So after taking about 20gb worth of pictures, I am completely sold on the Opteka Battery Grip. It was an excellent purchase.
The camera is so much easier to handle with the grip - especially when you have a heavy lens on it (telephoto, etc). Plus the grip give you a second set of shutter/AF selection, etc controls for when you want a vertical picture.
So far I only had one issue. The grip has an on/off switch - when it is off, then you just cant use the buttons on it. When it is on, you can use either the grip buttons or the camera buttons. I had one instance where my camera shutter button was disabled although the grip shutter button worked fine. All I did was turn off the grip and turn it back on and the issue went away.
The fit and finish of the grip are also top notch - it matches the camera perfectly. I will take photos of it with another camera and post them later
just figured id share some info
