounds like a pain in general. With the Fastrak (https://www.bayareafastrak.org/en/home/index.shtml) system in NorCal you don't need to have the device visible, or even in the car. You just register your plate with the system, and you can have more than one car registered to the same account and device. If the device doesn't register when you drive through the toll, no problem, they just snap a shot of your rear plate and use that to identify your account.

I leave my transponder in the sheath it came with until I need to use it. When I do, I just place it in an area of the dash where it won't slide around a lot, and then put it away when I exit off of toll roads. I personally just don't want the transponder left, "open", all the time. But for someone who needs it for a daily commute, I could see the need to permanently mount it.

I'm not sure what the problem is with just keeping it in your armrest and taking it out when you need it. If you don't want it visible from inside *OR* outside of the car, then you need to do something like this. It has to be in a place that radio signals aren't being blocked at all. Unfortunately, any kind of window tinting will block more radio signals than you'd think, so keeping it somewhere in the middle of the car unfortunately can have the blocking effect, as will some of the body paneling. Sometimes it'll work, but sometimes it won't. If you want it to work reliably, you have to mount it somewhere accessible. Plastidip the thing if you want to blend it in, but there's not much way around physics.

You can generally tell the people who don't have their EZpass mounted somewhere "permanently." They're the ones who slow down to find the pass prior to the toll and drift to the right as they're grabbing it from the glove compartment

I'm definitely not in that category. I always make sure mine is out and ready. Same thing for going to a toll booth requiring change. I don't like it when some person pulls in the lane in front of you, and take forever to pull out a twenty-doll bill and wait for the change. Or the person searching their floorboards, console, glove box, etc., for random coins. There are people who think of others, and then those that don't.

Then I'll wait it out. I don't use my current transponder enough to justify buying another. When I need it, I'll just pull it and then put it back when I'm done.

The units (and subsequent upgrades) are free in VA.

I had one replaced by them last year, and I just got an email last week saying that a new tag is on its way to me to replace the other one on my account. I wonder why they do that?

Damn those are huge. We just have thin stickers in our state.

It's not the same thing. The stickers are fine if you only travel on toll roads in YOUR state. They do not cross over to other states. The electronic transponders they are talking about here will work with many tolling systems in several states.
