I swapped B6 S4 rears onto my B6 A4. AFAIK, B6/B7 S4 brakes are the same.

Anyways, no pics really but it's actually pretty straight forward. First thing is the dust shield needs to be opened up slightly for the carriers to fit. They are much wider than the stock ones. Second, the handbrake needs to be popped out of the clips on the lower control arm to give you more slack so the end can be installed in the caliper. Then you can put the cable back in the clips.

Other than that, they bolt right up with no issues. Just make sure to use the original carrier bolts, they are different lengths. At first, I tried using the S4 carrier bolts I had gotten with the calipers, but the lower bolt didn't have enough threads engaged.

I have B7 A4 rear's.. any of the parts interchangable? carriers?

I know it's a stupid question but, what do you guys use to hold your sunglasses? I've seen a couple of clip things that are pretty "functional" in the looks department.

I didn't know if you guys know of something a little more elegant or clever.

Interesting, but I would like to keep my handles. I'm now thinking of velcroing a small black pouch to the side of my center console in a low out of sight place. For super easy access. I used to just put my sunglasses back in their case and on the door recess. Just seems like a pain to do every single time.

I really don't like those visor clips they sell and I haven't found one that doesn't look super cheap. Hopefully the little pouch will be enough out of the way to not be noticeable and / or tacky.

What is everyone using to replace their e-brake cables? Is there a revised part that isn't so prone to seizing? Are the B7 e-brake cables better?

Is the eBay short shifter any good for the '04 1.8T 6-speed? Had one in my old B5 5-speed and it was great.
My existing B6 6-speed stock shifter doesn't have any slop (even has less slop than the JHM shifter in my B5 with JHM linkage upgrade). But the throw of the stock shifter is just so long... and I don't want to spend $275 since the JHM group group buy ended.

It's $40.50 right now:

Clearly you lack experience with this item... the stock shifter is "inferior quality" too IMO. At least in the B5 world, the eBay SS mitigates some of the lesser quality of the stock shifter, so I am asking here for anyone's actual non-speculative experience with one in a B6.

I was considering going with the cheaper eBay shifter for the B6, but the only one I could find was $140~ or around there. For that price, I decided to go with the JHM. Could you provide a link to the one you're talking about? For $40 it wouldn't hurt to try it...

Looks like the plastic ball is replaced with a metal one, but the plastic socket/cage is retained unlike the JHM one. It looks decent, I'd go for it.

This is where my thoughts are as well. But if, for example, the metal ball is undersized, then that would be bad and certainly worthy of being called a waste of money.

I still have to take apart the shifter on my B6... in neutral it sits angled to the right and is pretty annoying. So at that time I will compare it to the eBay ad.

I was thinking the same, if the metal ball isn't the right size it will create even more slop.

While I lack experience with this exact China knockoff executed poorly, I have plenty of experience with shifters in general. The stock shifter is actually pretty decent, with materials used that are properly suited to the job required of it. The ball is a durable nylon material that is hard wearing and not easily scratched or broken. The shifter shaft is steel and the pivot bushings are brass/bronze. With a fairly thick cast aluminum linkage connector, there isn't much to go wrong with it.
My car had 185K on the original 5 speed shifter that was plenty tight. The shifter I put into it during my 0A3 swap came out of an S4 Cabrio with almost 200K on it, nice and firm with no parts requiring replacement. My wife's B7 6 speed has 188K on it and only has the slightest bit of play due to the pivot ball on the transmission itself.

Go ahead, blow your money on a product that is going to be poorly machined and ill-fitting and that will require 4 times the amount of time necessary to make it half ass work. I'm sure you're going to get many miles out of those chinsy plastic bushings they include.

I had one of these in my MK4 Golf and just a heads-up that not all sunglasses will fit inside. If your sunglasses fold relatively flat, you're fine, but any that curve out would either not fit, or the cover will not fully close against the headliner, which I found extremely distracting.

Can someone confirm a small detail for me??

Doing a full suspension refresh (FCP control arm kit & Bilstein w/ Eibach Pro) followed by an alignment.

My question is in regards to adding in spacers, should I be doing this before the alignment ? Will adding spacers afterwards mess up my alignment ?

I would like to let the new springs/struts settle a bit, then take my measurements for what size spacer I will need, then order up. I'm running stock 17" sport wheels and want to flush out the wheel after she gets a little lower..

Thanks in advance!

05-27-2016, 10:31 AM
Spacers really won't affect the alignment. but I do have some suggestions. The Eibach ProKit springs are going to put you somewhere around 25" FTG. You need to take that into account when you get your alignment. Here's my suggestion: Clicky click (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/644245-Front-Alignment-Settings-For-Your-Lowered-B6-A4)®

Bought a reman S4 rear caliper... I've noticed some light rust forming on the inside circumference of the rotor. I'm not sure what would cause this. I have never seen something like this before. The slide pins were greased during the install. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160601/65ee5b9c5c6425c549daf7abb309e35a.jpg

@fR3ZNO - don't think it really matters our rotors rust really easily; I get rust specks on the roter after leaving the car overnight when I have washed it. The pad will remove the rust spots wherever it's in contact with the rotor.

But you're right, surface rust should go after a short drive. But it's not in this case.

OK, I need some help!
I picked up a set of B7 brake calipers. Took out the pistons from all and they were nice and clean including the bores. The rear calipers were horribly rusted on the outside. So, I got all the calipers sandblasted and powdercoated and I just got them back. However, it seems that my powdercoater was lazy and did not cover the bores before sandblasting as there's lots of sand inside the bores, especially in the rear calipers that have the e-brake mechanism with its circlip etc. Not good! [headbang]
Also, I removed the bleeder screws from the rear calipers as they were quite rusted, but I managed not to break them. The fronts, I left in. But again, the guy did not cover them, so they are powdercoated in place! [facepalm] I was planning to install new ones, so the only problem is how to get them out. I think I will have to carefully chip the powder around their base before I try to turn them and snap the top half off. But here's my main question/issue: how do I get rid of the caked on sand and clean the inside of the rear caliper bores and the e-brake screw/mechanism? I will try to get out what I can, but is there anything I use to flush the caliper to get the sand off the walls and the screw? Audi manual say to use mineral spirits to clean the pistons. Will that or brake cleaner get the sand off too?
I wasn't planning to replace the e-brake seals, but now it sounds like a good idea to do (I have the full seal kit), huh? The only problem is that the nut holding the e-brake levers is... yep, you guessed it - powdercoated in place! [headbang]

Help me please!

Well, I took the rear calipers completely apart and removed the handbrake mechanism. Lots of sand, but I can see the light at the end of tunnel...or caliper bore in this case! With a toothbrush, I managed to clean quite a bit and mineral spirits cleaned the ebrake spring assembly nicely, so I'm hopeful.

Now, I just need to find proper lube/grease for caliper re-assembly. That is not the grease for slide pins, but to use under the ebrake seals etc. Lithium grease is recommended, but I don't know whether my white lithium grease will work or whether I should buy something else. What's the consensus on washer reservoirs?

I have a spare on the shelf, but it appears to be the lower big one of this pic.
Yet under my hood, I only see the small top one.

In addition, the one I have on the shelf has various hose and motor/pump connection points, obviously sealed by rubber.
Many were perished.
I assume this will affect all of our cars, sooner than later.
I hear there's a seal kit. I've not yet found PN in ETKA.

Preventative maintenance to avoid a leak? Maybe something to do while front end is off during TB service?
Thin film of Dow Corning on new seals to keep them healthy longer?
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f95/eljimax/Ashley%20Headlight%20Washer/IMG_3212.jpg

Is the lower even needed, if you delete front headlight spray? Canada only option maybe? Is there benefit to freeing the space?
I've used the spray once in years.

They are both needed as they work as one system. The top one is just a filler reservoir. The bottom one has the washer pump(s) depending on your equipment and car. For example, an Avant pump is different as it has an extra connection to run fluid to the rear wiper. If you have Xenons, you have headlight washers and a pump for them.

Yes, everything is easier to access while the front is off. I'd replace the seals under the pumps and check all hoses and their connections on the bumper.

So far, only found 1 seal PN. I think there's at least 4.
Deleted the headlight washers and epoxied the covers solid to the bumper. <-- not planning to re-spray paint any time soon. Otherwise, I'd make it flush/fill.
Used a vacuum cap to plug the res hose, and delete the long one on the bumper that always snags up when u put it in service position, and makes bumper removal difficult.
I believe OG also did this.

Not a wiring diagram per se. More like the diagram in the fuse panel. My windshield wipers and my fog lights stopped working around the same time. I wanted to see if there's something that might be related to the relays.

I scanned with my Rosstech cable and I got a reading saying that it couldn't communicate with the windshield wiper motor. I will scan again this afternoon and let you know the exact codes.

Bentley among other resources have relay locations and functions. Just a heads up, the lights and wiper motor are controlled by the Vehicle Electronic Control Module located under the dash. No relays for either of those. They are powered directly from the VECM.

Since 2 days after I installed a HFC on my 1.8 I have been getting an intermittent P0130. I've swapped out the 02 sensor but the code returned. Wiring at the connector looked fine the last time I checked. Anywhere else to check? Been like this for well over a year and goes off in its own normally if I wait it out.

Also, anything good to restore the finish to a steering wheel? Mine is getting a little rough on top.

B/c horns stopped working today.

Any 12v horn from a wreckers will do. Just take the old one with you for size ;)

How do you clean the window felt?
It scratched my tint and looks dirty.

Unless, replacement?

Tint Shops sells roll of it ("Felt/Moleskin") and some places have it in "specific vehicle fitments" to install when tinting cars that never came with it stock.

does anybody have the parts number for the triple square seat bolts? I was replacing the seats with recaros and in my stupidity i fucked up the bolts on the passenger seat in the front. The threads on the bolt look like they are messed up now. Any advice on how to proceed? I managed to take the bolts out and used the bolts on the rear of the seat and that drove in fine, I think the threading inside is fine just need new bolts.

A HFC isn't as efficient as the stock cat which is why you are getting that code. You either need a spacer or to have the sensitivity numbed by your/a tuner.

A P0130 doesn't have any thing to do with the cat. The code is for the front wideband sensor (pre-cat). Did you change the front or the rear sensor?

I changed the front sensor out when the code first started popping up. It sometimes goes for weeks without reappearing.

I also have a spacer installed for the rear spacer already. Installed that the same time as the HFC.

Check for any exhaust leaks in front of the wideband sensor. The code P0130 indicates a malfunction in the circuit. The difference in the level of O2 in the exhaust stream versus the level of O2 outside of the exhaust stream is what generates the voltage signal from the wideband O2 sensor. If there is an exhaust leak the sensor will not be able to generate the voltage fluctuation that the ECM expects to see from the sensor. Consequently it assumes there is something wrong with the circuit.

The turbo to cat gasket is well-known for leaking. The cheap gaskets you get from companies like Walker don't do the trick. If you smell exhaust coming from around your turbo chances are it's coming from your cat to Turbo gasket. I got a Fel-Pro gasket that has a metallic coating. It's the right gasket to get.

Doh! I didn't pay enough attention and just saw it as the typical rear o2 code.
If you put a quality sensor in it when you replaced it then I would agree with the others, that you need to figure out which gasket is leaking and replace it.

With a manual, if coasting in gear, fuel is cut and, therefore, none consumed unlike coasting in neutral.

Weirder things have been asked on this thread. I'm pretty happy with my APR exhaust which I believe is Billy Boat. I'm not a big fan of powder coating, it seems like a form of insulation for the exhaust, I don't know... And I think exhaust should be stainless steel. Not much when googling other than an A8 that may not have needed it (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/168248-A8-D3-2005-Should-this-dash-panel-Airbag-fuse-be-missing), general airbag light issues and airbag fraud.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the pictures I took when I had the bar off and was cutting it. It's less than I remember.. I've taken a couple of photos with the grill removed just now, you'll get the idea. I guess each manufacturer might make/route their piping a little different. Pulling apart my A4's front end for the first time (but have done it MANY times on my B5).
On the B6, the power steering cooler runs right through the lock carrier...... it looks like the Bentley manual says to disconnect the power steering lines.

Has anybody ever cut the lock carrier to allow the PS cooler to be removed without messing with power steering fluid? Or something else?

old guy
06-25-2016, 02:41 PM
There is no need to disconnect the power steering cooler lines. Just remove the one bolt and you can maneuver it back through the lock carrier.

MetalMan

There is no need to disconnect the power steering cooler lines. Just remove the one bolt and you can maneuver it back through the lock carrier.

There are 2 bolts (already removed) and 2 plastic brackets. One of those brackets holds the ambient air temp sensor, the other bracket is used to secure the other end of the cooler.
Won't fit through the lock carrier opening with those plastic brackets intact.

old guy
06-25-2016, 03:11 PM
Yes it will. You just have to rotate it around a little to get it to fit through the opening. I have replaced my timing belt four times now and never had to disconnect the power steering cooler.

Pull the cooler out to where it is perpendicular to the lock carrier. Then rotate the mounting bracket to where the pointed end with the bolt hole is sticking into the opening. The rotate the cooler through the opening.

That first plastic bracket won't fit through the opening if rotated 90 degrees. The opening isn't wide enough.
Thinking about enlarging the opening with my Dremel...

OK I apologize. I finally found a picture and realized that I simply pulled the lock carrier out of the way and the power steering cooling lines had enough slack to go with the lock carrier. The cooler remains on the outside of the carrier.

That certainly explains it, thanks for the insight and effort. It would be so much easier to remove the whole lock carrier (provided I can fit the cooler through the hole) due to the positioning of the car in my garage. I may just try my luck with the Dremel...

1) Anyone one use those coolant additives to lower the coolant temperatures?

2) What's the recommended intervals for changing differential fluids?

3) When replacing brake pads, is it necessary to use new hardware?

Not a lot of people use those additives. I personally don't. I use a good minimum 50/50 mixture of coolant to inhibit rust, it also gets very cold in Minnesota in winter.

I would say fifty thousand miles on diff fluid is okay. Audi calls they're differential fluid life time, but I just don't see that plausible. I would do fifty thousand, that sounds reasonable.

You should always use new hardware when you change your brakes. That's my personal opinion and I'm sticking to it. Even the slides. And the new ceramic lubricant that they are using nowadays is fantastic. Much better than silicone.

That's for the transmission itself. I've used redline auto trans fluid in my auto B5 A4 with good results. Cheap too.

I'm not sure what's up with the price difference between the two, but I used redline gear oil with no issues. I'm not sure if the front diff on an auto trans takes GL4 or GL5. I know the manual trans which shares fluid with the front diff takes GL4.

Transmission shouldn't make a difference. My 6-speed grabs fairly high, but so did my B5's 5-speed.
My B6 was experiencing intermittent rev hang. FCP Euro has Genuine Audi clutch switches for $13 right now. I also reset my existing clutch switch to see if that will make it work all the time instead of intermittently.

What does the 3.0 rev to on the stock tune? This thing has felt pretty peppy since I got it, and I got it from a used car dealer so there was no way to know what the previous owner did.

I just took it to redline on a freeway onramp last night and the redline starts at 6500, but it went to 7000 before it hit the limiter.

Just wondering if that's stock or if I got lucky and the previous owner got a tune...

A tune shouldnt have increased the limit. Pretty sure the 3.0 makes all its power prior to redline. Anyway the limiter is probably close to 7k. I don't have the balls to take my 3.0 that high. Not trying to find a rod sticking out of the bottom of the pan.

All this talk about front and rear diffs, don't forget there are 3 differentials. Front, center torsen and rear. If auto, the trans itself uses ATF instead of gear oil so you have separate 4 volumes to drain/fill.

Test spot every substrate. No need to remove more clear coat then required. If it needs compounding then use one. If it doesnt then just use polish. Sometimes I mix polish with cutting pads or vice versa compounds with finishing pads as well as play with the machine speed. It all depends on the paint and your desired results. Either way, make sure you clay the paint first (if it needs it).

I'm also running the apikol intercooler. I did not have to remove any of the brackets. I slid the intercooler in from above carefully trying not to damage it. Then I bent the existing mounting brackets to fit. It holds nicely, but I did have to use a piece of vacuum hose and glue it to one of the screws on the bumper rail to prevent it from rubbing on the screw. It was a pretty easy job

Currently when I purchased the car the passenger side ballast was no longer working, I had a HID setup in the garage, and I drive a lot at night so I wasnt able to wait till the ballast came in the mail. I bypassed the factory ballast and tapped into the wiring harness with my aftermarket ballast and was able to have lights. Granted, as soon as my new ballast gets here I am going to bring it back to factory but would prefer some aftermarket housings. DO you know if I could do this same thing? Do they usually come with their own ballasts?

Typically aftermarket housings don't come with their own ballasts. You have to swap the OEM ones over or use aftermarket ones. Otherwise the cost of aftermarket headlights would be much higher.

Don't be cheap!!! Use OEM stuff....

No part is impervious to failure, whether it be OEM or aftermarket. But why not just go with OEM? There's a reason why it's OEM.

OEM

I am not trying to save money by buying inferior parts. It's just that there is a point where it's not worth paying extra just to buy the part from audi, when there are good OEM replacements. IE buying Lemforder control arms VS audi.
There were a few old threads that mentioned a few failed NTN parts. Even audi parts fail... Do most people here actually buy genuine or go with NTN in the TB kits? The price difference is pretty big and the canadian $ is really hurting.

What is the correct part number for ARP Main studs for the 06A?

USP's site said 204-5402 would fit.... per their vehicle specific thingy... but upon recieving I feel as though they're too short and Im stuck with HAVING to buy the IE Main studs.. Is this correct??

should I return mine to USP and purchase the IE stud kit?

I picked up a S4 spoiler couple years back and plan on doing the same thing. Only except I want to bolt it on. What I did was get a long piece of cardboard and set it against the bottom of the spoiler, cutting out holes where the bolts would be going through. I then carefully traced the spoiler and cut it to make a template to be placed on the trunk. On the template are the holes that the bolts will be going through and you can see where to drill into the trunk.

Haven't drilled anything yet but that's the idea that I was working with besides just using 3M tape.

Hmmm I didn't think of that. I may look into it. I have to pick up a set of bolts.

I just put on an Optibelt TB kit with NTN tensioner. Sure, the new stuff is better, but the "old" NTN have been used for years, so I don't think you can go wrong either way. I got my kit from germanoem.ca. Pretty reasonable prices for us Northern folk.

Drill off the head of the set screw. Remove rotor, vice grip the shank and remove.

So my sunroof started acting up just now when I got to work. Closes all the way, but as soon as it closes it opens all the way up. Switch is about 1 year old so hoping it's not that again. I barely use the sunroof so not sure what I should be checking first.

Think I might have lucked out..found a small piece of plastic broken which was under the arm that pops up when you open. Removed that and gave it a try and closed without issue. Just in time for the afternoon showers.

Several days ago I installed the new Litens tensioner. It was REALLY nice not having the hydraulic tensioner to pull the pin on... and possibly having to re-compress if you discover that you're off a tooth.
The new Litens tensioner comes with pictoral instructions only. It's SO EASY to install that you don't even need written instructions haha.

I'm looking at a set of Staggered wheels and have been searching the forums but it seems to be mixed feelings on what tires to run. The wheels are 18 x 8.5 front, 18 x 9.5 rear et 35. will running 235/40 R18 work all around or should I run larger in the back like 245 or even do 225f/235r? I've never ran staggered before and especially on a Quattro. thanks

Don't understand why you feel you need staggered but make sure diameters of all wheels are within factory tolerance of each other (2% ??) or else you may find yourself having wearing out the centre differential at a higher than normal rate.

I can get a deal on a new set of ADR m classics, but it's a staggered setup. My concern was the diff burning out. I see others run staggered so wasn't sure the right size tire to get the diameters the same.

It will be hard to get two tire sizes for a staggered setup that are the exact same diameter.

Just play around on a site like willtheyfit.com and see what tires you'd want to run.

I have one. The EGR and SAI system. I came from Volvos where the car had one or the other. It either had an egr system or a SAS (secondary air system). Both did the same thing.

As I'm getting myself familiar with everything on here, I've been trying to decipher the whole nest of hoses and vac lines behind the engine and read the vac system simplification diy. It seems the car has both an egr valve and a sas. Is that true? I'm looking for the egr block off plate as its referred to in the diy, but 034 lists it as a SAI block off plate. Just looking for some clarification.

there is only an SAI system with these B6 A4's. the SAI shoots air into the combi valve- which many ppl mistake as the EGR valve- which then shoots air into the exhaust stream in order to heat the cat converter. Emissions related and it only runs during certain conditions. you will notice in the winter that you don't have a high idle cold start. old guy/diagnosticator has the knowledge as to why.

They are the only vendor I came across who sells an entire kit with the new Litens tensioner. Otherwise you can piece together a kit.
A week ago I installed my Blauparts kit with the Litens tensioner. Their instructions kinda suck for the most part, but the Litens tensioner is pretty easy to install and comes with its own pictorial instructions that are easy enough to follow.

I used one of this guy's videos to replace a CV axle a while ago. I would probably use some hose clamps to stop the coolant from draining out completely like they do in this video though.

Sounds like the previous owner put on those wheels.
USP was distinguished by bumpers, door blades, interior silver fishscale trim and in 2005, the steering wheel was 3-spoke and had an S-line badge.

Has silver fish scale trim and a 3 spoke wheel, but doesn't say s line or anything. So probably not a USP, the just has an awesome trim package.
