I was a little worried but it works out fine. It has a good mix of black and red to keep it from being obnoxious.

Congrats on your new S4! It looks great.

I have a quick question for you. I drove one yesterday, ice silver, prem plus, nav, s-tronic. I loved every aspect of the car, except for the s-tronic tranny. Granted, this car was so new they pulled it out of the showroom for me to drive it, but there was a huge downshift lag when I went to accelerate hard. I did this several times from 40-60 mph, and it really seemed to take forever to downshift (in full auto mode). Have you noticed this? The salesman mentioned that the transmission will learn my driving style and will adapt, but I am unsure.

My only other concern was the lack of a memory seat on a 52K car. It is a must have for me and my wife, so I guess I will have to get the prestige.

I do alot of city driving. Also every other car i have owned has been a standard. After driving a dct i figured it would be the best of both worlds. this thing shifts fast, really fast. i have not noticed any down shifting lag. i miss having a clutch but i really love the lighting fast shifts.

this car has memory seats i dont know why that one didnt. my car also has drive select so im not sure if that has anything to do with the shifting (in addition to the s mode it enters)

I've seen one in person today and I must admit that it really looks much better in person than it does on photos. I have a dilemma now of whether to go with a nice 08 CPO RS4 or order one of these bad boys, but considering problems reported by many RS4 owners (carbon buildup and DRC leaks), I'm leaning toward the S4.

It's still worth it with those problems...... Plus the DRC issue is being resolved, all us RS4 boys are waiting for is a factory carbon plan, which supposedly is in the works.

Yea I have noticed that a bit. It was more pronounced when I first got the car but now it is allot smoother.

This isn't an automatic and the stonic transmission is completely different. There is no torque converter. The shifts are going to feel different i know... I really haven't driven anything except for a TT with Stronic and it does feel the same.

I mean I guess you could get all black, but if you want red, it's only two tone red/black. No solid red from what I could tell on Audi's website.

Supercharging a B6/B7 S4 to make it faster than a B8 S4? Sounds like you just don't want to like the B8.

I have nothing against the B8s, but super charging a V8 can be a monster (400whp) even though they are super expensive (almost $12,000 installed). I am sure if you chip the B8 S4s you can get a tremendous power gain as well. I am somehow disappointed with the performance of supercharged V6, should of been a higher number. [:)]

But B8 S4s really killed the price on the B6/B7s...... [=(]

Regardless, the statement B8 S4s pulls almost just as hard as B7 RS4s is very questionable.

IAPharmer
08-28-2009, 01:55 PM
Why is it so hard to believe that it does not pull as hard as the V8? The Supercharged 6 only give up 7HP and it makes more torque at a lower RPM than the V8, so It should pull harder and be just as fast!

Supercharging a B6/B7 S4 to make it faster than a B8 S4? Sounds like you just don't want to like the B8.

a supercharged B6/7 S4 produces about 500 horsepower...not really comparable even if B8 is chipped. I think ABT is just looking at 'how to go fast without spending $50,000 for a B8 S4'. A used B6 for $20,000+10,000 for a supercharger kit is pretty exciting. There are two that are putting down to 550-600hp here on Audizine alone.

as for those RS4 comments/comparisons, I'm sure the B8 feels pretty close...statistically has tested pretty close at the low end, but at the high end the RS4 will walk away.

anyone who said the RS4 engine #s are over-rated/stated really ought to go read a comparison test between it and the E92 M3...both have similar HP numbers...yet they are neck and neck in 0-60mph, 1/4 mile etc. All this despite the AWD drivetrain loss in the RS4 vs. the RWD M3.

In a straight line the B6/B7 RS4 will be faster but put it on a track and the new B8 S4 will give it a run for it's money or be faster depending on the track. The B6/B7 handling is just not comparable to the new B8.

Sport Auto took the B8 S4 to the Hockenheim ring and the times are...

B7 RS4 Avant - 1:17.3
B8 S4 - 1:16.7
B7 RS4 Sedan (WITH R COMPOUND TIRES) - 1:15.4

reguarding the stronic complaint a page back..

Yes, at creep speeds it does not exibit the smoothness of a torque converter. Basically the clutch is enguaged or not, and it doesn't slip well to creep slower than the car will idle. You can make a standard car behave the same by inching forward with the clutch enguaged, it will buck as it idles along. A clutch pedal would solve all of the first gear creeping woes. Once you are used to it, you can drive differently to lessen the efects. Just remember it drives like a standard more than an auto from a standstill, or creep. The clutch gets confused with the brake too. In an auto it slips and the brake can be applied to make it creep slower....in dsg, when you brake the clutch disenguages so you slow, then when you lift it enguages and chugs forward, since your speed is too slow for it to idle along in first gear it bucks like a manual about to stall out...which in a manual...you'd push in the pedal and rev it, and slip the clutch. I love my dsg for all of its shortcomings!

This is all interesting stuff. It seems to me one of the biggest benefits of an automatic transmission is for driving in heavy traffic. But based on these comments it appears that slow stop-and-go traffic is the DSG weakest aspect. Obviously it is easier to not have to hassle with a clutch pedal while sitting in heavy traffic, but it seems the tradeoff for that benefit is clunky motion. Am I interpreting that correctly?

Bottom line:

One you start driving this car you learn to adapt to the transmission. At this point I rarely expereince the choppy effects I felt earlier. It took a bit of time but I worked it out.

I'll try to get some more pics this weekend, I'm going to slap my old wheels on it, some 20" Iforged... [evilsmile]

Thanks. This is the best explanation I've read. You are absolutely right. I've now also learned to adapt to this. Less of a problem once you get a feel for how to modulate the pedals according to traffic conditions. I find driving in Dynamic helps a bit as it holds the gears longer.

the red/blue scheme is cool if you were going for a Superman scheme. I guess the red bits on the outside (tails, badges) pull it together. Not saying it looks bad--love the car. Very beautiful car - mine is also of the same colour, but without red leather inserts in the seats - grey alcantara instead - in winter, cold leather is very discomforting.
Why stock 19" wheels - even stock 18" are darn heavy (more unsprung weight, less comfort, acceleration issues, etc), my 19" OZ Ultraleggera are 10 lbs lighter than even 18" stock, which I left for winter. Yours stock 19" are even more heavier.

I know I'm trying to figure out a winter wheel/tire package myself.

This is true undoubtely. As for me, I was trying to get the lightest wheels, design and cost were secondary. And optional stock wheels 255/35R19 (3 variants offered) instead of base stock 245/40R18, despite being quite beautiful and matching S4's design, are 8mm larger in diameter, which means lost acceleration and incorrect speedometer readings.
Almost everyone experienced sporscar buyer in Russia uses stock wheels for the winter tyres and buys bigger and lighter wheels for the summer. This is prestigious yet not always reasonable - the quality of our roads is far behind from American's.

I have a sprint blue s4 as well, but i have no gus to get your combo, I will go for it If audi can offer solid red, so i choose the panda tone seats inside finally.[:/]

Actually, blue with red interior always happened in Italian's car. [;)]

Nicko, I have the 8mm larger wheels, and although they do hurt acceleration, they are indeed closer to reading correct on the speedo than the 18"ers.

My 255x35-19 although 8mm taller, are still 1% slow on the speedometer. The 18s would be even slower, maybe 2%. Check your digital readout speedometer, vs. a gps when cruising.

My snows are an even match to the gps at even another 8mm taller...so 16 more than the 18"....yours are 16mm to short for accurate spedo. Then again, it is helping the bottom line for gear reduction, and acceleration.

235x45-18s are almost 100% accurate via gps. aka my snows. maybe 1mm too tall. (helps audi leases. at 48k, you really have only travelled 47k kms!)

This thing pulls like a beast. More power than the m3 on the low end.. It almost feels faster than an RS4.

I'll get more when I have time. Enjoy

Yes, LOU, I get your point. I checked the readings of my speedometer with a portable GPS at 240 km/h - 232 it was on the GPS's display - non-stock 245/35R19 summer tyres.
Thus, It's not correct speedometer readings what I was looking for when I bought light aftermarket OZ's instead of ordering stock 19" wheels - it was reduced acceleration times and less unsprung weight for better handling, as well as comfort and less suspension stress.

I've seen one in person today and I must admit that it really looks much better in person than it does on photos. I have a dilemma now of whether to go with a nice 08 CPO RS4 or order one of these bad boys, but considering problems reported by many RS4 owners (carbon buildup and DRC leaks), I'm leaning toward the S4.

how much is a used 08 rs4 your talking about? is it more expensive or less than a new s4?
