Yea, SC is there on top, the IC is down very low under the front bumper. Keith said up this post further it's an OEM after cooler - for what I am not sure.
First pic in this thread you can see the IC under the bumper dead center - it's shiny silver as opposed to painted black like the radiator/condensors are.

*** Edit - you can also see it in the 4th pic down from the first set in this thread, right under the aluminum bumper piece.

there are 2 aftercoolers I think. I call them aftercoolers because its what the water recircs through for the actual intercoolers which are in the intake manifold assembly.
intercooler, the cores in the manifold the water flows through, cools the charge air.
aftercooler, the 2 typical intercooler looking guys behind the bumper, cools the water after its cooled the intercoolers which cool the internal air.
the primary aftercooler is the long fmic looking unit that's removed in that pic but referenced in earlier pics.
what he has circled is the secondary or auxiliary aftercooler I think. It could be an auxiliary radiator but I'm pretty sure I traced the lines to the intake manifold intercooler location although it was a cursory glance.
Wow, they are using liquid cooled coolers. This beast will make huge hp in the winter then. To get this right, the intercooler is in the plenum, and cooled by coolant. That then gives up the heat to 2 big rads in the front of the car, which are cooled via air flow?
Very good system, if that is what they are using. The rads are more of a heatsink, than aftercooler, but whatever. minus 10 degrees airflow in the winter could cool the coolant huge. It would freeze water.
The intercoolers performance/ charge cool, should be much better than an air to air type. Think water cooled computer chip vs. air cooled. There is lots of cooling without a massive pressure drop this way also.

I'm pretty curious now myself L0U...
If they have a dual cooling system, that will be very efficient at removal of heat from the charged air, and as you say help tons in the power department.

Keith@APR

Nope, but its definitely an auxiliary cooler for either the coolant system or the intercooler system depending on how you look at it.
NWS4Guy
10-30-2009, 10:42 AM
Much thanks for the daigrams!
I'm still curious as to what that little aftercooler does, I see that the oil cooler is built in up near the SC and ties into the engine coolant lines, so it's not a seperate system to cool that.
I'm happy with this design which keeps the intercooler in a seperate loop from then engine coolant, but they do share the same overflow in order to hot have 2 totally seperate systems.
I can see how under stop and go, the SC being on top of the engine will get a lot of heat soak from the block itself, sitting on top of everything, but at speed, this should't be an issue with lots of moving air through the engine bay. Keeping these 2 apart save for the overflow tank should make the cooling efficiency as good as can be had by this system.
Mounting a larger intercooler rad, or installing a pump that increases flow should net some gains, especially in a car chipped pushing full boost. Sharing the same overflow means both loops are antifreeze. No real mixing will occur though, other than as the coolant swels from increased temperaure, it will go to the reservoir, then back into the loop once cooled(shrinks)
Intercooler rad gets the cool air before the engine rad.
The next time you guys dyno the car, put a big fan in front of thay heat exchanger. :) or is that were the gains came from. (also means the car makes more power at speed vs. sitting on the rollers)
Ivan01
10-30-2009, 02:16 PM
wow so we got auxiliary(helping front cooler) getting cold to r+l side cooler to cool down SC I'am gessing. And sends hot back to auxiliary? Loosing my mind. Any ways that supercharger pulley looks to big. What is it 9 or 10?
JRMSLINEA4
10-30-2009, 04:15 PM
A smaller pulley will allow the s/c to produce more boost if it can be removed for a smaller one. [evilsmile]

Its to clear the steering rack so it may have to stay.
that looks about 3.5 to 1. or at 7000rpm, the blower is turning 24,500 rpm. going a wee bit smaller on the upper blower pulley gets you to 4 to 1 pretty quick. The crank pulley can't go bigger or the belt will be to kinked. For the 1500 bucks I'd rather bolt 1 size bigger roots of the same type.

seems that the first run the i/c was cooler, and performance dropped as it got hotter and hotter(heated that i/c rad coolant). was the 4rth run made with a bit of an interval where things cooled a bit extra?

They weren't back to back or anything. I drove out to lunch and when the road looked flat, I hit a power pull.
Some were after cruising at 65 and then slowing down for the pull, some were leaving from a stop after sitting for a few.
I never did the coast down stuff to see what estimated crank was, I could do that this weekend and maybe get some datalogs too.
The 0-60's were collected somewhat back to back on the same flat spot of road but I would have to drive for half a mile after each run to turn around and I would take it slow to let some air flow over the aftercoolers.

I meant putting a smaller pulley on the "snout" of the supercharger not the crankshaft pulley.

Not needed on this car. Clutch slipped at 4200 anyways.[headbang]
I was launching around 3200-3400 with a feather. The 4.87 was with a little wheel slip up front, very nice.[evilsmile]
If I had a better clutch and put some air in the tires I feel a 4.6.
No matter what I did, it still bogged out of the hole.

I ordered the output's on the graph from lowest to highest times. That's not the order he ran.
I think the order was 5.05, 5.15, 5.08 4.87. I'll check on my laptop later on.

The darkest they had... it was tough to see out of the car and was only tinted because the car was not fully race prepped internally for the car show. I can't imagine tinting a car that much and still being able to drive it during the day, let alone the night.

I see there's no sport diff on this vehicle, as a newbie - help me understand why this was left out for such a car? I am one of the few who ended up w/o this option (long story, and I'm punishing myself over it mentally even though I'm not terribly unhappy with the amount of understeer in my car) I'm considering some coilovers and sways because I would like less body roll.

I'll let Keith or Arin speak on whatever detail they can to this, but they didn't get the car with one because they built their own super-secret one, which apparently does more than the stock one can, likely more track focused version if I had to guess. Someone asked about this on another thread of theirs and this was the basic answer.

So how did you fill in the space where the sunroof was previously located? Are there any aftermarket
filler plates available to fill the space where the old sunroof was? Unfortunately the 2010/2011 S4 can
only be ordered with a sunroof.
How much does the sunroof assembly weight?
cool project car, by the way.

That makes more sense, thanks. Alright then...Keith, Arin, I'll take 1 Super-Secret Sport Diff please.
I'll take one as well. Do you have a lay-a-way plan? lol

Again? lol [;)]
A: Main crankshaft pulley
B: Power Steering servo pump pulley
C: A/C compressor pulley
D: Water pump pulley
E: Just a pulley to re-route the direction of the belt
F: Supercharger pulley
G: Alternator pulley
H: Tensioning pulley
Did you read the thread, there is a nice diagram of them all on page 2 along with an explaination of the coolant loop for the supercharger's air to liquid cooling.

yeah I'm still piecing it all together in my head.
does a racecar need an air conditioner? (guess it depends on the driver!) why not rip that out for one less parasite?

This is the build thread, the car was painted up with it's racing setup for an unveiling before they ever got to the car. Read the entire thread, you will see this is where they took pics as they were removing the engine for the first time ever, parting out all the interior so they could gut it to loose weight and add the roll cage. The A/C was certainly removed, along with some other things like the stock exhaust from the headers all the way back, stock intake - gone, etc, etc.

Arin's last comment on an update request was something like "I can take a pic of it sitting out in the parking lot still looking stock if you want."

I saw this car smashed when I got my car flashed today. Sad sad.
On another note, I got to see someone's (the boss?) car today with the some big ole brakes, intake, prototype pulley, and the new cooling system (didn't take pics and I'm not a car guy so I won't be of much help) being put on. Pretty sweet set up they have there, and I was very grateful they let me bring my car in for the flash with all the shows they have coming up.
