View Full Version : Cats on cars...anyone with successful remedies?

10-12-2010, 01:53 PM
Walked out to my car this morning to see some nice muddy cat tracks all over the hood and roof [headbang]

Called animal control and they said if the cat is registered, they are allowed to roam.

They said my options are:

1. Rent a cat trap and put it next to the car. They will come pick up the cat. Then the owners can come pay to bail them out. But then the cat returns home and we are back to square one.

2. Use some sort of liquid that will keep cats away from the car. Anyone have any good ideas for this?

3. Use an ultrasonic sound deterring device.

Anyone ever dealt with this, or have suggestions on how to? Looking for something inexpensive, yet effective...if that's possible. Google gave me some good ideas, just wondering if anyone has been successful at this.

happens to me but i never really cared enough enough to even worry about it.

just try and find the owner and talk to them about it; suggest they get an electric fence or kill it or something

cats are cool man.

10-12-2010, 02:03 PM
I've spoken with the owner, there's really nothing they can do...cats are allowed to roam. There's no way of blocking off the area I park in.

I can always take the owner to small claims to repaint my hood...but I'm not really interested in that right now.

There are multiple cats that roam, so I need to be proactive in protecting my car.

Yeah, or get a dog.

10-12-2010, 02:04 PM
They only get on the car in the middle of the night...I need a remedy that will keep them off the car when I'm not around.

Anyone ever found something that works? There are plenty of liquids online, but I don't want to just spend a lot of money on things that aren't proven to work.

My neighbor's cat sleeps on top of my car at least once per week. Matted fur on the sunroof glass and muddy streaks down the windshield.

If it keeps him from being harassed by the other cats, I'm fine with it. He's a nice cat.

In fact, he helped install my FMIC.

that would be my idea but their claws could puncture it??
Moving cloth laid over at night would be least expensive choice for the moment though.
Pita though.

rumor has it crushed red pepper works. Pour the pepper around your car, and sprinkle on the spots where the cats sit. It may take a few days but eventually the cat will lick the pepper off of itself while on your car and eventually associate fire mouth with your car.

I read this in some home remedy book. I have not tried it yet.

Im not sure if you have access to a hose but at our family cottage the deer eat everything you plant. So we have this sprinkler thats hooked up to a motion sensor and it will do a full sweep pass if anything sets it off. 3 years later garden stays nice!

I say wax your hood so much that the cat can't stand on the hood without falling off, or you could call that girl of your dreams and get a house w/ garage w/her. ;)

Thanks for the advice Scotty.

I'm not spending hundreds of dollars to 3m my car...and I'm not washing my car every night so I can put some type of cloth/cover on it. Automated sprinkler/hose is an option, but I'll try some inexpensive things first.

Found out Ace hardware has 'Shake Away' granular cat repellent made from wolf/coyote urine. They said I should make a few balls out of nylons and place them around the car each night.

I'll give it a shot...and if that doesn't work, red pepper it is [;)]

No sprinklers or hoses you will just get water spots all over your paint. I would say car cover or some form of liquid designed to deter cats.

It will keep ALL ANIMALS AWAY.The problem with the car cover is that you have to wash your car every time you put it on. Otherwise the dirt can be rubbed right into the paint maybe making it worse then before. Also has anyone took a cover off a car after it rains? You get wet, and you don't want to put the cover back in the car or house while wet.

+1 on the water idea.

The neigborhood cats used to love my old car when I lived in FL. I first asked the owners (who had like 20 cats...no lie) to manage their cats as they were sitting on my car and scratching the paint. The "Cat Lady" basically told me it was my problem, not hers. So, I would patiently wait for the cats to sit on my car, quietly sneak up on them, and soak them w/ a giant cup of water...worked wonders. The cats learned and stopped sitting on my car.

Then I moved to a place w/ a garage and solved the problem 100% - I recommend the same!

DO NOT DO THE WATER!!! What do you think a cat does just before it has to run away from something? It puts it rear claws as deep as they can go before hauling ass the way they want to go. So do you really want that to happen to your paint. Try it out with a friends cat and a little spray can and see how it feels. Plus you are just going to water spot the car like crazy causing more damage to the car.

10-12-2010, 03:11 PM
Put out the cat trap and catch the cat. Have animal control pick it up. If the owners pay to get their cat back, repeat until they either keep their cat inside all the time or stop paying to bail their cat out.

So does this mean you'll be spraying wolf/coyote urine all over your car? Wouldn't that leave some nasty spots? Isn't urine acidic?

No, it's a granular cat repellent. Which means it's like salt...you pour some around the car, or make small balls of it out of stockings and set them wherever you want.

It will be raining soon and cats will take shelter. Until then toss a soft blanket over your hood and roof if you are that worried about it. I sincerely hope you do not set a trap and make your neighbors retrieve their pet from animal control... Why give them a reason to hate you? And small claims court... good luck with that [rolleyes]

Used to live in a place where my neighbor had 3 outside cats. One neighbor bought a Chevy Impala and I bought the Audi. This cat guy loved his cats and had a POS car and work truck. He didn't care if the cats were on our cars. The Impala guy parked his car in the garage, but it was a shared garage and the cat guy left his door cracked for the cats to come and go. So the Impala guy put a quilt over his car while in the garage and it worked. He had a 9-5 job, so when he got home from work, he just put the car in the garage.
I had a busier schedule, so I couldn't park my car in the garage. I tried the water spray, once and only once; the cats just freak out and scratch the paint all the way off your car.
The car cover does work. Don't buy a cheap one. I didn't spend a ton of money, but I got one with a soft lining, breathable, and water didn't penetrate it. Worked wonders, and it didn't scratch the paint or work dirt into the clear coat.

Bottom line is cat owners don't give a shit about where their cats sleep. This guy was a good friend, but this always got on both of our nerves cause he didn't give 2 shits about it. I can't stand cat tracks or hair on my car. I really did think about popping the cats with a BB gun, but I didn't have one.
I say try the repellent and see if it works. Don't even bother going to the owners, they won't care or help. If not, see about the car cover. No matter what anyone says, as long as you get a good one, IMO problem solved.

there are a number of products on the market to repel unwanted animals. mainly used for gardens and stuff but like you said u can fill up nylons with the pellets and put them around your car and it should work fine. your local pet shop should have some. two i can think of off the top of my head are called "REPEL" and "KEEPOFF!"

I have exactly the same problem and found this thing call a Scat Mat. It is an electric mat that you put on a surface you want the animal to keep off. It shocks them gently when they get on it. After a while they should learn not do it after a while. I haven't had a chance to try it yet though.

Let me tell you how I took care of the neighbors "outside" cats. I went outside after waxing all 3 of my cars. and found muddy prints on all... so I called the cat over an popped my trunk... I tapped on the trunk and he jumped in an I slammed it shut. Then I drove 3 towns over an let him out... then I did the same to the other one. Then one of them made it back so I found it a new home. Now no more paw prints. They used to jump on my cars on a daily basis. Scratched the fresh paint on the monte.

Because someone killing a cat (which would probably just be a fine and at most, 30 days in jail) would be worth killing their kid and going to prison for life.

My neighborhood cat developed a fondness for the (new) interior (smell) of my less than a year old Corvette Z06. How did I find this out? Memorial day weekend - just got done waxing the Vette and left the windows open while parked in my garage. Started to wax the Audi, and I had left one of the garage doors open. I go inside to get more detailing towels. I come out to find this cat sitting on my center console in the Vette. I chase him out and continue, thinking that spooking him will keep him from thinking twice - but nooooooooooo... later that day I turn my back and he returned! [mad] From then on, I never left the windows open with a door up when it was parked in the garage. Fortunately, he didn't leave his "mark" or scratches on the door frame... whew!
