treating a car lie a baby is the main priority when its brand new.

just remember your car is a baby and way too young to be under so much stress at an early age.

I floored my A4 when I got it while still below 500km. I've heard different people telling me different things about the proper way to break-in an engine. I chose the more fun way. Hopefully no ill effects - definitely none so far **knock on wood**. I definitely didn't do it all the time, just when it fancied me.

Gunning it a few times during the break in should be ok IMO. I wouldn't recommend running it "hard" but nothing wrong with giving it a few pulls every now and then :)

I'm not going to say you're blowing smoke, but I find it very hard to believe that the M3 was blown away. The M3 is listed at 4.8 0-60, although many mags posted quicker times. It is also RWD and about 500lbs lighter than the S4, so if you really blew it away, the driver either wasn't pushing it or lacked in the launch/shifting department. BTW, I used to have an E46 with SMG and it was a quick car.

Get over it already.

E46 M3's stock are not that quick.

My 8P S3 with simply stage 1 software could easily beat an E46 M3 from the line.

With stage 2 upgrades and mods, it was murder on the dance floor. Lightpole size gaps. Time and time again.

A stock B8 S4 will smack an E46 M3 for breakfast and have spare time to visit starbucks for a latte machiato.

A tuned B8 S4 will be munching E90/E92 M3's.

Watch this space.

A tuned S4 should match evenly with a e90/e92 M3 much like a 335i.
A tuned S4 should be very close to a tuned 335i.
A stock S4 should beat the e46 by only 1-2 car lenghts up to 100.

Pretty much so.

Although, with the better-than-quoted times I'm starting to hear about for the S4 S-Tronic, I suspect that with modifed software only, the S4 will be somewhat stronger than a software only tuned 335i. (all things being equal).

Not trying to, I was simply pointing at the facts. On paper, the M3 does 0-60 in 4.8, has 33 more hp, is lighter by about 500 lbs, which is a lot and is also RWD. Now, to me, when someone says that one car blows away the other, means that there was vast difference in acceleration between the two, and the S4 was able to outperform the M3 by 5 or 10 car lengths. Don't get me wrong, I really wish the S4 would be super quick, since I'm thinking about purchasing one over a used RS4, but considering its power to weight ratio and other specs, I find it very hard to believe.

for some reason i ended up in this thread and its funny.

a new S4 will walk an e46.. a stg1 B5 s4 will walk an E46... e46's are just plain slow in stock form. and if you dont think they are then you will cream your jeans in a new M3. considering they are worlds quicker.

if a new S4 doesnt go better than 14s(e46 m3) than i dont know who in their right mind would buy one

now...

cars dont have to be babied when they are new. they arent babies... nuff said.

Nice..... E46 M3 was really quick at it's time but this shows how time flies and techology evolves to make a motor efficient. On paper, S4 should lose as it has the same exact hp but more weight. I think the torque and a better engine with fewer hp losses are making it quick.

BTW OP, more details on the Jetta please.

No disrespect to the M3, I love the E46... But there is not a 500lb difference between the E46 M3 and the B8 S4. The B8 S4 curb weight 3637 and the E46 M3 is 3450. Advantage to the M3, but not as big as originally stated.

The M3 was about 3400 lbs and according to C&D the S4 is around 3900. I looked on Audi's site, but no weight info there.
Quote from C&D:
"The supercharger will make the V-6 weigh about the same as the V-8 overall. Add in the requisite safety and luxury features that every new model gets, and it’s a wash. Expect Audi to claim a nominal weight reduction of only 20–100 pounds for the new model, putting it at about 3900 pounds"

That's faster than RS4 and almost supercar territory- very doubtful a stock S4 can achieve this.

The M3 has 33 more horsepower? From what I remember there are both 333 hp. Maybe you're thinking of the 335 with 300 hp?

The reality is the new S4 is fcuking quick for it's power and weight.

The engine power is probably underated, just like the 335i.

Dyno's will tell.

However, all of this is really moot, as today, engine kw/hp is only as good as the ability of the drivetrain to translate that power through the wheels and onto the road.

The S4 appears to do this exceptionally well. Therein lies the difference.

A vehicle cannot be judged ito. performance by a mere hp rating. Look at the technology as a package, then be the judge.

B8 S4 - it's a marvelous tribute to audi design and vorsprung and "clever" power.

The curb weight shows after you "Build" an Audi. The B6/B7 S4 weighed in around 3850, RS4 was over 3900.

but the engine is already broke in from factory you only have to drive like you will do every day

I like how the Audi PR rep explains it in this video. He basically says the new S4 is meant to compete with the 335i and actually says it is just a variation / upgrade to the 2.0T A4. It seems Audi's "S" cars are not meant to compete directly with BMW's "M" cars anymore. They leave that to the RS models I think. (probably a smart move)

He talks about it in the beginning of the video and then again at 11:15

Been like that for awhile now, and now more than ever with the way the prices and options are matching up. It's a big reason why the A4 S line looks so similar to an S4. They come off a normal production line, unlike Audi's very special RS line, similar to the "M" or "AMG" from BMW and Mercedes.

Definitely dont want to baby, but the manual gives some general guidelines which I have more or less followed:

For the first 1000 km, I drove mine pretty freely but kept rpms under 5000 and was easy on the brakes and clutch....

Between 1000-1500 km I have been taking it up to redline more frequently and have been more aggressive on launches and braking...

After that...anything goes!
