So I know jack sh!t about car audio. I've played music my whole life so I NEED really good sound quality and my current setup blows. I have the stock Bose but its tired. I've looked online at different setups but all seem to say that hooking up speakers to the bose system is really hard and the only thing you can buy for the system without totally retrofitting it is 4.5in speakers in the front. So my question to you audio gurus is what should I get?
I want good sound quality more than anything. I also need a sub that I can take out relatively easily when I need the extra trunk space. What do you guys think?
This is for a 2000 S4.

What's your price range? What type of music do you listen to? Do you need advanced multimedia capabilities?

oops sorry meant to put that in.
Under a grand preferably but could go slightly over that, I listen to all kinds of music but mostly rock with alittle rap, and I use an ipod with my system at current. I've always wanted to have a touchscreen where my radio controls are now but they seem really expensive so I've kinda ruled that out.

Before you spend your money. Make sure to adjust the secret Bose Equalizer settings. The change will blow your mind. I did it to my B5 and swapped out the front speakers ( just cause they were blown) for the infinity 4022i reference speakers and the car sounded amazing, abetter than my B6 bose system. People often asked if I had subs in the trunk pf my B5. The secret settings really make a difference. If you dont know what im talking about, just search the forums, its all over the place. Good luck!

I've already adjusted them. My speakers are simply blown or worn out. could I just replace my stock bose with oem bose or new bose? Could I add a sub onto that and have it sound good? I want the best sound quality I can get.

So from your post im taking this as a best setup for you:
New Headunit
5-Channel Amp (or a 4 for the interiors and separate for sub)
All new interior speakers
Simple sub in box that can be taken out, small
Correct?
To keep in your price range id suggest a Pioneer headunit, Alpine speakers, Alpine Type-R subwoofer, and maybe Kenwood amps. All pretty good stuff for the money.

I have a B5 A4 and I will post the results of the setup I am working on now.
I purchased 2 sets of MB Quart PVI213 5.25" seperates that can also be used as coax. I bought S4 rear door panels so I could put speakers in the rear doors. I will run one pair of the PVI213's in the rear doors as coax for fill. I bought adapters (on eBay) for the front doors that allow for 5.25" speakers. I will run the PVI213's in the front door as seperates with the tweeter in the stock location. The 4 speakers will be powered by the Clarion HU that the original owner of the car had installed. Next I will buy a small mono amp for subs that I plan to mount in the rear deck. I already had a pair of subs that I had bought for another project but didn't use. They are Elemental Designs 7Kv.2 6.5" subs.
Not a crazy system by any means but I think I should have some great sound for very little investment.
The PVI213's ($150/pr.)
The 7Kv.2 (got on a BOGO sale I think I paid about $80.00)
Door Panels ($150.00)
