There was a debate brewing in the B6/7 S4/RS4 forum about these two cars. Both cost about $50,000.

RS4s are much less than $50K now. There is a local repo for sale if anyone is interested. Probably low 40s. But they are a B7 and outdated body style. I can't imagine spending $50K for an outdate, NA motor car. With just software the larger, and more modern B8 S4 will outrun the RS4.

not sure if you were only trying to say that the b7 is no longer the "newest" body style, but...

the b7 is not even close to looking "outdated." sure, it's no longer the newest body style, but it still looks great, and very brotherly to the b8 since they share the grille. throw fly's leds on the b7 and some might think it looks better than a b8.

the b5 however, looks "outdated."

hell, i still think the b6 looks great...especially the usp a4 or s4.

You had to go there, huh? [down]

We're still faster though [race]

I'd go with the B8 S4. On account of mpg and the 3G mmi.

But even as a B8 owner, I concede that the B7 RS4 is one hot sheetmetal, with a growl.

B8 S4 3.0T all day long... chipped, with intake, exhaust and upgraded fuel systems... you've got way more power than an NA B7 RS4.

Funny thing, I think the B5 S4 done right is as hot as any car on the road (I miss mine). I thinkt he B6 looked old the day it came out, and the B7 is still nice, but getting long in the tooth. I do love the laser red RS4 I see at Subway every day. Can't argue with that—except it isn't worth $50K for a 3 year old body style. :)

cant go wrong with any of them - with the right amount of mods any one of them can beat the other

The b8 s4 situation reminds me of the e9x 335 vs e46 m3 in 2007.
Chipped 335 are faster but overall the (outdated to some m3) was a better car.
I got the 135 instead of the e46 m3. I regret my decision everyday. The s4 has more potential but it's not the same drive at all. Ill take the slower high reving , smaller RS4 over the S4.

Bodystyle has nothing to do with the car potential. The B5, UR-Q, RS2, UR S4 C5 RS6 are damn nice cars...hell my buddy just paid 70K to import a B5 RS4. The S4 is 335I competition so it's not that much of a special car and its' not a Quattro Gmbh car. However it's the best daily driver you can get.

You asked peoples opinion Saki, and you got one you didn't like.... I also agree that the RS4 is still and always will be a superior car to the B8 S4. Looks, high revving V8, and an interior to kill for. Unlike the B8 S4, the RS4 will always be a "special" model, and was developed by Quattro GmbH. Couple this with limited production runs and you have a very sought after collectors car. To this day I have still never seen another RS driving while I was in mine.
My 2 cents.

BTW, Im not knocking the B8 as it's a great car, but the RS has that special formula the B8 just doesnt possess.

I'm a huge fan of the B7 RS4 style, but my main gripe was being in it. After sitting in an S5, the interior of the RS4 felt dated. While I loved the way the RS4 drove compared to the S5, I felt the new S4 was a happy compromise with both.

Guess it all depends on where you drive. There is a silver one and a blue one in the garage at my building at work every day.

LOL troll....easy there...Ive been a member of this board since 2006 and had my a4. Why would I post there...I hate bimmers go read my other post I cant wait to get rid of my car...Im getting a B7 RS4...thanks for calling me a troll...Ive been around VAG for a long time, mk4 jetta,mk2,mk5,BT A4...thanks ...and coming soon to replace my POS bimmer with a b7 rs4...
you think that im puting down the b8 s4 do you have reading problems...Its the jack of all trade cars but master of none....like the 335 expect that I would get the s4 since I hate bmw cars, dealership and clueless owners that worry more about the badge then the car...honestly Im fuming....

Ive never put down the S4...WTF In fact I was 1 day close from getting a B7 S4 last year to replace my A4...whats wrong with you...The S4 is 335 competition while the RS4 is meant to go against M3s, C63s....Like I said my 135 is faster then a B7 RS4 way faster but I dont care I like the RS4 better then my current car. A chipped 335 is faster then an M3 but Ill take the m3 over it...to each his own I like high reving, I dont care about being the new kid on the block and supposedly drive a dated B7...My RS4 will be a keeper along a nice 1984 UR Q.....yes I like dated cars

I repeat the B8 S4 is the ultimate daily driver while the RS4 is more track oriented.......still calling me a troll? Do you call a stage 3 S4 a dated shitbox or a C5 RS6 an old clunker if so you have no appreciation of cars. The new s4 was made to save weight, improve fuel efficiency, lowering the price, improved power band...Sports car like the new RS5 are made in order to get more performance more power I dont see Audi bragging about fuel consumption nor does Mercedes with AMG models, nor Lexus with the IS-F.

Sorry I dont piss contest about owning the newest thing,MMI, 6CD changer,NAV, LED or the newest bodystyle. Everytime I drive by an RS4 or B7 S4 I shut down the radio roll down my window and listen to the exhaust note.

Saikimoto on a side note listen to that(I do it everyday I swear)Thats what Audi all about

I'm not detracting from your decision, but seriously, the new S4 with ADS and Sport Diff is a way better track animal than the RS4.

I've driven the RS4 in anger, and recently had a chance to put the S4 around Kyalami race track - an F1 and superbike track for the record.

S4's weight distribution and chassis behaviour coupled with technological breakthroughs in vehicle dynamics > RS4.

RS4 is still respected in my books. Enjoy it !

What the hell, I'll add my 2 cents since I just took the B8 S4 for a test drive today. I was "forced" to drive the DSG since there were no 6 speeds at our local Stealership. I was extremely impressed with the car and am certain I would be very happy owning it. The handling and general feel of the car on the road is definitely superior to my S4 (thanks to new amazing technology of ADS). That said, the exhaust note is a lunchbag compared to the RS4 or even my B7. Also, there's something to be said about the ability to put power down beyond 6,000 rpm. Although I voted for the B8 S4 in that poll, I'm now waivering ... I'm in the process of selling my car and may end up with an RS4 due to my addiction with the sound and refinement of the last V8's that Audi will offer. For resale value the used car should hold its value well ... hell I may end up with an S5 as I dont need the space and nobody I know has a problem with the lines of that car [hail]

edit: there's no way to get a B8 S4 up here for less than 5k+ more than the RS4 or S5 [:(]

yes the weight as per below. The S4 should outhandle the rs4...just needs that 100 hp chip to make the straight shorter.

50 lbs difference I think. Pretty sure the comment was more related to weight distribution. The B8 has a 55/45 split but it feels very neutral when driving it. I havent driven the RS4 but its 58/42 ...

explain?

$52500+about 6000 in great options+1500 deliver+pst/gst = $67,800

used RS4s are $60,000+pst/gst minimum (that I've found)...same price after tax.

If you have a line on cheap RS4s, let me know...we'll get a group rate[:D]

the numbers don't bear this out. The RS4 has yet to be beaten by the B8 S4 on ANY TRACK ON EARTH.

The Nurburgring is the world's ultimate track and truly the benchmark for performance testing a car's sporting nature. So far, only one sedan has ever beaten the RS4 ...and that was the Porsche Panamera Turbo. The B8 S4 will do well to break 8:20...while the RS4 was 7 mins 59 seconds.

Here's a couple track time comparisons...not very close considering both are pretty short tracks.

RS4 1.3 second faster on the Hockenheim Short Course (http://www.fastestlaps.com/track7.html)

RS4 0.5 seconds faster on Autozeitung test track (http://www.fastestlaps.com/track24.html)

not so sure...

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=309420

The RS4 is about 5-8% better than the B6/7 S4...thanks to direct injection. That means the RS4 computer2 average would be in the 18mpg range. The B8 S4 isn't faring too well at beating that by much...or at all.

Further, consider this math

driving 1500 miles per month at 20 mpg vs. 17 mpg with $2.75 gasoline only saves you a grand total of $36/month!

We're talking about $50,000 cars here...$36/month isn't nearly enough to move the needle.

An RS4 from south of the 49th can be purchased for mid to high 40's. After paying the exchange, 6.1% duty and 13% tax you've got one for say, $60k

With a software upgrade to make the straights shorter. I should have added that.

In cornering the S4 is dynamically superior to the RS4 in every possible way, in stock form.

Go try it out sometime. On a track. Let me know.

Unless cars are tracked on the same day, with the same rubber, conditions and driver, I'm not a fan of internet race statistics. Same goes for a dyno.

On a track like the 'ring rubber alone can make a world of a difference, as can the driver. Or would you dispute that ?

Give the S4 a slight power bump in the kw/hp department and it's game over for the RS4.
