28-29 MPG?
Was this measurement taken going down a hill with a brisk tail wind? I barely break 25 and that is pussy footing around 65mph on a flat highway....
Am I pissed? No... The car is rad who cares.
How do they get away with that claim? How's everyone elses MPG?

How many miles do you have? As the engine breaks in your MPG will increase. That being said, sometimes the figures they report are a bit optimistic though...

you are aware the EPA mileage test is pretty much garbage right? thus the infamous "your mileage may vary"
but like the other guy said, your mileage will probably improve as time goes on and the engine gets broken in.

Check this out! The actual test methodology. It's not just the S4. I just got out of a TDI Jetta Sportwagon. Tough to make the number on that over 60MPH. You have to follow the link to see ALL the tests that are done. City, Highway, "High" Speed, Air Con, Cold Temp.

same reasoning the Volt 'gets 140 mpg' despite that meaning its getting 110 percent combustion efficency. the test is flawed, but like a dyno, its standardized to let you draw conclusions based on that standard. turbo cars will always get under while NA cars get over. my moms golf gets 5mpg more in city and highway. my s4 cant get a combined milage over 21mpg.

it got 26mpg driving about 55mph over a 300 mile trip on highway and rural areas.
was loaded down too...
to get these numbers, you have to be very disciplined but there definitely achievable.
my economy improved as the trip went on as i have less than a 1000 miles on it.

Reprogramming will allow you to pick up nearly 5mpg (in theory) but a heavy foot (in reality) will negate it.
the lcd readout can be off a bit too. and the first 3 tanks of fuel are brutal as the engine breaks in and frictional loses get better. 30 mpg will be achievable, I have no doubts. I managed 6.3 litres per 100k in my A3, and its rated for worse than that.

I'm not sure what you were doing but I've seen 24mpg in my B6 S4 doing 60mph over a five hour stretch. The new one should be at least 27-28.
My guess is the car needs to be broken in or you got crap gas or were going faster than you thought :)

How's everyone elses MPG?
Um.. simply stated, not great, and no where near 26-28. We'll see as time goes on... I'm pushing 21-23 combined highway/city but only driven about 600 miles.

You guys are crazy if you think you are going to get fantastic mileage on a brand new car. Wait 2000 miles at least.
Was the MPG really the deciding factor when you bought the car? Put it all into perspective.

Also take into consideration that your probably driving a bit more spirited than normal due to the excitement of the new car.
...and if you're not...why aren't you?!? :)

I only get about 21.5 max if I go on the freeway like 75%. When I drive in the city a lot...i get about 11-13mpg. I usually change gear at 3k rpm, no more than 4k and I already have like 700 miles on the car so my average is like 15-18 per gallon. A full tank can only go about 245-270.

My S4 Avant has just 5K and am getting an average between 26. - 32 and that's on runs of approx 120 miles and pushing up to 140mph occassionally and back to steady 75 mph . Ur S4 still needs run in. Stick with it.

Want great gas mileage, take it from this guy - i know he does not drive an S4, but you can certainly pick up pointers from him on how to stretch your gas mileage to the max.
