So i just picked up my S5 Cab yesterday and i noticed something today that really kind of shocked me. While in Manual mode and ADS setting set to Dynamic the gears changed on their own while getting close to the redline.
I was under the impression that this Dual Clutch transmission would not shift for you unless you actually shift yourself. In manual mode that is...
This is really surprising and annoying.
Is there a setting that i missed or is something i can do for it not to shift on it's own?
I was under impression that this was like a true manual transmission without the 3rd pedal...

Obviously someone else will be able to give the real answer but I am wondering if the Audi has an extra engagement on the gas pedal like the BMWs do. When you press the gas all the way down without pushing the engagement point then you have total control but if you go beyond it then it shifts up and down for you once it hits the redline.

I asked the same question my audi dealer when i tested the Golf V GTI DSG, he said its there because of some safety reason, just like it will shift down if you are on low revs. Ive heard ruomors though that you can flash the S.Tronic/DSG to behave in a different way.

Is your car 2 days old, or was it in for service? There may be a software over ride for the first few kms to protect the new engine from slightly sub redline rpms. In the interest of going fast though, the peak power is actually quite a bit below redline in this 3.0 litre. With the close spacing of the 7 speed and the peak power so low, shifting at 6500 vs. 7000 is likely faster. Except for 0 to 60s, where an extra shift can be omitted with the extra revs in 2nd gear.

manual mode is only to a point...

the s-tronic is no different from the regular tip when it comes to auto shift points unfortunately. it will also auto downshift on you (if you drop below 1100rpm I believe)

If you are manually shifting and are at full throttle and approaching red line, it will shift for you to the next gear. It will not go to redline and cut the gas as in most other vehicles. Try shifting a little earlier as all the torque and power is significantly before redline. [:)]

Wow that majorly blows...

Not really. If you think about it if you have a manual you need to downshift or your car stalls, so how often do you have your manual under 1100 rpm. Also how often do you redline your car in manual anyways. Not often because that is not where your power band is anyways.

In all that is practical, most of the posts here are correct in terms of the S-Tronic; there is no need to shift at the redline due to peak power RPMs being less than that (omitting 0-60), and the auto-downshifts less than 1500rpm would be normal as in a 6 speed you wont be spending much time there anyways.

That being said, there's the fun-factor to consider and too must automation taking the fun out of the car in some ways. In a sports car or a sports sedan as quick as the S4, while at times tedious, the manual transmission gives a certain satisfaction with rev matching and double clutching (still fun but totally unnecessary these days due to syncros) and quick upshifts. By taking that true manual option away in the S-Tronic I can definitely see how it would be annoying, it would frustrate me too.
